The shape, position, and size of the mouth are fundamental factors that influence the beauty and harmony of the face. The appearance, orientation, and position of the commissure (corner) of the lips, as well as its relation to the rest of the anatomic structures of the face may denote youth, aging, or sadness.
Clients frequently complain that their downturned oral commissures make them look sad and tired. I like to think of this structure as the frame to the portrait. The lips themselves are the portrait, and the surrounding tissue and structures are the frame.
Another approach is to use antiwrinkle treatments in the muscle called the depressor anguli oris or DAO for short.
This prevents the corners of the mouth from being pulled down due to repetitive muscle movements and allows the antagonist muscle, the levator anguli oris to pull upward with less resistance.
