Dr Agnieszka Lewko, one of our researchers, is playing a part in the humanitarian effort in Ukraine by training healthcare workers and rehabilitation specialists as they care for those injured and impacted by the war with Russia.

From the very moment the invasion began, Agnieszka wanted to do something to help and in less than a month she reached out and collaborated with other experts to host an online course in first aid for those on the ground in Ukraine.

The course was arranged through a collaboration with the Ukrainian Physical Therapists Association and Ukrainian Society of Ergotherapists and was soon followed by live webinars in amputee management and rehabilitation.

Dr Agnieszka Lewko PhD said: “The unexpected outbreak of the invasion on Ukraine created a feeling of disbelief and shock to see pictures of civilian casualties.

"The last two years have showed that we are stronger together; leaders in education, clinical practice and research supporting our Ukrainian rehabilitation colleagues to improve patients’ care in this horrendous situation.

"We learned a lot from each other through this journey and continue working together to improve patients' care and access to high-quality rehabilitation globally."

Anastasiia Boichuk, who leads CF Patients of Ukraine’s War Trauma Rehabilitation in Ukraine initiative said: “We're extremely grateful for the support from Agnieszka and Coventry University.

"With this help we should be able to expand our network of rehabilitation service providers, develop our workforce and help to improve and develop the existing rehabilitation professionals.”

Recognised as one of the most influential living Arab artists and a pioneer of modern Arab art, Dia al-Azzawi is an internationally recognised Iraqi painter and sculptor best known for his monumental and colourful canvasses. We are incredibly proud to award Dia al-Azzawi with an Honorary Doctorate of Arts today in recognition of his work.

Born in Baghdad in 1939, Azzawi came of age during the liberation of Middle Eastern states following the end of World War Two. His career began as an archaeologist and curator, fields that strongly influenced his artistic practice.

Dia al-Azzawi's work has been shown in countless exhibitions worldwide, as well as his work being featured in several public and private collections around the world. In 2021, Tamayouz Excellence Award launched a prize named the Dia al-Azzawi Prize for Public Art in the Arab World and in May 2023, Dia received the Nile Award as he was crowned the Most Creative Arab Personality.

Best known as a colourist painter, Dia’s work can be distinguished by its impressive scale and the amalgamation of images and the written word. His art celebrates Arab culture and he is renowned for pushing boundaries between art forms while embracing new and exciting technologies.

Here is what he had to say about his experience today:

From winning awards to inspiring the next generation of successful creatives, we have always had a passion for promoting the Arts and it’s an important part of our history. Therefore, we are delighted to award Jude Rogers, who has had a significant impact on journalism, an Honorary Doctorate of Arts.

As a nationally acclaimed journalist, arts critic and broadcaster, Jude has lectured at many UK universities, including as a guest lecturer here at Coventry University. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Guardian, The Observer, The New Statesman and more.

With her keen musical ear, Jude has also been a judge for prestigious music prizes including the Mercury Prize, and has lent her broadcasting talent to Radio 4, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music.

Her connections with the creative industries, particularly those working with Delia Derbyshire’s legacy, represent a bond between Jude, Coventry and our very own Coventry University College of Arts and Society.

Here is what she said today:

We're thrilled to announce that next week we'll be awarding Paralympic gold medallist and Coventry University graduate James Roberts MBE an Honorary Doctorate.

James, who was awarded an MBE in 2022 for Services to Wheelchair Rugby, competed as part of the ParalympicsGB Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby which won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

James’ life changed forever after his first year at university in 2007 when he returned home to work with the family business over the summer.

After contracting bacterial meningitis, James was forced to undergo a life-changing double amputation, spending around two-and-a-half years in hospital.

Determined to continue his studies when he recovered, James returned to Coventry University to complete his degree in Architectural Design Technology, earning first-class honours and outstanding student of the year from the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologies.

A keen rugby player before his amputations, James never lost his passion for sport.

Taking inspiration from Team GB at the 2012 Paralympic Games and supported by Coventry University’s Sports Scholarship Programme, he worked extremely hard to get into the Team GB wheelchair Rugby Development Squad.

James said: "I’m absolutely shocked to be given an Honorary Doctorate but it’s a huge honour and it means so much coming from Coventry University which I’ve got such a connection to.

"I was determined to come back to Coventry when I’d recovered. I’ve always thought this was such a brilliant place, arriving from the Welsh borders it was such a change of pace coming here and everybody was so helpful and encouraging when I was ill and when I returned to study."

Coventry University awarded £13million government grant to help fund switch to net zero campus 10/07/2024

One of our highlights of the year so far was being able to share the news that we had been awarded a grant of almost £13million to help us hit our target of being net zero by 2030.

The grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, will help towards installing 1,300 new solar panels and connecting nine Coventry University buildings to the city's district energy network.

It is hoped this will reduce the Group’s carbon emissions by more than 1,300 tonnes per year – more than a fifth of its annual carbon emissions arising from the use of fossil fuels.

Professor John Latham CBE, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said: “For many years Coventry University has been taking positive strides towards our target of net zero and this grant from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will help us with the next steps along that road.

