Stones In His Pockets Review
By Robin Elliott
I can’t believe its been over 20 years since Stones In His Pockets had its premiere! Its one of those plays that I always meant to get around to seeing but didn’t………until now!

So, yes its back out on tour and this 14 week revival of Stones In Pockets is produced by Theatre Royal Bath and Rose Theatre Kingston. Written by Marie Jones, this multi award winning show tells the story of two film extras (Jake & Charlie) who get a job (earning £40 a day) appearing in crowd scenes for a massive Hollywood blockbuster movie which is being shot in a village in County Kerry. Charlie is on the run from a number of business problems while Jake seems to be related to everyone in the village.

For anyone who has ever been an extra in a movie – you will know what its like, the long hours, the waiting around between takes, retake after retake, the Directors, the Assistant Directors and of course the catering truck. It can be a pretty awful experience just to earn a few quid but Marie Jones captures exactly what its like!

In Stones In His Pockets there are just two actors on stage playing around 15 different characters, which of course can prove a very difficult task switching quickly from person to person. Owen Sharpe and Kevin Trainor take on the roles of the two extras Jake & Charlie. Kevin Trainor also does a good job of taking on the roles of Hollywood Movie Star Caroline Giovanni and Scottish Security Guard Jock Campbell while Owen Sharpe also moves from character to character with the most stand out being Aisling, the Assistant Director. I must also congratulate Kevin on what I thought was a pretty good Ballycastle accent, even if some of the other audience members didn’t agree with me. Both actors have some great physical comedy moments in the show.

So, twenty years on, some of the topics seem slightly dated but it was also good to hear references to the classic movie The Quiet Man and you will have a giggle at The Riverdance Scene. I must also mention Peter McKintosh’s set design which makes you feel part of the action in the County Kerry countryside. The set is simple and quite big but some times you feel the actors seem a little lost in it all. Howard Harrison’s Lighting Design is also great changing through various stages of the day.

You can catch Stones In His Pockets at Belfast’s Grand Opera House until Saturday! To book tickets click here - https://www.goh.co.uk/whats-on/stones-in-his-pockets/
