Over the past few years, I’ve had a couple of mentors. One one-to-one, another an online group mentor.

Something they are both strong advocates for is the importance of stopping, taking a breath at this time of year and looking at what you have achieved in your business and where you want to be in a year’s time.

Sometimes we get so bogged down in the day to day that we don’t see the distance we have travelled.

We need to congratulate ourselves when we do achieve something, no matter how insignificant it may seem, because it is an accumulation of each of those small things that make the momentous moments happen.

But without a plan, we are often inclined to drift. We know what we need to do. We know what we ought to do, but actually doing them doesn’t always become a reality. They remain on our to do list and life passes by…

On the 2nd November at 11:45 I am going to be carrying out a “plan to grow your tutoring business in 2022” workshop on zoom. It is open to anyone, but the places will be limited.
If you want to join me, I’d love to meet you there. Just drop me a line and I will send you the link.

Stories are powerful and a great way to help you to grow your tutoring business. They help you to explain who you are, how you do things and why. This helps to build empathy and recognition of your passion.

The Clara James Tutor's Group 01/10/2021

The Clara James Tutor's Group

I've worked with many tutors over the past 9+ years and I've learned that the most important factor is your ability to share the information that you have. I know this sounds like common sense, yet it is a lack of confidence in qualifications that holds many people back. Don't let it hold you back.
If you are thinking of becoming a tutor why not join the Clara James Tutors Group and we will support you on your journey

The Clara James Tutor's Group I am so excited to tell you about this. (Normally my emotions are relatively insipid, but this is something I am incredibly excited about.

As a parent what would I expect from a tutor for my own children? That was the question that we used to start the business 9 years ago, and every time someone new comes under the Clara James Brand, I ask the same question. Would I be happy for you to tutor my children? If the answer is no, the process goes no further. That's why I can recommend every single tutor here at Clara James with complete confidence.
What bar do you set for your tutoring business?

I hope the school term is off to a good start.
If you have any problems, please do ask. Whether it's a quick question about their maths or English, or the more permanent support of a tutor, we can help.
I have some amazing tutors who work for me and I can recommend each and everyone of them with confidence. I always think, would I be happy with this person supporting my own child?
If we can be of any help at all, please do ask.

Imagine a person gets in touch about tutoring.

You have a chat but at the moment you don’t have the capacity to help, or they are looking for someone cheaper, who has a better knowledge of / more experience, etc.

There is a reason why you they decide not to be tutored by you.
What do you do? Accept the fact that you win some, you lose some.

Or follow up?

I suggest you leave it a few days and follow up. Even if they say they have found someone else. Just check it has worked out and offer to be there if they ever have any questions.

Ideally you would keep in regular contact so that your details are always to hand (I don’t mean spam people. I send a weekly email to parents offering hints and tips on how they can support their children at home), so if they ever need a tutor, your details are top of mind. They have had an opportunity to get to “know you”, like you and trust you.

I wrote this blog a while ago, so it doesn't take into account that so many children are looking for additional help because of the disruption caused to their education over the past few months.
I have tweaked it in parts, but I think my reasons for loving tutoring hasn't really changed that much over the past 9 years.
If you are thinking of becoming a tutor, it could change your life. It could be one of the best things you have ever done.
And this is why I think so:

The Clara James Tutor's Group 09/09/2021

The Clara James Tutor's Group

I’ve been preparing the resources for the first month’s, bundle of the Tutor’s Group. It will be based around clarifying your “who”.

Very often when we decide we want to tutor. In our mind, we decide we want to tutor secondary school maths (for example) because of the lifelong passion for circle theorems... We have conversations with people telling them how we are now a maths tutor.

Someone gets talking to you about tutoring, because they are looking for a tutor for their son. Full of enthusiasm you tell them all about what you charge, where the lessons take place, your availability. Then after a while the conversation moves on and you realise that this person is looking for support for their 5-year-old son who is on the Autistic Spectrum and needs to go back to the very beginning of their understanding.

You have the knowledge to help, but none of the relevant resources. It would take time and money to create them.

What do you do?

The group goes live on Sunday. I have mentioned previously that as a thank you for getting in touch about tutoring, the franchise, or the brand associate opportunity, I would give you a founding member’s price of just £9.95.

Why am I introducing the membership group?

I have 3 main reasons.

1) To be relevant to more people
2) Many people who have got in touch about starting a franchise don’t want to tutor maths or English. But they need help. This is one way that I can offer that help whilst still growing the Clara James Brand.
3) The Brand Associate and the Franchise are both big, life changing commitments. I’m hoping that the membership group will offer people the opportunity to get to know me better. In doing so, they will hopefully feel that they would like to take the leap and become a Brand Associate or Franchisee. Or, that the idea of working with me and my values would be torture and they were lucky to get out whilst the going was still good! (I hope this isn’t the case, but…)

I was asked recently what the point is in paying for a mentor. With most things in life, if we are looking to learn something new, we get help. Yet when it comes to starting a business, most people jump straight in and hope. Wait and see what happens. Yet starting a business could change your life, so why not get help and the support of someone who has relevant experience to guide you along your journey.

I look at my life and realise how lucky I am in so many respects. I run a business I love. The people I meet are amazing. The appreciation you receive gives you a sense of pride, achievement, accomplishment.
Tutoring isn’t for everyone, but if you are considering it. It could change your life and that of all the people you work with.

Sometimes in life, things just seem to click into place. Recently I've spoken to several people about starting or growing their tutoring business.
They've spoken about how it would be helpful to be around others who are facing similar challenges or motivated to achieve similar goals.
A training I recently watched spoke how if a membership group was available where each month, one key piece of information/ training to support people in reaching their (tutoring) goals. How helpful that would be to people.
A book I'm reading spoke about, if you have an idea try it. Don't spend months sitting on the fence thinking about it. Even if it only helps one person, surely that in itself if a success?
So, consequently on the 12th September I will be opening the the Clara James Tutor's Group. A membership for tutors where you can speak and learn from other like minded individuals. A new piece of training each month and a monthly Q&A/ co-working call.
For those who sign up before the 12th, the group will be just £9.75/ month for as long as you remain a member. Those who join us after that date, the price will be £17/month, for as long as you remain a member.
I'd love to know what you think. If you want to join us either message me or watch this space and a sign up form will be available soon.

I sat on the floor outside the cloakroom and said I’d got a choice of games with me. There was a pairs game, this would need cutting up if she was happy to do that for me. I passed this under the door for her to look at.
A snakes and ladders game. I passed this under the door.
A board game, this went under. And so on…
I explained that she could choose and once she had chosen to come out and let me know.

Who is Clara James?

Clara James Tutoring was, until recently known as Starr Tutoring.

A business which had gone from being one person who had a dedication not to fail and the naive belief that all tutors offered tailor made lessons that would be fun and boost confidence, to a business that is now set to become the number 1 tutoring company in the UK.

Back in 2012, Dawn Strachan started Starr Tutoring. She chose the name because it had a good ring to it and her maiden name was Starr, so it seemed a logical choice.

When Clara, her oldest daughter started school, she seemed destined to do well. She was doing everything she was supposed to do and was keen to learn. However, although the presentation of her work was brilliant: lots of colours and images, it got harder to ignore the fact that her spelling was awful.
