I've been a teacher for 28 years and would like to know what 'ethical tutoring' is.
Thank you
Do you have the timetable of topics that will be covered each week?
Studyseed is a social enterprise dedicated to children's education in Northern Ireland. Our ex This means a few things. Finally, we are not a charity.
Studyseed was established in 2013 as a private tuition agency in Northern Ireland. In 2017, we became incorporated as a community interest company, becoming Studyseed CIC (more on that below!).
Over the past seven years, we have worked with a lot of amazing children across Northern Ireland and we have forged strong relationships with schools, organisations and policy-makers in our mission to ma
ke educational support accessible to everyone who needs it. After four years of operating in the private tuition industry, we had grown increasingly uncomfortable with the disparity that exists between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds in their access to educational support. One in five children in Northern Ireland lives in poverty, and less than 50% of children entitled to free school meals leave school with at least five good GCSE grades. We realised that operating as a private business did not align with our social values or research backgrounds and so, in 2017, we became a social enterprise. Firstly, our profits must be used for the benefit of society. We use our profits to provide free tuition and workshops for disadvantaged children through schools and youth organisations. We also use our profits to heavily subsidise our services for organisations that provide free support to children living in neighbourhood renewal areas. Secondly, as a social enterprise, our assets are locked. This means that we cannot use our profits for private gain. Our profits are used to help society and so, in our eyes, they rightly belong to society. A social enterprise generates money to invest into society by acting as a business and must generate at least 50% of its profits in this way. By choosing a tutor through Studyseed, you aren't just getting great support for your child - you're also supporting the educations of other children across Northern Ireland. So, thank you for joining us on our social mission - that makes you pretty great. We work with experienced tutors across Northern Ireland who provide educational support for children at all stages through Primary, Year 8-10, GCSE and A-Level in a variety of subject and support areas. Our tutors are a great and varied group of people: we have support workers, scientists, public and private school teachers, researchers and retired teachers - to name a few. What they all have in common, though, is their passion for education, their commitment to inspire students and their shared belief in our social aims. As a social enterprise we are happily obligated to act with transparency. The private tuition industry is, unfortunately, still unregulated and we believe that it is important to have scrutiny and accountability when providing educational support. We must submit annual reports on our social impact and, by working with education bodies, our tutors are CRB-checked, obliged to abide by our safeguarding policy and are closely monitored. Some of our tutors provide online and home support and some also run our after-school classes at our centre in Craigavon. What's important to us is that we spend time working in person with each tutor so that we can really get to know each of them. That way, we are able to match tutors to students much more effectively by directly connecting tutor strengths to student needs. During the COVID-19 lockdown, many of our tutors volunteered to provide free support to disadvantaged children - they're great people and they continue to inspire us and their students. Studyseed was set up by two 23-year-old postgraduate students from Craigavon who had £50 of start-up funding, big dreams - and an even bigger draught coming through the cracked window of the 1996 Citroen AX they were sitting in when the business plan came up. The odds are stacked against female entrepreneurs of all ages, but particularly those between the ages of 25-34. We're still here and, with every year that passes, our social impact continues to grow. Our team has also grown over the past seven years, but we are proud to still be a women-led company in Northern Ireland. Our management team does not only represent women, but also advocates for disability and BAME representation in business leadership. And until the day comes when we don't have to speak just a little bit louder to have our voices heard in boardrooms, we think that's important to mention. Our research backgrounds range from psychology and special educational needs to children's rights and community cohesion through education in Northern Ireland. We believe that good research, coupled with positive social changes at a grassroots level, can make an overwhelming impact on transforming society. In an era of fake news and unreliable information, we think that it is more important than ever to provide robust information that comes from fact-checked and peer-reviewed sources. We also believe that our platform should be used to amplify the voices of the children and families that we work with.

One of our favourite events of the year is when we head over to Queen's University to deliver a full day of maths workshops for the fantastic Widening Participation Unit. Students from schools across Northern Ireland come to QUB for a day to work through different GCSE mathematics topics in preparation for their upcoming exams.
It's always a lot of fun and hugely inspiring to see the coordination that the WPU team do to bring it all together! Thanks to WPU Queen's for having us again this year - it's really lovely to be back in person for this great event.

AQE and GL exams begin in 13 weeks! If you would like to arrange 1-1 tuition to prepare and build confidence in the final run-up to the exams, please enquire early as demand is extremely high from September onwards.
Julie received this absolutely delightful feedback from a client for her KS3 maths tuition:
"What can I say but FANTASTIC! Julie has such a great way with her - really understood what my daughter needed and was able to help boost her self confidence in a subject that my daughter dreaded from primary school experience. Last exam score was 88% - simply a brilliant asset to Studyseed!"

We normally have a 1-2 month waiting list during term time for home visits due to high demand and are currently mapping out our areas for the Autumn term. Priority will be given to current clients, students who have anxiety with online tuition and AQE/GL students who require in-person support.
A. Although the majority of our clients have a tutor booked weekly on an ongoing basis or during the months leading up to an exam, we often have requests for one-off tuition sessions. This could be to go over topics that a child has missed due to a school absence, or to do some preparation ahead of a test.
One-off lessons are subject to tutor availability but normally we can accommodate such bookings within 1-2 weeks of request. The simplest way to check availability is to use our client portal to check to see if any suitable tutors for the subject/year have listed their current availability on the direct booking page. If so, you can directly book in with them for an online lesson.
For home visits or if you cannot see a suitable time on the booking page (not all of our our tutors are listed on this), pop us a message on Whatsapp or send us an email and we'll endeavour to arrange a lesson time that works for you.
We are running a selection of online seminars at the end of August to help students get prepared for the return to school and the new school year. These 2-hour interactive seminars are £30 each, with a 10% discount when booking in for two seminars and 15% off for three or more.
