The new ‘Clara James Tutor’s Group’ goes live today!

Each month a new training bundle will be added to help you achieve your goal of starting an incredible tutoring company.

In January we will start at the beginning and consider who it is your want to tutor. This sounds like the sort of thing you can answer with a flippant two second response. But, there is obviously a huge difference between someone supporting a primary aged child and a GCSE student maths.

The syllabus is different, the depth of knowledge is different, the presentation will be different.

And that’s just 1 subject, 1 example.

Membership is free for the first 3 months, then after that it will be the very affordable price of just £15.97 with £2.97 of that going to a charity I will be eternally grateful to.

Why not pop across and join us.

There’s nothing to lose and maybe this first small step is the step you need to take to make your dream for 2023 a reality!

Do you remember a teacher from school for all the wrong reasons?

So many people who get in touch comment on how last year their child thrived with a certain teacher, but this year with a different teacher...

I can remember when I was in primary school I had a teacher, who when talking to me seemed to love the catch phrase: you're not as clever as your brother, are you?

As an adult I can acknowledge that not many people are. But at the time that hurt. A lot.

Working 1-to-1 with a child you can really get to know them. We can work on their strengths and build on those. We can find any gaps and help them to fill them. We can become a learning peer, we can make it fun and relevant.

If you want to be remembered for all the right reasons and make a genuine difference to a child's confidence, maybe starting your own tutoring business is the path for you?

Back then when the business was much smaller, a family asked me to help them to find a tutor to support their child I didn’t have the time to fit them in as they lived about an hour away from here. I went onto a national platform to help them search. Nearly every profile I looked at took the form:

Hi, I am…
I have a degree in… from…
And I have … years’ experience.

None of them said how they could support the child. It sounds harsh but when someone gets in touch for a tutor,
they don’t really care about you that much,
they care about how you can support their child/ them.
So, when you write your profile think about how you can stand out. Why they will relate to you over the many other people out their promoting their tutoring profiles.
Why you, why not me?

I’m putting a course together to help you to write a profile that will help you to stand out. To help you to create a profile that explains who you are AND how you can help them.

I will be able to create a free link for the course for the first 48 hours. If you would like access to it, please do let me know by messaging me, and I will let you know when the link goes live.
So, this has stuck with me for many years now that is how most tutors just don’t stand out.

Have a great week and warm wishes

Over Christmas I've been updating the Franchisee operations manual as so much has changed since we went into lockdown.

When I first wrote the manual in 2019, every single one of our lessons took place in the child's home. It was something I felt strongly about. If the lessons took place where the child felt comfortable it would put them in a better frame of mind to learn. To recall the information when needed.

Then lockdown happened and everything changed. Obviously lessons could no longer take place in the child's home as we were no longer allowed to leave home apart from our daily exercise, as a key worker, and maybe one or two other reasons.

But the company was able to change. From that change we have grown and I hope improved.

We are now able to offer a two tier service - online lessons or in the home of the child.

The manual needs changing to acknowledge this.

Once completed and everything else is in place, I will be applying to register with the British Franchise Association to show that we are a reputable company that strives to do the best by those we work with and support.

2023 is going to be a big year for us. If you want it to be a big year for you too and you want to start your very own tutoring business, we can help.

6 years ago today, Angel and I set off to spend New Year in Finland. It has to be said that it is one of the most beautiful places imaginable.
She was revising for her A' levels, I was preparing resources and planning for the year ahead. It was one of the most amazing holidays ever. As we welcomed the new year in, we watched the Northern Lights over a frozen lake, there were fireworks and Chinese lanterns. It was beautiful.

Happy Christmas from everyone at Clara James Tutoring!

24/12/2022

I wanted the opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with Clara James this year.
The tutors who work with me are truly phenomenal, I can ask them to support someone and know that in doing so the reputation of the company will only go from strength to strength.
I work with some amazing families. A huge thank you to everyone who continues to put their faith in us, week after week. Month after month, and very often year after year.
Then everyone behind the scenes: Angela who helps with payroll, Katie who helps to phrase my social media posts for me and Matthew, Aditi and Annabel who help to create the GCSE revision sheets for me.

Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year x

I've just started working with a really sweet lad. I've been 3 times now and he's brilliant. He's still in Reception and he's got limited speech and ASD. Yet his communication skills are brilliant. There is no mistaking what he wants. His mum had asked us to work on phonics, so yesterday I took a long some colouring tasks based around the letter A.
His goal was completely different to mine. We established the green apple but from there on I think he felt his work was done so his drive was to look at numbers and colours. Each time I pointed out the next object starting with 'a' he would take my hand and say "no, green circle" (or whatever other colour he wanted us to use).
I would then quickly colour the object starting with A, chatting about how it starts with A, whilst he chose the next colour.
I've learned in life; success doesn't always come with being the one in charge.
He's a real lad and I know I'm going to enjoy working with him.

