National 5 Maths, Paper 1, Q 14 (2022)

A quadratics question! Quadratics and parabolas always look tricky but they follow a set pattern. This question asked us to sketch the graph finding the roots, turning point and y-intercept.

The question gave us the factorised version of the quadratic (hint: it’s already in brackets) which meant that we could instantly find the roots by taking the two values out of the brackets. From there, we want to multiply out our brackets to put it into the trinomial format. This then allows us to complete the square (working in black) to get our turning point. Finally, making all of the x’s zero allows us to get our y-intercept - or you could look at the final number in the trinomial!

To get full marks, you would then need to correctly label the graph (coordinates included!!).
