A big congratulations to my latest student to pass the CAE.....I knew you would pass with flying colours Mikel!!!
The speaking part of the IELTS will start with general questions on familiar topics such as:
Let’s talk about your home town or village:
what kind of place is it?
what’s the most interesting part of your town/village?
what kind of jobs do the people in your town/village do?
would you say it’s a good place to live? (why?)
Please post your answers if you would like to practice!
Good luck to all of my students who are taking the IELTS tomorrow!

Congratulations to Icaro, my latest student to pass the CAE.
This is a huge achievement and shows that you can:
- follow an academic course at university level
- communicate effectively at a managerial and professional level
- participate with confidence in workplace meetings or academic tutorials and seminars
- express yourself with a high level of fluency.
Well done for working hard and achieving this goal Icaro!

Adjectives ending in ED and ING
Adjectives that end ‘-ed’ (e.g. ‘bored’, ‘interested’) and adjectives that end ‘-ing’ (e.g. ‘boring’, ‘interesting’) are often confused.
Adjectives ending in -ed show what has happened to a person or thing.
Adjectives ending in -ing show the effect which something has on a person or thing.
Example: If you meet someone who makes you laugh then he is amusing. You are always amused when you speak to him.
Compare the difference:
My girlfriend is bored. - (My girlfriend feels bored)
My girlfriend is boring. - (My girlfriend is a boring person)
I am confused. - (I don't understand something)
I am confusing. - (I will cause you to be confused)
For those of you who are going to take the CAE, here are some questions you may be asked in part one of the speaking exam:
Where are you from?
Do you have a job or are you still a student?
How long have you been studying English?
What do you enjoy most about learning English?
How do you like to spend your free time?
What would your ideal job be?
Are you the kind of person who can do two things at once?
Are you planning to do any courses in the near future?
Do you use social networking sites a lot?
Would you enjoy preparing food for a large number of people?
Do you like to give yourself targets or goals?
If you won the lottery what would you do?
Today I want to look at the
Second Conditional!
What fun!
The second conditional uses the past simple after if, then ‘would’ and the infinitive:
• if + past simple, …would + infinitive
(We can use ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ with ‘I’ and ‘he/she/it’. This is mostly done in formal writing).
It has two uses.
First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true. Maybe I’m imagining some dream for example.
• If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won’t win the lottery)
• If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.
• She would travel all over the world if she were rich.
• She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never studies, so this won’t happen)
Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it’s not true. Is that clear? Have a look at the examples:
• If I had his number, I would call him. (I don’t have his number now, so it’s impossible for me to call him).
• If I were you, I wouldn’t go out with that man.
How is this different from the first conditional?
This kind of conditional sentence is different from the first conditional because this is a lot more unlikely.
For example (second conditional): If I had enough money I would buy a house with twenty bedrooms and a swimming pool (I’m probably not going to have this much money, it’s just a dream, not very real)
But (first conditional): If I have enough money, I’ll buy some new shoes (It’s much more likely that I’ll have enough money to buy some shoes)
So…. a question for you…
If you were the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, what laws would you make? And why?
There will be a prize for the best answer!
Please make sure you answer using the second conditional!
