Today is Nikolaustag in Germany and other German speaking countries. This is a day when St. Nikolaus comes to visit children and rewards them for their good behaviour with chocolates and other treats.

Great, you think?! Well, where I come from (Southern part of Germany) he is also accompanied by his helper the "Krampus". The story is that if you haven't been good, this scary creature may just put you in a bag and take you away. What an incentive to be "ein braves Kind."

(My dad told me that he always had scissors with him on that day, just in case he was put in the bag 😉)

Can you spot me staring Sankt Nikolaus down in the picture?

Frohe Weihnachten!

Dezember.

Kannst du mir sagen, welche bayerische Spezialität ich da an meinem Weihnachtsbaum habe?
Schreib mir in die Kommentare 😘

Merry Christmas!

This year I'm spending Christmas in England, but we already opened our presents yesterday.

In Germany we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, so we open all presents on the 24th of December.

Can you tell me which Bavarian speciality I've got there on my Christmas tree? Write it in the comments 😘

What are we baking today? Take a guess!

Today should have been the first day of the Oktoberfest but sadly it got cancelled this year.

The Oktoberfest (also called Wiesn) is the most famous fair in the world and has been going since 1810!

A lot of people wear their "Tracht" (traditional clothing) to the Oktoberfest. Women wear a "Dirndl" (like the one in the video) and men wear a "Lederhose" (leather trousers).

The Oktoberfest doesn't actually take place in Oktober, but in September. Do you know why it's called Oktoberfest? Leave a comment!

How my mum judges the singing children at the talent show at the campsite...

To be honest: she's right!

What a way to come back:

Etwas, worüber alle deutschen Kinder schon einmal gekichert haben.

Wir sind in Italien und in Italien nennt man (Mies)muscheln "cozze"... So weit, so gut! Kein Problem!

Something about which every German child has had a giggle.

We are in Italy and in Italy mussels are called "cozze"... So far, so good! No problem!

BUT: You pronounce "cozze" exactly as you would pronounce the German word "Kotze", which means "vomit" in English.

Disgusting or funny?

I still love mussels and maybe I will order "Spaghetti con cozze" tonight. 😂

Today I snuggled with my brother's girlfriend's snake.

Both 'von' (of) + dative
and the "true" genitive are used in German to express possession.

It's very common to say 'the girlfriend OF my brother' and this can be a bit of an issue for English native speakers, as it doesn't seem very natural.

You can also use the true genitive but it's more common in written than in spoken German and might sound odd at times.

As always, there are also regional preferences... Germans, innit?!

My brother's (masc) -
von meinem Bruder OR meines Bruders

My sister's (fem)-
von meiner Schwester OR meiner Schwester

My rabbit's (neuter)-
von meinem Kaninchen OR meines Kaninchens

My parents' (plural)-
von meinen Eltern OR meiner Eltern

I bin in d' Schwammerl ganga 😂🤣.
Viel Spaß beim Übersetzen!

Yesterday and the day before yesterday I went hiking, but I wasn't very fast...

The reason:

I picked mushrooms!

Or as we say in Bavarian:
I bin in d' Schwammerl ganga. 😂🤣
Have fun translating that one!

Grammar:

Here you can see the difference between the past tense for "standard" verbs

- sammeln - ich habe gesammelt

-->Use a form of 'haben':

ich habe
du hast
er/sie/es hat
wir haben
ihr habt
sie/Sie haben

and verbs which imply movement:

- gehen - ich bin gegangen

--> Use a form of 'sein':

ich bin
du bist
er/sie/es ist
wir sind
ihr seid
sie/Sie sind

Meine "Jause" (Austrian word for a cold meal also known as "Brotzeit" - bread time)

You usually eat such a snack when you have a break when you go hiking.

Sometimes in Germany you will have a meal like this for dinner.

It was very tasty! (I didn't eat all of that by myself)

This took me forever. I hope the next one gets easier:

Was packt Frau Pfennig ein?
Revise clothes vocabulary with this video.

For the verbs "(ein)packen" (to pack) and "haben" (to have) you use the Akkusativ case and I have used the indefinite article for most items:

masc --> einen
fem --> eine
neuter --> ein

Vocab:

der Koffer - suitcase
die Hose (Sg) - trousers
kurz - short
die Sandalen - sandals
die Turnschuhe - trainers
viele - many
langärmlig - long-sleeved
der Ärmel - sleeve
die Sonnenbrille (Sg) - sunglasses
wenn - when/if
weil - because
der Kulturbeutel/Waschbeutel - washbag
die Strickjacke - knitted jacket
der Pulli - jumper
der Kapuzenpulli - hoodie
wandern - to hike
das Buch - the book
der Schlafanzug (Sg) - pyjamas
die Regenjacke - rain jacket
hoffen - hope

Gute Nacht, meine Lieben!

der Endspurt-final spurt
geschafft-managed/achieved
wieder - again/once more

I have managed the last bit of the journey and I'm back in beautiful Munich! Goodnight, my lovelies (sounds less soppy in German 😉)

Jetzt bin ich in Düsseldorf. Mal sehen wie die Brezen hier sind...

Today I'm flying from Coventry via Düsseldorf to Munich!

Now I'm in Düsseldorf. Let's see what their Pretzels are like...

leider - sadly
schmecken-taste
sofort-immediately
sich etwas gönnen - to treat oneself to something

I LOVE Brezen! Sadly the ones in England don't taste as nice, so I immediately bought one in Germany (and treated myself to an Apfelschorle - half apple juice, half sparkling water).
