What support do you give your child with Maths? You are after all their biggest influence.
Here are some suggestions.
1. Be involved and encouraging, ask your child regularly about what they are learning at school.
2. Look at their school books and ask them questions about what they have learned. Are they understanding the material or struggling?
3. Help them learn tables. Wall charts, ipad apps, quick test in the car, whatever it takes. They should know them all thoroughly by year 6.
4. Make sure they can tell the time. Have analogue and digital clocks at home and get your child using them.
5. Use and reinforce Maths skills wherever possible eg measuring height, weighing ingredients, how much change from ยฃ10 will I get? etc
6. Be positive, take care not to pass on your own negativity. โ I was always rubbish at Mathsโ, โItโs no good asking me, I canโt do Mathsโ etc
7. Attend parents evening and read reports. Find out what your childโs weaknesses are.
8. Make sure your child progresses as expected for their age with extra practice and by targeting any weaknesses. Consider hiring a tutor for this.

Top 5 benefits of Maths tuition.
Maths along with English and Science are arguably the most important school subjects. Maths is a vital part of a studentโs success in education, future career and everyday life. For some students Maths can present a considerable challenge while others may wish to achieve top grades to pursue higher education and better careers options.
1. Fixing problem areas.
A Maths tutor will find topics which a student has not understood, found difficult or forgotten and will target them.
2. Individual attention.
In a classroom situation a student may be left behind, unable to keep up while others could learn more quickly. A tuition session goes at the pace of the student, if anything is unclear the student can ask for further explanation until the topic if fully understood.
3. Improved exam results.
Tuition is geared towards achieving the highest possible grades through exam practice and improving exam technique.
4. Better progress at school.
For most students having a tutor complements their school studies. Once problem areas have been addressed they are better able to keep up during lessons.
5. Improved motivation and confidence.
It is common to hear someone say they are not good at Maths. Tuition can provide a positive learning experience where the student will succeed.
