Students explored battle sites โš”๏ธ, wandered through trenches ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ, paid respects at memorials ๐Ÿ›๏ธ, walked solemnly in cemeteries ๐ŸŒท, and immersed themselves in museums ๐Ÿฐ โ€” all associated with major offensives during the First World War. ๐ŸŒŸ

22 Further Maths GCSE students took part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice challenge and is open to students in Year 13 or below. Recently, the PE department has been encouraging students and staff to get active. The departmentโ€™s aim is for students to develop lifelong positive habits towards exercise and sport. The Fit4Life week is Tomlinscoteโ€™s chance to celebrate the power of sport and exercise within our community. During the week, students had the opportunity to compete against Mr Mount in the Bleep test, form a team against Tomlinscote PE staff and Mr Frater in Dodgeball, and form a team against Tomlinscote Staff in Netball. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿคพโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŽ‰

On Wednesday 11th October, our Changemakers group were invited to Stamford Bridge to take part in an event to celebrate International Day of the Girl. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿšบ

Year 7 students have been reinforcing their learning of working with microscopes by examining cheek cells. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Prior to starting the experiment, students were asked to draw their prediction of what they might see. ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Students were then tasked with swabbing their mouths with cotton buds and applying the sample to a slide. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿงช

The sample was then stained with color to help certain parts of the cell show up underneath the microscope's magnification. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

GCSE Drama students had a fantastic time working with Mike and Steve from Stage-ed as they developed their understanding of their set text Blood Brothers. ๐ŸŽญ๐Ÿ’ก

Having both performed in the West End production of the play, they were able to give the students a deep insight into the play; its background and how to interpret the characters. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”

The students learnt how to perfect their Liverpudlian accent and stage some of the larger group scenes. ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿค๐ŸŽฌ

On Thursday, 5th October, Tomlinscote welcomed 22 students and 2 teachers from our partner school in Almerรญa, Spain ๐Ÿค as part of the Spanish Exchange. On Wednesday, Tomlinscote students and teachers joined them for our joint trip to London ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง, where they all took in the main sights - London Eye ๐ŸŽก, Houses of Parliament ๐Ÿ›๏ธ, Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade ๐ŸŽ, St Jamesโ€™ Park ๐ŸŒณ, Buckingham Palace ๐Ÿฐ, Trafalgar Square ๐ŸŸ๏ธ, and Covent Gardens ๐ŸŒธ. There were lots of sore legs and feet after that! ๐Ÿ‘ฃ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ™๏ธ

The new Year 10 GCSE Engineering class struck gold recently with a Lego-based engineering workshop delivered by Jackson Civils through the 'Speakers for Schools' program. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿงฑ The students recently spent a afternoon working on practical-based activities related to engineering. ๐Ÿ”จ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ This is a new GCSE course now offered at Tomlinscote, and it was great for these students to experience a STEM-related activity within the context of their new learning. ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Farnborough Sixth Form played host to 33 Tomlinscote students recently ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ‘ฅ in advance of the collegeโ€™s open days. The students were invited to see the college in action ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ“š, visit live lessons ๐ŸŽ’๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ, and experience the buzz of a college with around 4000 students ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ“ข.

Year 10 Creative Media students โœจ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ made the most of their trip to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London ๐Ÿฐ. They benefitted from a specialist workshop on costume and characterisation ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ‘ , and discovered how costumes were designed ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿงฅ. Students then had the opportunity to create their own ideas ๐Ÿ’ก, with the use of green screen technology ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽฅ. A tour then followed during a special Dark Arts feature and students got to experience the true magic of film making ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŽฌ. Seeing the film industry come to light provided our students with a truly spellbinding experience!

Year 7 students ๐Ÿ”ช๐Ÿ…๐Ÿฅ’ have been honing their knife skills in Food Technology ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ. They have concentrated on safe cutting techniques ๐Ÿ”ช while slicing and dicing vegetables for their salad jars. Students added other ingredients like pasta and various tasty dressings which were then shaken to ensure that all ingredients were coated. The jars also ensured that they traveled home safely! ๐Ÿก๐Ÿš—

The sun shone down on the Tomlinscote community โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿซ and added to the sheer joy of students and staff taking part in Tomlinscoteโ€™s Race for Life ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’“. Over the course of the day, Year 7 โ€“ 11 ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿ‘ฆ ran, walked, 3-legged around the school site and field ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ. The atmosphere was fantastic , and it was great to see the school coming together for Cancer Research UK ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ.

Emily in Year 8 ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘ง has just competed at the 2023 British National Championships in Birmingham. As we have learnt to expect with Emily ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ†, she did rather well! Emily was 1st ๐Ÿฅ‡ out of over 30 girls in her tumbling category ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช.

On 10th September, ๐Ÿ“… 8 students ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŽ“, 2 members of staff ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ, and 5 families ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ went to Dunsfold airfield โœˆ๏ธ to race in the heats for the international finals at Goodwood ๐Ÿ in October. The races were against the clock to see who could go the furthest in two 90 minute races each with a pair of charged 12-volt batteries . We improved significantly from our last heat at Goodwood, going further ๐ŸŽ๏ธ at a good steady pace ๐Ÿš€, beating our local engineering rivals, Collingwood ๐Ÿ†, in both races!

7H had a fun Science lesson recently, where they were exploring bugs in the wood chip area. ๐Ÿž๐Ÿœ๐ŸŒฟ They had a brilliant time comparing all the sizes of the bugs and looking at how theyโ€™ve adapted to the environment around them. ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Amelia and Shereena ๐Ÿ† entered the "Japan Language Championship for Young Learners UK" known as "JaLaChamp '23"! ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต This is the second year that Tomlinscote has entered students. The competition is run by the Japan Foundation. ๐ŸŒธ Amelia and Shereena in Year 10 attended the "Final's day" in London where they came runners up for the video category ๐Ÿฅˆ๐Ÿ“น

Year 7 students were delighted to be awarded their ๐Ÿ”ฅ Bunsen burner licences ๐Ÿ”ฅ last week after practising how to use them safely. To be issued with a licence, students had to show they could set up the apparatus, light the burner, use a safety and heating flame to boil some water, turn it off ๐Ÿ”ฅ, and let it cool โ„๏ธ before packing away. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ‘

Recently, Drama Club ๐ŸŽญ performed a rhyming version of Wind in the Willows to an audience of invited guests. The classic tale of friendship and adventure ๐ŸŒŸโœจ was given a modern and creative spin by the club and everyone enjoyed the show ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘.

Emily in 7H, travelled to Portugal to take part in the Scalabis Cup as reported a couple of weeks ago. We are delighted to confirm that Emily won the gold medal in the 11-12 age range. She went in to finals in 1st place out of 17 and managed to hold her position throughout.
