A common question I got asked when I was competing, was how did I make such progress in my physique? The answer is simple. Patience and enjoying the journey. It took me years, training consistently, with the right diet. Every day, every week, every month, every year.
Some people don't understand how hard a decision it was to have this shoulder replacement after over 35 years of training. The surgeon said he would not do it if I was going to return to training after as one side of it is plastic and it will wear out quicker.
The past year I've had to work around the pain of my shoulders and try and do some kind of work out with very limited weight on my upper body. (chest no more that 13kg) The month before my op I couldn't do upper body at all as it got so bad. So look after your shoulders. Remember you're a bodybuilder not a powerlifter, so you don't need to lift too heavy. In my later years I trained with this saying in mind from Lee Haney "Stimulate not annihilate". If the exercise hurts in anyway, don't do it. The pain in my shoulder, started in 1994 from benching to much weight, 135kg for 4 reps. That's when I first had to see a specialist, and it was on and off for years. They gave me cortisone injections that did help but the problem is they mask the pain and so you think all is good but you're in fact making it worse. When I finished competing in 2006, the pain got worse and the doctor said after x rays, I had osteo arthritis and had to stop training. I did for a few months but it made me depressed, so I started training again but dropped shoulders and I was able to train all these years right up to a year and a half ago. When the pain was continuous, my cartilage disappeared and it was bone on bone and had to have shoulder replacement. Which meant I have to stop training with weights, so I was really confused what to do as I could still train with but very limited with light weights. But the other problem was sleep, I was waking up every night in pain and it was hard for me to get back to sleep. So after a year of this, I thought I can't carry on like this. And trust me that's a big loss for me. Npa Britain 2006. After a 3 year layoff after winning the British in 2003 (which took me 7 years to win it) and coming second at the world's. I came back with the goal to win the World championships but as i was preparing for it and i was in shape i went to defend my title. Trust me when i say going back was a scary process, i was more confident. And i wanted this to be my last year and i didn't want to lose this title. I wanted to leave the stage at champion.
Finally, I must have waited 6 months for this leg extension, leg curl and preacher curl attachment. All set now for P'ting. 👌
