In it, you'll learn what LinkedIn is and why it's such a valuable tool in your career search, how to set up your LinkedIn profile, and how to use it as a personal branding tool. In a few weeks' time, Ben from year 13 will be doing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of mental health charity MIND - in his words, he wants to 'help and support others by raising money and showing them that no matter what they are going through there are people out there that want to help'. If you'd like to donate to this very important cause, you can do so by clicking here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/hc2c5-yorkshire-3-peaks?utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer
Yesterday we were joined by Tim from Amazing Apprenticeships, who returned to give year 13 a more in-depth presentation on what to expect from an assessment centre and how to prepare for one. This should be relevant to all of year 13, regardless of their intended route post-18.
Tim's presentation drew heavily on the RateMyApprenticeship website, which is well worth a look if you're even considering an apprenticeship. It's like Trip Advisor, only for careers! Click here to find out more - and you could even sign up for their Autumn Apprenticeship Event this coming Tuesday: https://www.ratemyapprenticeship.co.uk/
We found this on the Aldi Careers UK page - it may not be relevant to our current year 13 students, but it will be a fantastically helpful opportunity for somebody so we're posting it anyway...
...If you're thinking of taking your first steps into farming but aren't sure about putting all your eggs in one basket, you can learn more about the amazing world of agriculture with Opening the Gate – a series of workshops aimed at people who are new to the industry.
Aldi UK have partnered with the The Prince's Countryside Fund to support people wanting to step into a career in agriculture, and you can join them on Monday 21st November at 7pm for their first session aimed at school and college leavers. You’ll hear from our amazing workshop speakers Ed, Ernie and Liz, talking about their top tips ‘til the cows come home. 🐮 Sign up here: https://www.princescountrysidefund.org.uk/.../opening.../
Today we welcomed Julie Smith - who used to be our school nurse and is now a Nurse Practitioner in the cardiology department of the John Radcliffe Hospital - who came to give year 13 a fantastic and comprehensive presentation about careers in the NHS.
There are an astonishing 350 possible career paths in the NHS! You can register your interest in NHS careers and download their free booklet here: https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/career-planning/career-advisers-and-teachers/nhs-health-careers-literature
This afternoon we took year 13 to the Safe Drive Stay Alive Tour 2022 in Milton Keynes. The presentation is designed to 'reach new and pre-drivers in an emotive and hard-hitting way, influencing behaviour and attitude on the roads'. We really hope it made our young people think hard about their attitude to driving - just say the journey home was quite a bit quieter than the outward one...
For all those A Level Law students out there!
Degree Apprenticeships in Law - I've done the searching 🕵️♂️ for you!!
When I give a school talk, or run a webinar about Degree Apprenticeships, I'm often asked about opportunities in law 👩🏽⚖️
People know law degree apprenticeships exist....but when they look they can't really see any vacancies 🤷♂️....or maybe just one or two.
So I've done the detective work for you, and found the opportunities that are open for applications right now - and there's a whole bunch of them! 😃
They're a bit London-centred but there are some vacancies across the UK.
I'm not sure why Solicitor Degree Apprenticeship vacancies are so hidden away and aren't on the Government's Apprenticeships website......I'll be posting more about that later this week. They do seem a bit 'hidden away'. 🔎
In the meantime, here's 👇the link to a pdf all the current vacancies I've found for you to check out.
Closing dates and A Level grades needed vary, so do check each one carefully.
Yesterday we welcomed Tim from Amazing Apprenticeships, who came to deliver an 'apprenticeship search and registration' workshop to year 13. Tim took us through the basics of registering on the gov.uk apprenticeships website, the difference between the various apprenticeship levels (levels 4 to 6 are most relevant to us), how to interpret the wealth of information on the gov.uk site, and the benefits of apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships in comparison to the more traditional routes. Tim will be returning next Friday for a more in-depth workshop on applying for an apprenticeship.
Today we observed the two minute silence at 11am, to remember and give thanks for the people who help and protect others now and who have done so in the past, remembering in particular all those who have been hurt or killed as a result.
Yesterday Mr. Kingsley delivered an excellent and very moving assembly which asked the questions, 'who do we remember?' and 'how do we remember?'

This afternoon we welcomed Dean Jones from the University of Buckingham, who came to introduce year 13 to the huge benefits of having a profile on LinkedIn. As the world's largest professional social networking site, LinkedIn is used by many businesses as a vital recruiting tool. It's also an enormously useful way of networking and getting information on companies before you make an application. We've challenged year 13 to set up their own LinkedIn profiles, and Dean has very kindly offered to give students constructive feedback on them. Don't forget, too, that STFS Sixth Form has its own LinkedIn profile and alumni network, which is another way for past students to use their connection with the school to build up their own network post A Levels.
