From baby's first step to teenager's first drive, every milestone comes with its own dose of parental anxiety. This is the part of parenting that the baby books don’t teach you about!
But is it normal to suffer from anxiety when you become a parent?
Why do we feel anxious as our children reach particular milestones?
What is ‘normal’ anxiety and when should we worry that it has become something more?
The Family Health Podcast is back for a new series and we are kicking off with an unmissable chat about a topic that so many of you messaged us about.

We are asked our thoughts about suction devices like this every week in our first aid classes.
We understand that as parents or carers, you will do anything to protect and help your children and that choking is one of your top fears. If your baby or toddler is choking, you need to react and respond quickly to dislodge the obstruction.
Picture a scene where your child is choking on a piece of food. What do you think is the optimum way to deal with that situation in the moment? Is it to run off to your kitchen cupboard, find the suction device box, get it out of the box, fiddle with it to get it the right way up, take a look at the side of the box or instructions to remind yourself how to fit it and how it works….or is it to grab your child and immediately begin back blows?
Back blows, chest thrusts and abdominal thrusts are a proven immediate and effective first-line action you can take to get whatever is stuck in your child’s throat out. You may only have minutes or seconds to do this. Grab the child and get started.
The UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency recently relaxed restrictions on the sale of these devices in the UK but continues to recommend that users follow the established Basic Life Support protocols when managing a choking incident.
The most up-to-date advice from the Resuscitation Council UK states “There is insufficient evidence on the safety or effectiveness of these devices for us to recommend their use, and we are concerned that the use of these devices could delay established treatments for choking.”
Bear in mind that devices like this were originally designed for trained healthcare professionals working with adults before now being sold to the mass market, and also be wary of counterfeit and fake devices on online shopping sites that do not comply with regulations!
You may decide that you would like to keep a device like this at home for peace of mind, which is absolutely your choice.
We urge you to learn basic baby & child first aid techniques for manually dealing with a choking incident so you can react first and have the device as a backup if needed 💚

We cannot recommend WASuP wipes enough for sting and bite relief 🐝
This clever little product gives instant soothing relief; popping the pod releases a bamboo wipe soaked in organic apple cider vinegar, you simply unroll and apply to the sting to give relief in seconds.
It's small enough to pop in your pocket and you get 4 little pods in each pack.
Stock up now, pop one in your first aid kit to take out and about on those summer walks when you are surrounded by nettles and wasps!

Today we share Brody’s story, kindly told with permission from his Mum, Natasha. Just last week Brody developed sepsis from a chickenpox infection and almost lost his life.
This story thankfully has a happy ending for Brody and his family but it’s a reminder to trust your parental instincts and always ask "Could it be sepsis?"
Here is what happened in Natasha’s words:
Up until this week, I thought having the •chicken pox• wasn’t that bad - a few days of itchiness, a bit of a temperature and all will be well. w r o n g 🚩
This week has been the most scared I’ve felt in a long long time and sitting here now typing this out it’s only just hit me how close we were to losing our baby.
Brody got chicken pox on Saturday, all was ‘fine’ until he took a serious dip. His temperature spiked at 41.5 and his breathing was rapid. After numerous phone calls to the GP + NHS111 we were told it was ‘just a bad case of chicken pox’ and ‘it’s normal’
A few days passed and he was only getting worse. He was hardly waking. I took him into the hospital, handed over my lifeless baby and begged them to take me seriously, to help us.
After a few hours Brody was being treated for sepsis. His ‘bad case of chicken pox’ attacked his body and made its way into his blood stream.
I dread to think what would have happened if I listened to the numerous health professionals telling me I was over-reacting and he was ‘fine’.
Chicken pox isn’t something mild and fun. It isn’t something to wish your child to contract, it isn’t something to hold parties over. We were one of the very lucky ones, and I thank the stars above but can people p l e a s e start taking chicken pox seriously!!
It can and does kill.”
💚 Thank you Natasha for sharing Brody’s story as a warning to parents to be vigilant with infections like chicken pox. Brody spent almost a week in hospital but thankfully responded to treatment and is doing well now.
Please persevere with medics if you feel your child is deteriorating or if something just isn’t right and take a look at the resources at Sepsis Trust for more info on the signs and symptoms of sepsis.

⚠️ A SILENT SOLUTION ⚠️
Have you ever considered how you might successfully call for emergency support when you can’t speak or it is not safe to speak? For example: you are the casualty who is choking or experiencing a heart attack. Intruders could be in your home or you want to alert the emergency services without raising suspicions of someone you’re fearful of.
When calling 999/112 for emergency help on a mobile phone, press 55 when prompted to do so. This alerts the call response handlers to the fact you can’t speak - but do need emergency help. Further action may be required to confirm an emergency response is genuinely needed. These further actions include whispering, coughing or tapping the phone.
Pressing ‘55’ does not allow the emergency services to track your location.
Many people believe that simply by calling 999 - especially from a mobile phone - police support will automatically be sent. It won’t.
This system helps the emergency call handlers filter any accidental or hoax 999 calls.
Many people still don’t know about this life-saving service.
