As driving instructors we can only advise people about their readiness to take a test!
You may think you are driving well when the instructor is:
Telling you when to change gear!
Asking you what the speed limit is!
Talking you through every manoeuvre!
Telling you which lane to be in!
Reminding you which exit to come off of on a roundabout because you forget!
Helping you when you can’t workout if there is enough space for you to get your car through!
If all or any of the above apply to you, then you are not test ready!
When the door shuts and it’s just you and the examiner, the car is the loneliest place to be, when you make a mistake and your brain goes to mush it’s the worst feeling ever!
Remember those family and friends who urge you to just have a go for the experience, aren’t the ones having to go through it, people have very selective memory’s when it comes to driving and tests!
Ask anyone who has failed a test if it was a nice experience!
Remember it’s YOU doing the test, no one else, no phone to google answers, no help from anyone else just YOU!
If you are up to standard, you will still be nervous, but you won’t be doubtful of your ability!
Go look in the mirror and have a straight talk with yourself!
Would you take an A level if you hadn’t studied enough and then expect to pass it?

Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse or rider. Look out for horse riders’ and horse drivers’ signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard.

• •use your mirrors to make sure you know the position and movement of traffic behind you

• give a right-turn signal

• take up a position just left of the middle of the road or in the space marked for traffic turning right

• leave room for other vehicles to pass on the left, if possible.

Driving examiner strike: candidates urged to attend tests

Driving test candidates with tests on Thursday 10 July should still come for their test despite the threat of strike action by examiners.

Driving examiners who are members of the Public and Commercial Service union are planning to take strike action onThursday 10 July 2014.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is doing everything it can to make sure that tests go ahead as planned and urges all candidates to come for their test as usual.

You won’t have to contact DVSA to rebook if you can’t take your test because of the strike action. You should hear from the agency with a new date within 5 to 10 working days.

Out-of-pocket expenses

You can claim out-of-pocket expenses if your test is cancelled, but you must have turned up for your test to do this. If you don’t turn up, you’ll have to rebook your own test and you won’t be able to claim expenses.

You’ll still be able to book, change or cancel practical driving tests online on GOV.UK.
