PhD studentship Opportunity
Dear MAIPR alumni, below is the info about two Phd studentships that might be of interest:
Amateur Dramatics: Crafting Communities in Time and Space
Applications are invited for two, three-year, full-time PhD studentships, and a part-time Post Doctoral Research Assistant (0.5), funded by the AHRC as part of a major new Research Project on Amateur theatre.
Amateur theatre has an active place in the social and cultural life of many communities, and a long history of community activity. Yet the term 'amateur' is often used disparagingly; academics have been conspicuously silent on the subject, and professional actors continue to deride amateur dramatics, often vociferously, for their production values. Yet for the participants themselves, the choice of repertoire, the craft of performance and the production values are deeply important. This research project is the first major study to take amateur dramatics seriously.
The researchers will gain skills within and beyond the academy. They will benefit from sharing expertise across universities, collaborating with the voluntary and charitable sectors, sharing research at international conferences and communicating research findings with cultural policy-makers. The project runs from July 2013-December 2016, and is led by Helen Nicholson (RHUL, Principle Investigator), Nadine Holdsworth (Warwick, Co-Investigator) and Jane Milling (Exeter, Co-Investigator).
Post-Doctoral Research Assistant (0.5 pro rata, 24 months) based at the University of Exeter
Working closely with representative bodies, the postdoctoral researcher will support the work of the project in establishing the contemporary national picture of participation in amateur theatre companies across ethnic and social groups. The post-doctoral research assistant will undertake a survey of the current state of amateur theatre companies in England; collect oral histories with amateur actors; analyse the amateur repertoire and engage with leading amateur dramatic organisations.
The PDRA will be supervised by Dr Jane Milling. To apply for this PDRA contact Jane Milling on [email protected]
The PhD studentships run for three years from September 2013. The two studentships are as follows:
Amateur Dramatics in Urban Utopia (Royal Holloway)
The context for this research project is the Garden Cities Movement, which was founded on radical environmental principles. In the first garden city, Letchworth, this vision of utopia was expressed in amateur dramatics: women in the corset factory staged suffragette plays, drama groups performed Shaw’s censored plays, and there is an Edward Gordon Craig Theatre. But what has happened to amateur dramatics in the twenty-first century?
The PhD student will be based at Royal Holloway, University of London, supervised by Professor Helen Nicholson (Drama and Theatre) and advised by Professor David Gilbert (Cultural Geography). To apply for this PhD Studentship please visit: www.rhul.ac.uk/dramaandtheatre/news/newsarticles/phdstudentshipopportunity.aspx
Entertainment at Sea: From Concert Parties to the SODS Opera (University of Warwick)
The research will question why and to what ends amateur entertainment has endured at sea. Through archival research and interviews, the PhD student will investigate the origins and development of the SODS Opera from its beginnings as a spontaneous, alcohol- fuelled sing along to its current status as an organized variety-style production involving all ranks in the Royal Navy.
The research will be supervised by Professor Nadine Holdsworth (Theatre and Performance Studies) and advised by Dr David Lambert (History and Comparative American Studies). To apply for this PhD Studentship please visit: http://warwick.ac.uk/entertainment_at_sea
Closing date for all applications is 15th March 2013. Interviews will take place in London on 28th March 2013. For more information about the project, please contact Helen Nicholson ([email protected])

Applications are invited for a three-year full-time PhD studentship, funded by the AHRC, to be based in the Department of Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London. The student will be an important part of the research team, with a parallel PhD studentship at the University of Warwic...
