Tragically, two young children have died within days of each other after choking on food. One little boy choked on a grape.

The size and shape of whole grapes means they can block a child’s airway and can be difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

That’s why grapes and other round foods such as cherry tomatoes, blueberries and cherries should be chopped in half lengthways and ideally in quarters before being given to children.

Autumnal fun with the Teeny Tiny Crew 💜

The Gruffalo - always a favourite!! We made scrambled snake, owl ice cream and roasted fox. Went to the woods for a lovely Gruffalo hunt foraging for “ingredients”, made a den, made Gruffalo soup and had story and music time while we waited for it to cook!! Oh and can’t forget Gruffalo crumble too!!

We’ve really enjoyed celebrating the arrival of Autumn. I love the change of seasons. I love them all - but it’s the transition that’s the best bit. Do you have a favourite?

I’ve been a bit quiet on here recently as we said a sad goodbye to three of our Teeny Tiny Crew. It’s the hardest part of my job as the children become part of our family and it’s so sad when they move on.

That followed by the sad passing of Her Majesty has made it a rather overwhelming time.

The new TTC are all “littlies” so are too young to understand everything that has been happening but we still wanted to mark this moment in history with them so one day they can look back and know they were part of a very historic week

Today we continued with our “under the sea” theme and tried seaweed! I’m sorry Itsu, it was definitely a thumbs down - tasted like licking the bottom of a pond! However, super impressed with all the children (all 4 and under) as they really gave it a good effort and tasted it several times. Braver than me 🤢

The toughest part of my job is saying goodbye so I treasure these final few precious moments with them hoping I’ve done all I can do to help them take their next steps in this roller coaster adventure called “life” 💜

This week we were teaching the children about sea pollution. They loved saving all the sea creatures that were tangled in lots of rubbish left behind my lazy humans and got lots of fine motor practice strengthening those little hands ready for learning to write 💜 We found a great Nick Cope song on YouTube - check it out! Luckily, a few sharp blows to the back sent the stubborn piece of doughnut flying out onto the kitchen floor.

But it's a reminder that choking is often completely silent with no sound to warn you something is wrong. That’s why it’s so important to stay with young children when they eat.

Toddlers are still learning to chew, swallow and breathe in the right order, so they can easily choke on food, especially if they’re not concentrating.

Keep your toddler safe when eating by:
🍏 Cutting up food into more manageable pieces. Think long and thin.
🍏 Encouraging them to sit still and concentrate
🍏 Staying with them until they’re finished
🍏 Avoiding foods like boiled sweets, lollipops and ice cubes which are too slippery for young children to manage