“Sustainable development and social responsibility are central to what we stand for and we are working to speed up society’s journey to net zero and clean growth through our excellent research and education.

"While we are rightly proud of the work and research we do to help tackle those issues nationally and internationally, being able to make a difference on our own campus is just as important.”

We are delighted to announce that campaigner Sir Alan Bates is to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Coventry University in recognition of his quest for justice.

Sir Alan, who received a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours list, has been the driving force behind hundreds of former postmasters and mistresses fighting to clear their names after being wrongfully convicted in the Post Office scandal.

He founded the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance (JFSA) and in 2017 more than 500 subpostmasters led by Sir Alan brought a group action in the High Court to expose the truth behind what was wrong with the Post Office’s Horizon system and it was this that led to the criminal convictions being overturned. The Alliance’s efforts rose to prominence when the 2024 television series Mr Bates vs The Post Office shone a spotlight on one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British history.

Sir Alan, 69, will join the crowds of students for a ceremony at Coventry Cathedral when he will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws for his outstanding resilience and commitment to pursuing justice.

One of our graduates has seen her dreams come true as she prepares to represent Team GB at this summer’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games!

Emma Reid took home the bronze medal at the recent World Judo Championships 2024, qualifying her for the Olympics in Paris this summer!

When Emma was at the start of her sporting journey, she enrolled on our Event Management course and was also accepted on the sports scholarship scheme which offers money and support towards people’s sporting goals.

Emma said: “It’s my first Olympics so it feels amazing. It’s what you work towards and finally after years you reach the pinnacle of your career and your dreams. If I told myself that 10 years ago I’d be like ‘you’re crazy!’.”

Tom Shakespeare, our sports scholarship performance manager, said: “To see Emma achieve this dream of qualifying for the Olympics is just amazing and to confirm her place with a bronze medal at the World Championships is an incredible achievement in itself.

We're inspired by Thomas Hames, Course Director for Sport and Exercise Therapy, and his brother in law, Luke Hames-Brown, who have completed a gruelling charity challenge in support of Luke who has Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Luke, 35, who married Thomas’ sister Kate in 2022, was diagnosed with MND in April last year, having developed weakness in his leg the previous year.

Despite the diagnosis, Luke, who has a background as a doctor and a volunteer for Search and Rescue, is hoping to inspire others struggling with difficult moments to build new memories even in the face of adversity.

Thomas accompanied Luke and other relatives on an 84-mile, eight-day trek along the length of Hadrian’s Wall this month. So far nearly £45,000 has been raised for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the MND Association.

Thomas said: "I think what Luke is doing is incredible - the positivity that he’s found deep inside himself to do this is amazing. He’s never wanted to stop just because he’s got Motor Neurone Disease.

"Both him and my sister Kate are strong people, they’ve always been determined to help others.

"Eight of us including me, Kate, our parents and Luke’s parents did the walk and a number of others joined us to do different parts of the route. It has been a challenge, both physically but also mentally, due to the emotive purpose of the fundraising.

"Part of this challenge is about inspiring others to make memories when they experience things like this and we’ve made some great memories with Luke on this trip."

New figures reveal international students are worth £651 million to the city of Coventry 25/06/2024

New figures show that international students are worth £651 million to the city of Coventry.

The data is available for the first time for each parliamentary constituency and shows the net totals for Coventry South, Coventry East and Coventry North West.

Coventry South saw the sixth largest gross benefit in the UK from international students at £480m. Once the cost to public services of £44m is taken into account, that left a net impact of £436m.

In Coventry East the gross benefit of £129m and public services cost of £12m created a net impact of £117m, while Coventry North West’s impact was calculated at £98m from benefits of £108m, minus costs of £10m.

Thousands of international students from 160 nations currently study at Coventry University’s city centre campus every year, while neighbouring the University of Warwick also welcomes learners from overseas.

The benefits of international students for the top 20 constituencies combined – 17 from England, one from Scotland, one from Wales and one from Northern Ireland – totalled at £8.3 billion.

Professor John Latham CBE, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said: "We have always known and nurtured the incredibly positive impact that international students have on our city and these figures show that welcoming students from overseas has an invaluable impact on everyone who calls Coventry their home."

Coventry-born sonic pioneer Delia Derbyshire is being celebrated with a new soundscape created by local school children for this year’s Gallery of Living History Schools Competition, championed by award-winning actor and director Andy Serkis.

The winning entry from The Blue Coat School will be installed in the heart of Coventry in the base of the Tree of Hands statue in Starley Gardens, opposite Coventry University’s newly-opened Delia Derbyshire building.

Another champion of the Gallery of Living History, Coventry University Chancellor Margaret Casely Hayford CBE, said: "I’m really impressed with the entries to this year’s competition and am delighted that the children's entries wanted particularly to celebrate women. The Delia Derbyshire soundscape is a very fitting overall winner, helping to highlight her childhood, education, her career with the BBC and her post-BBC work."

Andy Serkis commented as well, saying: "The creative way in which children have approached this competition, thinking deeply about their subjects and why they should be celebrated, is amazing. I’m also pleased that so many people engaged with the public vote and that we now have an incredible soundscape to display paying tribute to a wonderful sonic pioneer in Delia Derbyshire."
