🚨 How to Spot & Fix Common GCSE Maths Mistakes – Avoid Losing Easy Marks! ✏️✅
We’ve all been there – you’ve worked through a Maths problem, feeling confident, only to realise you’ve made a small mistake that cost you valuable marks! 😩 But don’t worry – these mistakes are easy to fix once you know what to look for.
Here are some of the most common GCSE Maths mistakes and how to avoid them:
🔴 1. Misreading the Question
👉 Fix it: Take a few extra seconds to underline key information, especially words like “estimate,” “round to 2 decimal places,” or “show your working.” This stops you from making unnecessary mistakes.
🔴 2. Calculator Errors
👉 Fix it: Always double-check your calculator inputs! A misplaced bracket or typing error can completely change your answer. Use the “ANS” button to avoid retyping long calculations.
🔴 3. Forgetting Units in Your Answer
👉 Fix it: Whether it’s cm, m², or £, missing units can lose you marks. Check the question for the correct unit before writing your final answer.
🔴 4. Rounding Too Early in a Calculation
👉 Fix it: Keep all numbers in your calculator and only round at the final step. Rounding too soon can lead to incorrect answers, especially in trigonometry and probability questions.
🔴 5. Not Showing Your Working
👉 Fix it: Even if you get the wrong answer, showing your method can still earn you marks! Always write down your steps clearly so the examiner can follow your reasoning.
🔴 6. Confusing Negative Signs
👉 Fix it: Watch out for double negatives, subtraction mistakes, and negative answers when solving equations. Re-read your solution before moving on!
🎯 Final Tip: Always check your answers if you have time at the end of the exam! Even a quick scan can help you catch simple errors and gain back easy marks.

🌟Another satisfied customer !!! 🌟
Here is a full review by one GCSE parent:
'We are very fortunate having Zorica as the maths tutor for our daughter.
Zorica is very professional and experienced in her work.
My daughter says that Zorica understands very quickly where the knowledge gaps are and where to focus first. Due to her rich experience working with children, Zorica can adjust her methodology to achieve the best results
explaining complex subjects in simple and comprehensive ways.
I can see that my daughter's confidence is increased, she is more willing to do maths now and she found the GCSE's mock exam not very difficult.
Zorica is also very punctual in the lessons. The reason I am referring that is because we had issues with other tutors where lots of lessons were missed and often rescheduled due to them prioritising their work in a not very effective way. We have never experienced that with Zorica. In opposite, she is always flexible, helpful willing to adjust her own programme when we need to reschedule some lessons.
I highly recommend Zorica as a maths tutor and I hope she will be available to continue working with my daughter helping her achieving her goals.'

📈 Moving Up from a Grade 7 in GCSE Maths? Here’s How!
If you’re aiming to push beyond a Grade 7, here are some pointers:
1️⃣ Master Exam Technique:
Practice showing every step of your working clearly.
Focus on time management—don’t spend too long on one question!
2️⃣ Tackle Higher-Level Questions:
Dive into past papers and target the trickiest topics like functions, algebraic proof, and circle theorems.
Look at questions worth 4–6 marks—they often make the difference at the top grades.
3️⃣ Deepen Your Understanding:
Don’t just know how to solve a problem—ask yourself why the method works.
Connect different topics (e.g., how algebra links to geometry). Can you get to the same answer in a different way?
4️⃣ Refine Your Weak Spots:
Identify the topics you struggle with and make them your priority.
Use online tutorials, textbooks, or ask your teacher for support.
5️⃣ Be Precise:
Double-check your answers for accuracy, especially in calculation-heavy questions.
Learn to avoid common mistakes like misreading the question or skipping steps.
6️⃣ Stretch Yourself:
Challenge yourself with additional resources like extension questions or advanced problems.
Try A-level style questions to strengthen your skills.
🌟 Top Tip: Aiming for an 8 or 9 isn’t just about working harder—it’s about working smarter. Focus on clarity, precision, and a strong exam technique, and you’ll see the results!

4️⃣ Master the Basics: Strong foundations = easier problem-solving!
5️⃣ Active Revision: Use flashcards, explain concepts to others, and mix up your methods.
6️⃣ Learn from Mistakes: Keep a “mistakes journal” and revisit tricky questions.
7️⃣ Use Tech: Interactive apps, videos, and quizzes can bring tricky topics to life!
8️⃣ Focus on High-Value Topics: Prioritize areas like algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
9️⃣ Mental Maths Matters: Practice daily to ace non-calculator questions.
🔟 Take Care of Yourself: Sleep well, stay hydrated, and take regular breaks!
