Sight reading: Skill Up...and Bring It On! 🎶

"Naomi Yandell and I are string teachers based in Cambridge, UK. We have worked together on many projects including a number of publications for young beginner string players, and we also teach together at Stringmoves, a Saturday scheme for primary-age children.

We are both big believers in including sight reading practice as part of our students’ weekly lessons and, believe it or not, they all enjoy it.

The secret is to go in easy – start with something so super-simple that the student is guaranteed to succeed. Even just reading and tapping a rhythm on the instrument is enough at the beginning. Then, as confidence builds, the level of difficulty can slowly and incrementally increase until, almost without noticing what is happening, the student realises that they are good at sight reading."

-Celia Cobb, co-author of the Trinity sight reading strings series

We love the arts. Do you? 💜

With Valentine's Day approaching, we've been reflecting on where our love for music and drama began.

For JJ, Business Development Manager at Trinity College London, he can't remember a time he wasn't passionate about music. From a young age, he learned to play the drums, and music has since taken him around the world and helped him to build a career.

We'd love to know: when did your love for music or drama begin? Has it always been there?

Where did your love for the arts begin? 💜

With Valentine's Day approaching, we've been reflecting on just this.
For Sarah, Arts Award and Drama Subject Specialist at Trinity College London, she was mesmerised by the art of storytelling from a young age. In primary school, she saw a play adaptation of a book she knew and her passion grew from there. Sarah knew she had found something she loved!

We'd love to know: when did your love for music or drama begin? Has it always been there?

Our Business Development Manager, JJ Wheeler, had a fantastic day yesterday as part of the adjudication panel for the Inspiration Trust Battle of the Bands in Norwich! 🏆

Bands from across the Norfolk and surrounding regions came to compete for the hotly contested Band of the Year trophy, this year won by Avarice.

The event, organised by Trinity local area representative, John Stephens, was a great success and we would like to congratulate all young performers who took part. 🎸

We had an exciting day with Royal Ballet And Opera Schools training education practitioners on the new Create & Sing resources for sensory learners.

We spent the session exploring The Magic Flute. The has been deconstructed to allow students with profound and multiple to engage in a multi-sensory way.

The work has been underpinned by the Sounds of Intent framework. The resources also allow students to enter the Trinity College London Music and Drama Awards and Certificates in Musical Development.

The Listening task is designed to help candidates develop their listening and responding skills in screen acting.

It encourages them to focus on reacting to the emotional context of the scene rather than relying on delivering lines. This task provides an opportunity for students to explore their character in more depth, particularly in terms of physicality and subtle emotional shifts.

When selecting material, ensure the scene comes from an existing film or television programme, rather than a stage play.

It's important that the scene involves minimal movement, as the task is filmed in close-up and requires a level of stillness from the candidate. There should be little or no dialogue for them, with off-screen dialogue from other characters creating moments of emotional change and response.

Did you know? We have an entire library of video guidance around Trinity Acting for Screen tasks on our website. These demonstrate the purpose of each task, and also how to correctly film for your submission - everything you need to set your students up for success!

Did you hear us on the Percussion Discussion podcast? 👂🎶

Toby Davies, Trinity's Head of Business Development for Performing Arts in the UK & Ireland, and JJ Wheeler, UK & Ireland Business Development Manager featured in episode 151. Both have backgrounds within performing and teaching.

The episode focuses on drum education and assessment and covers topics such as mastering filming set-up for a digital Rock & Pop Drums exam, and how our digital exams compare to a traditional face-to-face exam.

Toby and JJ also discuss how candidate's often strive for perfection in recording their performance and share some great advice; it is better to be authentic and give a real performance, as no musician ever feels they were 'perfect' and the examiner is not expecting it.

Listen (or watch) on YouTube: https://hubs.la/Q034sQJt0

The podcast is also available as an audio-only on providers such as Spotify and Apple podcasts. Just search for 'Percussion Discussion' to find it!

Trinity music: graded exams.

Our graded exams allow learners to perform to their strengths through a flexible exam structure that enables them to gain recognition for their own unique skills as performers.

Every year we support the music education of thousands of students with assessments across a wide spectrum including popular, jazz, contemporary and classical music.

Our graded exams and diplomas span performing, teaching, theory of music and composing, and are all fully regulated by the relevant UK bodies.

Many of our examiners are professional musicians, with a significant number actively engaged as practicing teachers and they take special care to make candidates feel relaxed in the examination room, creating a positive environment for them to demonstrate their talents to their full potential.
