[08/12/21]   Summer 2021 Grades

Mossley Hollins High School is pleased to report some outstanding achievements by its students in their GCSEs and other qualifications this summer.

Many of our students, through their hardwork, commitment and resilience achieved the highest grades in a range of subjects and they can be rightly proud of their achievements. Special mention should go to Ewan MacDonald who scored an exceptional 8 Grade 9s and 3 Grade 8s, Hannah Collier also hit top grades with 8 Grade 9s and 3 Grade 8s, Amber Price-Butterworth achieved an exceptional 9 Grade 9s, 1 Grade 8s and a Grade 7. Equally impressive was Jake Newton who scored an impressive 7 Grade 9s, 3 Grade 8s and a Distinction*.
Many students made exceptional progress in the five years with us at Mossley Hollins High School with many achieving outcomes well in excess of what would be expected of similar pupils nationally. Alexander Cutler achieved grade 9 in both English Literature and in History in addition to grade 7s in English Language, Spanish and science. Yogesh Patel also made exceptional progress achieving grade 9 in maths, further maths, statistics and biology in addition to grade 8 in 7 other subjects. Kristina Kacurova achieved grade 7 in a number of subjects including English Language, English Literature and science, whilst Marine Dote achieved grade 9 in both Japanese and Spanish, grade 8 in English Literature and Geography in addition to achieving grade 7 in 7 other subjects
This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards. The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic.

It has been an incredibly difficult year for our students, their families and our staff. We are immensely proud of all the hardwork and achievements of our students. Our teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and study, and we look forward to celebrating further successes in their future achievements.

On behalf of the staff and governors I would like to congratulate all of our students on their achievements and wish them will in the next stage of their education and/or training.

IT might not quite be a remake of Ewan McGregor’s “Brassed Off” but Tameside Cultural Services have produced their own “movie” tribute to brass music.

In a unique and exciting collaboration, the council team has brought together members of eight of the borough’s bands for a video celebrating brass music and tradition, and their survival after two years without concerts and the highly popular Whit Friday contests.

The stirring film, which has been produced with the help of Tameside Music Service and Tameside Brass Band Association, shows the 30 musicians playing in the borough’s green spaces and parks. They appear against a sound track of JA Greenwood’s rousing march “True and Trusty”. It will be made available online on Whit Friday (May 28).

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member with responsibility for culture, said: “I have often said brass bands and their music form part of Tameside’s soul. By producing this video we are showing our support for that long tradition.

“For many of the participants – all of whom told us how much they enjoyed the experience – it was the first time they had worn their uniform for more than a year.

“Hopefully, our video will spread the word that even after 14 months of lockdowns and restrictions brass music is alive and well, and encourage more people to take an interest ahead of 2022 when the Tameside Whit Friday contests, the greatest free show on earth, will be back.”

The participating bands were Ashton-under-Lyne Brass Band; Hattersley Brass Band; The Incredible Plastic Street Band; Mossley Band; Mossley Hollins School Band; St John’s Band (Mossley); Stalybridge Community Band and Stalybridge Old Band.

Covid restrictions were observed at all times during the production of the video. The only people not socially distancing were from the same household or bubble.

[05/13/21]   Face Masks in Educational Settings from Monday 17th May 2021:

New guidance has been issued by the Department of Education (DFE) regarding the use of face masks in educational settings. Based on the current state of the pandemic and the positive progress being made, this additional precautionary measure is no longer recommended. This updated guidance is in line with Step 3 of the government’s roadmap and has followed a review of the latest data on infection and vaccination rates.

Therefore, from Monday 17th May, face masks will no longer be required for students in classrooms or communal areas in schools. Students will still have the option to wear a face mask if they feel they need to. The government continue to recommend that face coverings should be worn by staff and visitors in situations outside of classrooms where social distancing is not possible (for example, when moving around in corridors and communal areas).

The reintroduction of face masks for students may be advised for a temporary period in response to particular localised outbreaks, including variants of concern. Immediate outbreak response (at the level of individual schools or a cluster of schools) remains for local Directors of Public Health to advice on. Please note, face masks will still be required, as they are now, in other public areas, such as in shops and on public transport.

Wearing a face mask during the school day has been one of many sacrifices students have made over the last year in our fight against the pandemic and I know they will welcome this latest step towards a return to normal school life. I would like to thank our students for the mature way in which they have adapted to all the necessary restrictions over the last 12 months.
