Students explored battle sites โ๏ธ, wandered through trenches ๐ณ๏ธ, paid respects at memorials ๐๏ธ, walked solemnly in cemeteries ๐ท, and immersed themselves in museums ๐ฐ โ all associated with major offensives during the First World War. ๐

22 Further Maths GCSE students took part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice challenge and is open to students in Year 13 or below. Congratulations to all of our students who participated who came away with a mixture of Bronze ๐ฅ and Silver ๐ฅ awards! ๐งฎ๐๐
T-shirts and tea towels were being souped-up this week as the backstage team for Legally Blonde Jr take on the busy task of preparing costumes and props for this yearโs school production. ๐โจ๐ญ๐
Year 10 GCSE Drama students and selected Y9 students took part in a โDevising Workshopโ led by Farnborough 6th Form Students from the Prospect Theatre Company. ๐ญ๐๐
Recently, the PE department has been encouraging students and staff to get active. The departmentโs aim is for students to develop lifelong positive habits towards exercise and sport. The Fit4Life week is Tomlinscoteโs chance to celebrate the power of sport and exercise within our community. During the week, students had the opportunity to compete against Mr Mount in the Bleep test, form a team against Tomlinscote PE staff and Mr Frater in Dodgeball, and form a team against Tomlinscote Staff in Netball. ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐๐คพโโ๏ธ๐
On Wednesday 11th October, our Changemakers group were invited to Stamford Bridge to take part in an event to celebrate International Day of the Girl. ๐๐บ
Students were challenged to plan and make a prototype of a solar-powered car. ๐๐ Keira, Manesha, Ruby, and Courtney did an amazing job presenting their ideas to the rest of the room. ๐๐ฉโ๐ฌ๐๐ฃ๏ธ
Year 7 students have been reinforcing their learning of working with microscopes by examining cheek cells. ๐ฌ๐จโ๐ฌ๐ฌ
Prior to starting the experiment, students were asked to draw their prediction of what they might see. ๐จ๐๏ธ
Students were then tasked with swabbing their mouths with cotton buds and applying the sample to a slide. ๐ก๏ธ๐งช
The sample was then stained with color to help certain parts of the cell show up underneath the microscope's magnification. ๐๐ฌ๐๏ธ
Bakers from our 5 Houses came together to fight it out for the title of โTomlinscote Bake Off Championsโ. ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฉโ๐ณ

GCSE Drama students had a fantastic time working with Mike and Steve from Stage-ed as they developed their understanding of their set text Blood Brothers. ๐ญ๐ก
Having both performed in the West End production of the play, they were able to give the students a deep insight into the play; its background and how to interpret the characters. ๐๐
The students learnt how to perfect their Liverpudlian accent and stage some of the larger group scenes. ๐ค๐ค๐ฌ
On Thursday, 5th October, Tomlinscote welcomed 22 students and 2 teachers from our partner school in Almerรญa, Spain ๐ค as part of the Spanish Exchange. On Wednesday, Tomlinscote students and teachers joined them for our joint trip to London ๐ฌ๐ง, where they all took in the main sights - London Eye ๐ก, Houses of Parliament ๐๏ธ, Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade ๐, St Jamesโ Park ๐ณ, Buckingham Palace ๐ฐ, Trafalgar Square ๐๏ธ, and Covent Gardens ๐ธ. There were lots of sore legs and feet after that! ๐ฃ๐๐๏ธ
The new Year 10 GCSE Engineering class struck gold recently with a Lego-based engineering workshop delivered by Jackson Civils through the 'Speakers for Schools' program. ๐๐ง๐งฑ The students recently spent a afternoon working on practical-based activities related to engineering. ๐จ๐ทโโ๏ธ This is a new GCSE course now offered at Tomlinscote, and it was great for these students to experience a STEM-related activity within the context of their new learning. ๐๐ฌ๐๏ธ
Year 10 Art & Photography Trip to Kew Gardens ๐จ๐ธ โ iPads and lily pads! ๐ฑ๐ฑ Students used pens ๐๏ธโ๏ธ and lenses ๐ท to capture the beautiful pictures they drew and photographed while on a stunning trip to Kew Gardens. ๐ท๐ฟ๐ผ
Farnborough Sixth Form played host to 33 Tomlinscote students recently ๐ซ๐ฅ in advance of the collegeโs open days. The students were invited to see the college in action ๐๐, visit live lessons ๐๐ฉโ๐ซ, and experience the buzz of a college with around 4000 students ๐๐ข.
Congratulations ๐๐ to all of the students pictured above ๐ท who entered a writing competition run by ' Young Writers ' โ๏ธ๐. The remit was to write a 100-word saga about a crime ๐๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ! Our students managed to write such wonderful literary pieces ๐๐ that the organization has confirmed that they would like to publish our students' work ๐ฐ๐.