Enjoy your day and speak soon x

Christmas is coming and then the new year

"Summer is gone, Winter is near, Christmas is coming and then the New Year".
That was the first, and just about only, tune I ever learned to play on the piano. Yet 40ish years later I can still remember it.
It was played with one finger, on 1 note. Simple, but memberable.

What simple but memorable thing do you want to do in 2023 to help you to achieve your dreams?
Maybe you want to become a tutor or start your own tutoring business. If so, we are here to promise to do our very best to help x

Is 2023 the year you're going to start a tutoring business?

This could be a great place to start: Read on

14 days to make your dream of becoming a tutor a reality!

How amazing would it be if you were guided through the initial steps needed to make your dream real?

Sometimes before we get started on something we envisage how hard it's going to be. The mountain we are going to have to climb to achieve our dream. But it doesn't need to be like that. By breaking that mountain into small manageable steps we can reach the summit together.

Imagine being guided around the pitfalls so you didn't make the mistakes that stop so many from getting started!

I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but without having to navigate your way through the minefield singlehandedly it will be a whole lot easier than trying to do it yourself. Take someone with you who has a road map, who can guide you from their own previous experiences and success.

How amazing would it be if you knew that in just 14 days you could have started the journey to your new life?

14 days, 2 weeks or less than a month. Phrase it as you wish, but in a very short space of time that dream you have been putting off could be your springboard for 2023. Your new reality. Your business. Your success!

If you dream of starting a tutoring business in 2023, let me introduce the "14 days to start your tutoring business" challenge:

Each morning we will start with a brief Facebook live where I will set you a small challenge for the day. Something that you can implement that will get you on the road to success. It will guide you, focus you, motivate you.

Then share what you have achieved in the Facebook group and inspire others.

There are going to be some amazing prizes for those who get involved, but I will tell you more about that at the time.

2023 is the year that you can make great things happen.

Small, steady. consistent steps are what you need and this challenge will get you on your voyage to success, to living your dreams.

It's FREE, so what do you have to lose?

Interested? Click on the link below and together, let's make 2023 the year you achieve your goal of starting your own tutoring business x

Since starting the business, it has always proven to be the little things that can make a huge difference.

It has been the implementation of these small subtle differences that have made such a huge difference. Sometimes it can be something like taking your shoes off at the door, but very often it relates to their pets.

For most people their pet is an integral part of their family. So, acknowledge them as such. A blinds & curtains company I used to know of would find out in advance if the family had a dog. If they did, when they first arrived, they would give the dog a 'nice to meet you treat' and write a letter to the family dog after to establish whether their family had been happy with the service they received. Quirky, but fantastic, I think.

But on a more serious level, it can also be things like shutting the gate. It seems insignificant, but it can be hugely important.

Snow, our old dog used to like to lie with the front door open so that she could watch the world go by. That or in the garden when it got warm enough for her (she liked her comforts).

One time I returned from a lesson to find the gate open. A few minutes later the window cleaner returned to put his invoice through the letter box. I stated that the gate had been left open, could he make sure it was closed in future please.
He argued that it was closed now, and she hadn't gotten out, so it wasn't a problem.

Closing the gate would have taken 2 seconds, not dismissing it so flippantly, would have also been appreciated (He stood his ground in taking no responsibility for several more minutes). His attitude left me fuming for days. I'm still moaning about it, years later. When it's your action, you have to take responsibility, even it seems trivial to you. You're representing a business. He was his own boss; it was his own window cleaning business. Do I tell the world how amazing he was? No, quite the opposite.

To get the world to rave about you, consider the little things. Very often it is those seemingly insignificant details that can make all the difference in the eyes of those you are working for, and it is ultimately them who pay your wages.

Who is Clara James?

Clara James Tutoring was, until recently known as Starr Tutoring.

A business which had gone from being one person who had a dedication not to fail and the naive belief that all tutors offered tailor made lessons that would be fun and boost confidence, to a business that is now set to become the number 1 tutoring company in the UK.

Back in 2012, Dawn Strachan started Starr Tutoring. She chose the name because it had a good ring to it and her maiden name was Starr, so it seemed a logical choice.

When Clara, her oldest daughter started school, she seemed destined to do well. She was doing everything she was supposed to do and was keen to learn. However, although the presentation of her work was brilliant: lots of colours and images, it got harder to ignore the fact that her spelling was awful.
