art-K Good News here, bringing you your Friday briefing 📰 Over the Winter break, one of our students ventured out to Vienna, to see Hundertwasser's home with their very own eyes 👀

Who is Hundertwasser?🧑‍🎨

His paintings are an art-K favourite! Hundertwasser is an artist known for his bold use of colour and shapes, a great introduction to painting with acrylics on canvas.

We are delighted to see such a passion for art beyond the studio!🏆

Here are some facts about this glorious building and the inspiring man behind it:
🟢 The building is called the Hundertwasserhaus
🟥 It was completed in 1985
🟡 Hundertwasser himself started out as an artist before becoming an architect

⚠️Warning!⚠️We have heard reports of a *very real and scary* tiger roaming free around Wimbledon after its escape from our studio!🐅

Did you know?🤔 Tigers can jump up to 30 feet!

David Attenborough would tell you that tigers are one of the most powerful animals on the planet. We don't think he's seen this tiger yet!

The pursuit of a career in the arts requires the courage to leap outside of your comfort zone and trust your instincts. The creative industry has been stereotyped by setbacks, overshadowed by high-paying jobs in a competitive world where salaries are prioritised over job satisfaction. It takes a lot of strength to pursue the dream of being an artist.

But art history will tell you that many famous artists weren't afraid to take the leap and bite back! 🧑‍🎨

February Half-Term Workshops are open for booking! 👀 Here's an insight into a morning at the studio on a typical workshop week...

👋 Children get settled in their space amongst a table of like-minded children.

✍️ Everyone begins with a drawing to get the creativity flowing before we gather at the project table.

💡Once they've selected the piece that inspires them, children are supported by skilled teachers to add their own stamp to the chosen project.

👩‍🎨 We encourage everyone to work at their own pace, with plenty of step-by-step guidance.

🖼️ Time to dry the paint and showcase the finished pieces at pick up. The best bit? The mess is made at the studio, not at home.

All in a day's work! ✅

Today is National Compliment Day, a great day to discuss the importance of rewarding each milestone, not just the final outcome.
After all, there is little reward in the celebration of a final piece when we fail to acknowledge and celebrate the steps taken to create it.

At the end of class, we invite a round of applause for the finished artwork. When we applaud, we recognise all the mistakes that need troubleshooting along the way.👏

We know that finishing touches can't happen without the layers that sit beneath. Not least the one you rubbed out 3 times!

The number 7 is considered lucky in many cultures. Interestingly, 7 also holds significance in terms of memory... On average, we can retain 7 things in our short-term memory before we begin to forget. 🧠

We want to share why 7 is significant at art-K too: Small classes have BIG benefits!

Our experienced teachers have a wealth of knowledge, trained to teach our projects to a high standard. However, when challenged to share this detailed level of knowledge in a larger class, the math is simple:

👩‍🏫 more people = less support per person, and therefore less impact.

Small classes with more teachers mean more support, and even more opportunities to ask questions in order to learn!

Our very own Mauricio, of art-K Wimbledon Chase, shared that he has been set on a career as an artist since the age of 9!

As a child, he wrote a note about his aspirations. He kept it as a memento, a manifestation of things to come...
✨It translates as: "I want to be an artist because I love art."✨

An inspiration for his students, and all of our art-K artists who aspire to be professionals one day!

When asked what he would tell his younger self, he shared:

It's National Ditch Your New Year's Resolution Day...📆 What can we learn from this (unofficial) holiday?

It encourages us to let go of any unrealistic goals we may have set for ourselves at the beginning of the year!

When asked art-K students to set a goal for 2025, we were impressed by the number of people who aim to draw and paint realistically.
However, that isn't something that anyone can achieve overnight!🪄

✨Each lesson is a step towards their goal, as art-K students develop skills week-by-week
✨Each term is a leap closer to a deeper understanding of different techniques and processes!

Take this wonderful David Hockney-inspired painting as an example, created by one of our talented 11+ students. She is working at her own pace, week-by-week, to develop her painting skills.

When our children's classes wind down for an evening, art-K studios become home to our adult students. A space where friendships blossom and mindful moments are cherished...

💜 Commuting from different professions and busy family lives, adult students meet weekly to take time for themselves ✨together✨

We see many lasting and beautiful friendships develop in our classes. Real, human connections are made among people who arrive looking for some "me time".

Many felt that to belong is "to feel at home"! 🏠

📚Ray Oldenburg wrote a book called The Great Good Place...

He defines "great good places" as "homes away from home", happy places where people gather and form communities of like-minded people.

We strive to create spaces where creative people belong. WHY? Because we want our studios to be a place where people feel safe to be themselves - a home away from home, where everyone can feel accepted!
