I Get Maths | Childrens Maths Tuition Aylesbury

To all our wonderful parents of IGM/IGW students,

Just in case you haven't seen the email we have sent you, here's the plan!

I Get Maths and I Get Writing
COVID-19 Coronavirus Update

Live online classes start Monday!!
I get maths and I get writing classes will continue at the church up to and including this Friday. From Monday (23 March), we will transfer to live online classes through Zoom.us until such time as we are able to return to our normal venue.

Because schools will have closed by then, the class scheduled for 9.00am to 10.30am on Saturday 21 March will be rescheduled for Saturday 03 April (the first Saturday of the Easter break, which was not originally scheduled to be a session).

All live online classes will take place on the same day and at the same time as your child’s regular class.

Classes will be held on the scheduled dates that you received at the beginning of the school year. A copy is attached to this email for information. There is also a copy of these dates on our website www.igetmaths.org.

Download the free ZOOM.US app in advance of your child’s first class. Make sure you download it onto the device your child will use for classes. We advise strongly that this is done well in advance.

How to download the app for a laptop, desktop, Macbook or iMac:
Click on the following link https://zoom.us/download
Click on the download button under Zoom client for meetings
How to download the app on an Android or Apple phone or tablet:
Go to the App Store and enter zoom.us into the search bar, then download the app in the normal way

Approximately 10 minutes before the class is about to start, you will receive an email inviting your child to Join the Meeting (our class!)
Please note: This email must be received on the same device that your child will use to participate in the live online class.
They will first need to click on the link under Join Zoom Meeting
Then click Join with Video
Then click Call using Internet Audio
Your child will then appear on our screen and we will appear on theirs.

Students can join the class at any stage during the scheduled time so, if they are unavoidably delayed, they can still join the class. Please join the class on time wherever possible
We will talk your child through the functions of the platform in the first few minutes of the first session and thereafter as required.

The first booklets have been given out directly to your child in sessions this week. We will also email them to all students over the weekend so any children who could not attend will also have the materials.
Once we complete these booklets, we will email the next booklets in advance of the live online class so students can either can either print them off, or view them on screen and then work on paper.

Your child will need a device (as detailed previously);
The appropriate booklet either printed off or on the screen with paper to work on;
An appropriate workspace, as free from distraction as possible;
Normal stationery such as pencils and rulers;
An adult to help get them signed in (as appropriate)
A focussed attitude!!

Thank you as ever for your ongoing and loyal support. Please do not hesitate to call us if you need any support or further information.

We will continue to work hard in partnership with you and your children to keep our learning community thriving and together.

Kindest regards,

Marc, Matt, Christine and Emma

Just a reminder that I Get Maths and I Get Writing sessions start up again from Saturday 27th April. Hope everyone had a great Easter and see you all soon!

Our students have been writing peaceful protest speeches. They have identified a problem, offered a solution and called their listeners to action. Here's a sample from one of our Key Stage 2 groups:

When the time comes, we will be able to appear together as one unit, one nation, one society, in a place where people can be equal and free: free to be themselves.

I have a vision, that everyone has the respect that each human deserves.
I have a vision, that my children will grow up in a world where they will be safe: safe to walk the streets of their home town; safe to look out of their window without fear of being seen and safe to speak up for what they believe in.
I have a vision, that all people, regardless of race, colour and gender, shall meet, not to criticise but, to compromise.
I have a vision, that a world without discrimination of any kind is a world that we can ALL enjoy living in.
I have a vision, that the sons of the oppressed and the sons of the oppressors will be able to stand together as one united people.

We understand that the road to freedom is a bumpy one.
We realise that one individual cannot walk this road alone.
We must, therefore, walk as one nation, one chain, one united group of citizens of the world.
I have a vision that stands out from them all, a vision that can become a reality.
Let us all make this vision come true today.

Inspired by Wordsworth's 'The Prelude', our primary students have been exploring romanticism, writing in free verse, describing a journey with a change of mood. Here's a sample of their work:

One Summer evening, ambling through the tranquil woods,
Following the stars glinting in the night sky,
I heard the birds singing, high up in the emerald trees,
I saw the moonlight shimmering on the lake in the distance.
As the wind brushed gently across my cheeks,
I fixed my view upon my angle and strode on.
With his outstretched arms,
The giant oak reached out to welcome me.
Lost in my own thoughts, the light beginning to fade,
I found myself enveloped by the trees around me,
The giant oak, dark and huge, looming over me, pursuing me.
Trembling, I backed away, stumbling towards the light,
Beyond the trees, beneath the sky,
Where I can breathe again.

Just to let all of our Friday and Saturday students know that I Get Maths sessions will go ahead as normal today and tomorrow. Have fun in the snow and see you later.

Inspired by the true story of Henry 'Box' Brown, who escaped from slavery by mailing himself to freedom, our I Get Writing students have produced some super pieces of writing. Here's an example of what they achieved:

Henry’s Freedom Box

As the boat sailed away, thoughts of my family rushed through my muddled head; all my loved ones gone. I had lost: lost my family, and lost, too, the most precious thing in my life, my freedom.

It was not struggling to breathe through a single air-hole, it was not the throbbing injury to my hand, nor was it my cramped, aching body, it was keeping completely quiet for twenty-seven hours which was the toughest challenge on my journey.

I was alone – no friends, no family, nothing.
Trapped, upside down, the blood rushed to my head and my eyes stung. Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours, and hours felt like days, as I journeyed to my freedom.
