NEW PERSPECTIVES ON DANTE'S DREAM WRITING

Aistė Kiltinavičiūtė (Cork) in conversation with Gennaro Ambrosino and Enrica Leydi (Warwick)

Research Seminar

15 May 2024, 4.30-6 pm

FAB 3.32 (Faculty of Arts Building, Warwick main campus) and online via Teams (please PM to request link)

In this talk, I will interrogate what, according to Dante, it means for something to be dream-like. There are plenty of elements in Dante's waking world that, according to Dante, Dante’s commentators, or manuscript illuminators, resemble dreams, or are inspired by preexisting dream narratives. The penitence of the prideful carrying heavy rocks is compared to the experience of feeling oppressed by an incubus (Purg. 11.25-27), the Old Man of Crete from the biblical dream in the Book of Daniel materialises as part of the infernal landscape (Inf. 14.94-120), and the fainting of Dante between Inferno 3 and Inferno 4, resembling a sudden onset of ‘sonno’ (Inf. 3.136), is frequently depicted with the iconography of sleeping. The wide range of phenomena that, one way or another, could be associated with dreaming bears witness to Dante’s recognition of the underlying similarities in the functioning of faculties such as imagination and fantasy in a range of mental and physical states. I propose that for Dante, dreaming, visionary revelation, and other kinds of miraculous manifestation, while ontologically distinct, exist on what I call the visionary continuum (or spectrum) of experience, ranging from complete mental and bodily awareness to the loss of consciousness and somatic control. This notion helps to account for the pervasive presence in Dante’s work of reveries, phantasms, experiences comparable to lucid dreaming, and other forms of visionary-adjacent perception – a range of phenomena that are distinct, yet united in their emphasis on a phenomenological, subjective account of experience where ‘the worlds of physical reality, dream, and imagination meet, intersect, and nurture each other’ (Dino Cervigni, Dante’s Poetry of Dreams 60).
