On the topic of ‘making weight’, whether that applies to an endurance sport like rowing and jockeying, or to a fighting sport like boxing and wrestling, many coaches have set strategies to meet weigh-in requirements, often to the detriment of the athlete’s health and performance. However, there are more personalised, health-focused approaches that honour the overall context of the athlete’s life, and which leave them in a better condition post-competition.

Looking beyond the pre-competition dieting process, Paul Ehren will be asking you to consider the manipulation of body composition over a variety of sports, how the nature of the sport will dictate the approach, why we need to look further than nutrition advice, and to our responsibilities to our clients year round.

Paul will also consider current research recommendations and how these may differ from the actual reality of working with athletes.

This is not intended to be a straightforward ‘how to’ guide to helping an athlete lose weight, but rather a broader look at body composition across a range of sporting modalities and how practice can contradict theory.

Is a Vegan Diet Healthy?

I've just read through this article on vegetarian and veganism on the Nutrition in Focus site (the Clinical Education site from the Nutri Link guys). It has summarised nicely the nutritional concerns of following a vegetarian, and especially vegan, diet. This article is therefore a really important read in this era of vegan popularity - a vegan approach is possible for many people, but they really do need to be highly conscious about their choices. The writers of this article also finished off by noting that the Mediterranean 'diet' has shown equally good benefits for cardiovascular health as vegetarian and vegan approaches, so if your focus is more about health than animal ethics, this is an important point to take.
