The Great Exhibition is widely seen as a statement of Victorian self-confidence, but its roots can be traced to a widespread concern about the state of industrial design in Britain. So, what were the real aims behind the Exhibition, and how were they fulfilled?
What concerns did such a radically novel event raise for Victorian society? What was the experience like for visitors? Why was it such a huge success at the time? And what was its lasting impact?
Find out the answer to all of these questions by joining us for this one-off day school this Saturday 13th November, 10:30am - 1pm.

Online course - Female Suffrage: a County Perspective - Course Ref: C3747022
Women’s suffrage had been a hotly debated subject for over 50 years prior to the passing of the Representation of the People Act on the 6th February 1918. However, the vote was only extended to women over 30 and then only if they met the £5 property qualification. In this course we explore this journey from the Berkshire perspective, using local press coverage and suffrage literature to establish the progress of the movement within a contextual framework and follow its progress until legislation finally gave women franchise equality.

Online course - Climate Change: An Essential Guide to the Science with Pearl Ryall - Course Ref: C3746862
Life as we know it on earth would not be possible without carbon. Now this humble element has entered the language in many ways – carbon budget, carbon footprint, carbon negative, carbon capture. What do these terms mean and how are they quantified? Living things get most of the carbon they need from the carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans, but this delicate balance is under threat because of human activity. We will look at the impact of rising levels of carbon dioxide through study of the carbon and water cycles, energy systems and resource management, and conservation of biodiversity. The course will encourage students to evaluate the policy commitments and, more importantly, action being taken by government, corporations and civil society as the UK hosts COP 26.

Online course - Versatile Architects of the Italian Renaissance
Course Ref: C3747012
We will consider the work of the most outstanding individual architects who led the rebirth of classical architecture in Italy, but becoming designers of buildings after apprenticeships in other fields. Michelangelo's architectural works in Florence and Rome are perhaps overshadowed by his early command of sculpture and fresco painting - yet his building design work at St Peter's alone would have secured the reputation of any other architect. Donato Bramante is recognised for his role in the development of High Renaissance architecture but his early work was illusionistic painting. Palladio trained as a stone cutter before becoming recognised as a gifted architect. Raphael grew up in his father's painting workshop in Urbino and develped his skills under Perugino, and produced works such as the School of Athens in the Vatican palace -. yet he also takes his place among architects - in charge at St Peter's from 1514, and designing the Villa Madama for Pope Leo X.