Year 10 Creative Media students โจ๐ฝ๏ธ made the most of their trip to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London ๐ฐ. They benefitted from a specialist workshop on costume and characterisation ๐๐ , and discovered how costumes were designed ๐งโโ๏ธ๐งฅ. Students then had the opportunity to create their own ideas ๐ก, with the use of green screen technology ๐๐ฅ. A tour then followed during a special Dark Arts feature and students got to experience the true magic of film making ๐งโโ๏ธ๐ฌ. Seeing the film industry come to light provided our students with a truly spellbinding experience!
Year 7 students ๐ช๐ ๐ฅ have been honing their knife skills in Food Technology ๐ฝ๏ธ๐ฉโ๐ณ. They have concentrated on safe cutting techniques ๐ช while slicing and dicing vegetables for their salad jars. Students added other ingredients like pasta and various tasty dressings which were then shaken to ensure that all ingredients were coated. The jars also ensured that they traveled home safely! ๐ก๐
The sun shone down on the Tomlinscote community โ๏ธ๐ซ and added to the sheer joy of students and staff taking part in Tomlinscoteโs Race for Life ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐. Over the course of the day, Year 7 โ 11 ๐๐ง๐ฆ ran, walked, 3-legged around the school site and field ๐โโ๏ธ๐ถโโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ. The atmosphere was fantastic , and it was great to see the school coming together for Cancer Research UK ๐๏ธ.

Emily in Year 8 ๐๐ง has just competed at the 2023 British National Championships in Birmingham. As we have learnt to expect with Emily ๐๐, she did rather well! Emily was 1st ๐ฅ out of over 30 girls in her tumbling category ๐คธโโ๏ธ๐ช.
On 10th September, ๐ 8 students ๐งโ๐, 2 members of staff ๐จโ๐ซ๐ฉโ๐ซ, and 5 families ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ฆ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ฆโ๐ฆ went to Dunsfold airfield โ๏ธ to race in the heats for the international finals at Goodwood ๐ in October. The races were against the clock to see who could go the furthest in two 90 minute races each with a pair of charged 12-volt batteries . We improved significantly from our last heat at Goodwood, going further ๐๏ธ at a good steady pace ๐, beating our local engineering rivals, Collingwood ๐, in both races!
7H had a fun Science lesson recently, where they were exploring bugs in the wood chip area. ๐๐๐ฟ They had a brilliant time comparing all the sizes of the bugs and looking at how theyโve adapted to the environment around them. ๐๐ณ๐๐

Amelia and Shereena ๐ entered the "Japan Language Championship for Young Learners UK" known as "JaLaChamp '23"! ๐ฏ๐ต This is the second year that Tomlinscote has entered students. The competition is run by the Japan Foundation. ๐ธ Amelia and Shereena in Year 10 attended the "Final's day" in London where they came runners up for the video category ๐ฅ๐น
Year 7 students were delighted to be awarded their ๐ฅ Bunsen burner licences ๐ฅ last week after practising how to use them safely. To be issued with a licence, students had to show they could set up the apparatus, light the burner, use a safety and heating flame to boil some water, turn it off ๐ฅ, and let it cool โ๏ธ before packing away. ๐งช๐๐

Recently, Drama Club ๐ญ performed a rhyming version of Wind in the Willows to an audience of invited guests. The classic tale of friendship and adventure ๐โจ was given a modern and creative spin by the club and everyone enjoyed the show ๐๐.

Emily in 7H, travelled to Portugal to take part in the Scalabis Cup as reported a couple of weeks ago. We are delighted to confirm that Emily won the gold medal in the 11-12 age range. She went in to finals in 1st place out of 17 and managed to hold her position throughout.
