Honey bees, quite like ourselves, work best in weather conditions suited to their temperament. They like quiet, warm and sunny weather:
Earth School Bee School will be postponed if there is non bee-friendly weather. The beehives must not be opened when it is raining. Read on to find out why...
Fun fact: Did you know that bees can detect changes in air pressure? Not only can they predict rainfall, but they can estimate its intensity.
When strong winds or rain are present (a drop in air pressure), or when it happens to be cold, bees very sensibly stay inside their hives and wait until there is some improvement in the weather.
Even if itβs just misting, the mist can accumulate on a beeβs body and interfere with its flight. The water will also weigh the bee down and impede the beeβs wing beats which happen at a rate of about 12,000 beats per minute!
If the rain is heavy with large raindrops, the large drops can hit a bee in flight and knock it down similar to being hit by a blast from a water cannon!
Quiz: Rain also affects nectar which affects bees, but do you know how?
Comment below if you have the answer.
