Atherton Community School

📢 Update 📢

A number of parents have contacted us about the list of schools that was published according to the Progress 8 score and the subsequent conversations in open and closed groups that have taken place.
We would like to thank you for all your supportive comments and for taking the time to understand that Progress 8 score is not the only measure of a school, particularly when the score is based on a cohort of less than 100 students. New Ofsted criteria identify the issue of small cohorts of students taking GCSEs (year groups with less than 100 students) and the impact that this can have. More emphasis is placed on year on year progress as well as other measures.
For those parents who have concerns or opinions we invite you to visit our school and talk to us. Atherton Community School is a school where almost 400 students attend. Every one of these students is part of our community. They represent what an amazing community we have as well as the bright future Atherton has due to the talents and gifts held within each and every one of them.
Behind the headline figures there are untold success stories and achievements that we as a community should celebrate. The student who overcame a number of disabilities to secure 8 GCSEs at 2 grades higher than their targets, the student who transferred to ACS due to being bullied and would not attend school yet became the most compelling public speaker with higher than 95% attendance and good GCSE results that enabled them to enter further education. The students who arrived in Y7 with lower than national average KS2 results but through their dedication and determination not only were accepted into colleges that required a minimum of 44 points but who are now excelling in these tough courses. These are only a few examples of our students who we are so very proud of.
Amongst our students we have future engineers who will work on solutions to worldwide issues using technology that has not even been developed yet, nurses and doctors who will care for us in our old age, scientists who will be part of research teams that develop cures for diseases, designers, veterinarians, physiotherapists, musicians, dancers, artists and much, much more. They will be citizens in a rapidly changing world where we will rely on them to solve problems created by previous generations.
We continue to encourage anyone to visit the school, talk to our students, parents and staff, look at the inspiring environment and see learning taking place. All comments about ACS are welcome because everyone belonging to ACS thrives from the support from families and the community, and any negativity only makes us more resilient and determined. Our students, families and staff support one another to allow the potential, gifts and talents that are within each one of our young people to shine through. We are defined not by one Progress 8 score from a cohort of 50 students, but by the individual success stories belonging to our young people.
