Always fun getting a jam with you and helping you learn songs and just general banter. If you keep playing music then you'll see me around eventually. I'll try and get to your end of year shows - so they better be good... Big love. Scullion OUT! (***drops mic***)

[03/17/20]   **COVID-19 UPDATE**

In light of the current circumstances around Covid-19, the School of Creative and Digital Industries has decided to schedule staff development days on the 18th, 19th and 20th of March. This is to allow staff the time to prepare for possible college closure. Students will not be on campus and student activity (e.g. timetabled classes) will not take place for the remainder of this week. We understand that this situation may be worrying for you all but please be aware that we will do our best to keep you informed as the situation changes. For now please refer to college communications and follow social media channels for up to date information.

Could students please share this in their class group chats?

Moving On Music

We received an incredible email a couple of weeks ago. The emailer (who wished to remain anonymous) is donating two beautiful guitars and wants us to help find them a home. We want each guitar to go to a musician in need, who will use it regularly and (hopefully) help advance their career.

The two guitars are;

• Gibson ES175D Jazz Guitar – manufactured at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo in 1981
• Epiphone EA-250 – manufactured in Japan for the Gibson/Epiphone company in 1971/2

If you feel you could benefit from this beautiful opportunity, please email [email protected] before Friday 6 March. The email should include;

• Subject Line: Donated Guitar
• Email: which guitar are you enquiring about, where you are based, a brief overview of why you’re the right person to receive it, why it would benefit you (no essays please), and a link or two to your work.

Please share widely. There are no strings attached (there are strings attached), we just want to make sure each guitar finds the right home!

MOM

edit: we'll be going through all the emails after the 6th March, so won't be able to reply straight away. 👍

[12/12/19]   *ALL FULL-TIME LEVEL 3 and HND MUSIC STUDENTS*

Week beginning 16th December is break out week. Your regular classes will not run (unless advised otherwise by your class tutors) but registers will be taken and you are expected to be in college working on competition entries and assignment work.

We will be hosting our own in-house Music Skills competition in the Oh Yeah Centre on Thursday 19th. The Competition will run from 10am to 4pm. There will be 6 categories, they are detailed below:

• COVER BAND – 2 songs that have been written by other artists. You will be marked on your interpretation of the songs, musicality, technical accuracy, presentation, professionalism and communication with the audience. 3 -7 people in the band.
• ORIGINAL BAND - 2 original songs that have been written by/within the band. You will be marked on the strength of your songwriting, musicality, technical accuracy, presentation, professionalism and communication with the audience. 3 -7 people in the band.
• SINGER-SONGWRITER – one song that is written to a given brief. The brief will be released on Monday morning and you will have to perform your song and submit a copy of your lyrics at the competition on Thursday. This can be a solo entry or a two-piece.
• ELECTRONIC PERFORMANCE (NAME TBC) – 1-4 members. Can be in any style/genre but must make significant use of technology and live experimentation. Can have live audio sources. 5-10 min set
• SOUNDTRACK – Competitors will be emailed the video on Monday on request. There will be a director’s brief included this year which will specify composition & sound design. File must be submitted in WAV format.
• REMIX – Create a new track based on provided stems, 2.5 to 4 minutes in duration. These will be released on Monday morning. We are not looking for replication, don’t be afraid to get creative, and use a recognisable and prominent amount of the original stems throughout. File must be submitted as an mp3.

You must enter at least one category.

Each band / solo act must register for each category you wish to enter. Please email [email protected] with your registration and a tech spec. You should include names of all people concerned, instrumentation, the name of the category(ies) you are entering and tech spec. If you do not register or provide a tech spec you cannot play on the day. We will process the entries and let you know by email and/or Facebook on Wednesday afternoon what time your event will be at on the Thursday.

You will have Monday to Wednesday to prepare. To book rehearsal time in the OhYeah Centre please email [email protected]. To book the DJ room in Millfield and rehearsal space for Electronic Performance please email [email protected].

The winners of each category will go on to represent Belfast Met at the prestigious Music Skills NI competition, which NRC are hosting this year in the Riverside Theatre, Coleraine on Tuesday 24th March where you will represent us against the other five Regional Colleges. This is a great opportunity to receive feedback from industry professionals and to have your work showcased in a great venue.
