Today as part of an English lesson on reading comprehension, we went on a plant and flowers hunt to see if we could spot any we had been reading about. This ended up turning into an insects, bugs and bird hunt as well as the added perk of spotting some lovely ducklings! 😊

THE HIRING CHAIN performed by STING | World Down Syndrome Day 2021 25/03/2021

THE HIRING CHAIN performed by STING | World Down Syndrome Day 2021

We have marked World Down Syndrome Day this week by looking at the opportunities for inclusive workplaces. We love this song from Sting, his message is something all of us at Buzz are hugely passionate about!

We act as a broker between young, disabled people looking for work experience – ‘interns’ - and employers who are able to facilitate this, and this is a free service.

Almost 20% of working age people in the UK are disabled or have a long-term health condition, and many young people in this group find it very difficult to get into work.

Buzz’s interns are keen to enter the world of work, and we’re looking for employers who can offer meaningful work experience to help get them get on the career ladder. The work experience placements we’re looking for range from 2 to 4 days per week, and last from 2 to 24 weeks.

The benefits to you, the employer, are many:
1. It’s free!
The service is funded by public monies so there are no financial costs to the employer. Very little time is required from you or your staff in terms of supervising the intern as Buzz provides a Job Coach to ensure the intern does a good job and stays on task.

2. It brings positive and far-reaching results
The Equality and Human Rights Commission summarises benefits to employers: “Promoting inclusive working can help to increase productivity, improve motivation and retention, and provide an inclusive and adaptable service to customers and clients… The benefits can spread much further than the walls of your organisation. Many people spend more waking hours at work than at home. Getting relationships right in the workplace is a way to start getting those relationships right in the wider community.”

3. It can enhance and simplify your recruitment processes
Giving an intern the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in your workplace provides you with the opportunity to assess their suitability for any future job vacancies within your business.

If you feel able to offer work experience to our interns or you’d like more information, please get in touch via Facebook or with our Employability and Job coach, Amy Rattcliff ([email protected]). It’s good business sense

Our Supported Internship learners were taking part in independent travel training on Wednesday. They planned a route, identified risks they expected while out in the community, and demonstrated excellent communication skills while ordering their own food and drinks in Greggs. Some of our learners popped into Asda to look at Mother’s day cards and treats 😊 and practised using the self service checkouts.

Today our learners have been supporting the fourth annual Purple Light Up to celebrate disability inclusion and to mark the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
#PurpleLightUp is a global movement that celebrates and draws attention to the economic contribution of the 386 million disabled employees around the world.
While the 3rd December is about celebrating disabled employees, today has presented an opportunity for learners and staff at Buzz to demonstrate our commitment to creating a better working world for all employees.
Our learners and staff have created purple arts and crafts in celebration of #PurpleLightUp and to highlight to the world the importance of disability inclusion across all sectors and industries

Congratulations to Buzz’s staff and school learners for achieving ‘Good’ at the recent Ofsted inspection! Inspectors said: “Buzz Learning provides a personalised and nurturing alternative for pupils who have found mainstream education difficult… The staff provide a well-organised and predictable school day that suits its pupils well... Although small, the school provides a broad curriculum. Teachers deliver lively lessons that re-engage the pupils.” Read the report here:
