University of Chichester’s MA student performance company touring diverse repertoire across the UK
Mapdance are currently developing works with Richard Alston, Motionhouse, Liz Aggiss, Lila Dance and IL Dance. From mid-February to May, the company will tour these works nationally and internationally whilst also offering educational workshops.

Jon Mewett graduated from the University of Chichester in 2015 with a First Class (Hons) degree in Dance. During his time on the course he was a member of 3Fall Dance Company where he worked with choreographers Detta Howe, Ceyda Tanc and Stuart Waters. These experiences diversified his performative styles, building on his earlier training in ballet, tap, modern dance and hip-hop. In summer 2015, he was involved in a number of projects including choreographing for a youth company and performing in Figure and Rhythm - a site-specific work at Pallant House Gallery (UK). Jonathan is particularly interested in collaboration between dance and other art forms.

Mapper number 12:
Born in Gibraltar, Zoë Bishop began dancing at the Gibraltar Academy of Dance. In 2012 she started her training at Trinity Laban, graduating with a first class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance. At Trinity Laban she worked with choreographers Tony Thatcher and Struan Leslie. She particularly enjoyed performing in the Sasha Waltz repertoire and opportunities to push herself technically and creatively. Her work was selected for the BA2 Choreography Show and later for the City of London Festival. Her Independent Project was also staged at the Degree Show in her third year and she worked with Lea Anderson for the BBC4 documentary, ‘Strictly Modern Dance’. This led her to perform professionally for Lea Anderson in the summer after graduating.

Mapper number 11:
Ai Wen began to dance from the age of three and received ten years of ballet training at Liaoning Ballet School and Beijing Dance Academy, where she also studied contemporary and character dance. After graduating she joined the Chongqing Ballet Of China and The Hong Kong Ballet appearing in many ballet and contemporary dance performances and often dancing leading roles, including Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty.

Mapper number 10:
Alice White grew up in Cornwall and began her contemporary dance training at Truro College. She went on to train at Trinity Laban where she performed in works by Rudolf Laban, Gary Lambert, Struan Leslie and Fred Gerhig and gained a First Class (Hons) degree in Contemporary Dance. During her training Alice was awarded a part scholarship to train at the Martha Graham School in New York on the Summer Intensive course. She had the opportunity to work professionally with Lea Anderson as part of a BBC4 documentary. As well as performing, Alice also enjoys creating her own work; her film has been selected to be a part of Swallowsfeet Festival and A Day in The Life at Trinity Laban.

Josh Hutchby
Originally from Manchester, Josh began his dance training in 2010 at Pendleton College where he was taught by former Northern School of Contemporary Dance graduates Chris Keerie and Craig Horton. He was accepted to study at NSCD, where he received his Bachelor of Performing Arts (Hons) degree in July 2015. While there he had the pleasure of performing in the works of Shirley Jacobs, Cissie Redgwick, Carlos Pons Guerra, Samantha Broadbent and Ben Duke.

Mapper number 8:
Marika Thomson began dancing at a young age studying ballet, tap and modern dance at a local dance school. Throughout her youth she took part in a range of creative workshops and performed in a wide variety of shows. Her training began at The Henley College, where she performed as part of Pulse Dance Company. She went on to study at the University of Chichester, where she recently completed her BA (Hons) degree in Dance. While there she was a member of 3Fall Dance Company and worked with dance artists Ceyda Tanc, Stuart Waters and Detta Howe. During summer 2015 she performed in a variety of dance films and also at Camp Bestival.

Mapper number 7:
Amy Robyn Lyster is originally from Dublin, Ireland. In 2015 she graduated from The Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, at The Space, with a BA (Hons) in Dance. During her final year at The Space she performed in new works by Thomas Small, Annarita Mazzilli and Tess Letham. On completing her degree she received a place in the Irish graduate programme Step Up: Dance Project. During this time she worked with choreographer Helene Cathala on the creation of a new work, which culminated in a short tour during August 2015. After her MA she hopes to perform professionally in the UK and at home.

Mapper number 6:
Vikki Mead is originally from Horsham, Sussex, where she attended The College of Richard Collyer and discovered a passion for contemporary dance. As a member of West Sussex Youth Dance Company she worked with choreographers such as Justine Reeve, Tim Casson and Yael Flexer. She went on to study dance at degree level and has recently graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Contemporary Dance from Trinity Laban. Most recently, Vikki has worked with Lea Anderson filming a BBC Documentary.This opportunity led to an invitation to perform at Jules Wright’s Memorial Celebration, where the group recreated Smithereens. Vikki would like to thank Greenwich Blue Coat Foundation for a bursary, which is supporting her during her year
with mapdance.

Mapper number 5:
Brooke Purkis
After early training in ballet, tap and modern dance, Brooke was introduced to contemporary dance at the College of Richard Collyer where she studied A-level dance. She continued her training at the University of Chichester and graduated with a BA (Hons) Dance in 2015. During her time on the course, she found a passion for performing and choreographing, and wishes to pursue both these areas in the future. Brooke enjoys teaching, and has led company class for Hampshire Youth Dance Company, and is also interested in yoga and physical theatre.

Mapper number 4:
Sarahjane Earl has trained in ballet, modern, tap and other forms of dance. She studied at Trinity Laban for three years where, as part of her BA (Hons) degree in Contemporary Dance, she worked with choreographers Charles Linehan, Anna Williams and Gary Lambert. She also worked with Scottish Dance Theatre, current company members from Random (Wayne McGregor) and Tavaziva Dance Company. Sarah-Jane has taught both educational and youth groups, and during her younger days she gained experience performing in theatre and film.

Mapper number 3:
Xanthe Wilson is from Horsham, West Sussex. She started dancing at the Horsham School of Dance and went onto study dance at GCSE and A level. During this time she joined West Sussex Youth Dance Company and also performed in the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremonies. She gained a place at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, graduating with a First Class (Hons) degree in July 2015. During her three years she was inspired by work of choreographers such as Odette Hughes, Shirley Jacobs and Avatara Ayuso.

Mapper number 2:
Yasmin Loxham was introduced to contemporary dance when she performed with West Sussex Youth Dance Company. She trained at Chichester College, where she became passionate about performing and choreographing and went on to study at the University of Chichester, gaining a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance. During her time at university she was a member of 3Fall Dance Company and worked with choreographers Detta Howe, Ceyda Tanc, and Stuart Waters. Yasmin's choreography was selected for part of the 3fall tour, and was chosen by Pavilion Dance South West for performance at Camp Bestival.

Over the next two weeks we will be introducing the Mappers of 2016. To kickstart the week Mapper number 1:
Hester Gill began her training in contemporary dance with Puppik Youth Dance Company, where she worked with Lîla Dance,Tim Casson and Yael Flexer. She studied on the CAT scheme at Trinity Laban where she worked with Arthur Pita. She completed her BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban. Hester was a member of Shoreditch Youth Dance, performing in Stockholm Fringe Festival and in Matthew Bourne's New Adventure Choreographers Award for John Ross. She participated in BBC4's Strictly Modern Dance documentary working with Lea Anderson in re-staging Smithereens.
