hello mate...r ur washingtonias kept outside year round?
I ordered an Aeonium plant from this nursery, received it on the 27th of May in this sorry state. Have written numerous emails, some phone calls with no body answering the phone. Haven't had any response from them. Very bad service, would not recommend to anyone. My worst experience in buying plants online.
Hello,
We bought 2 large bamboos and a very large/tall Indian bean tree.
We planted all 3 immediately we got them home (in the back of our pick-up truck, hanging out loads). And we've looked after all 3, watering ect.
The Indian bean tree has no sign of leaves yet, is this normal considering the weather we've had?
Neither of the bamboos have new shoots yet, is this also normal because of the lousy weather?
Just a bit worried they are all dead, but hopefully just sleeping.
I’ve been trying to contact you.....
Phone not working says messages are full......email keep bouncing back 😩
Can you give me some info please?
I need to buy some plants and everything online seems to be out of stock?
Can I come along and choose some and would you be able to deliver? My Gardner needs them from wk by 30/5....
Or is it better to come and take them away ourselves?
Please can you answer as soon as poss..
Many thanks
Hi. Roughly how big is the 1-2ltr cycas revolta palm please?
Do you sell red berried rowan trees?
Could you tell me please if your tearoom will be opening this week. Thank you.
Wow!! What an amazing place.... Beautiful BIG plants... such helpful and knowledgeable people! No room for more plants...... 4 large specimens later.... I’m like a kiddy in a sweetie shop. Won’t be long before another visit!
My Ficinia "Ice crystal'" many leaves have gone brown what should I do?
Hello, I want a bamboo plant about 4-5ft high that can be grown in a pot. It will be used to screen a bench area on our garden, so needs foliage from bottom to top. It will be in a part windy area. Any help/recommendations would be appreciated.
Tracy Merritt Thank you very much Bruce for the help, advice and the plants you selected for us. Great to see you and here is our evolving oasis

New Delivery at Big Plant Nursery

Busy start to the month, with some mature palms arriving. Brahea, Chamaerops, Jubaea and Washingtonia for starters!

13/08/2021

So this year may not have been the sunniest but at least the plants have enjoyed the rain, here is a quick video of our summer 'Jungle beds' Happy gardening, come and see for yourself if you can!

Photos from Big Plant Nursery ltd's post 12/05/2021

So today the nursery is bursting at the seams, plants everywhere and slightly chaotic if I’m honest. At last the frosts seem to have past, I’ve just planted up the first ‘jungle bed’ with Ensete, cannas and musa, solanum, Ricinus to name a few. Thought I’d share a pic of a plant flowering you can be thankful you can’t small, Sauromatum venosum ‘Indian Giant’ wonderful aroma of rotting flesh and worse! Happy gardening everyone.
Oh before I go, Big Plant are hiring, we need a full time delivery driver covering all over the place!
And help on the nursery, general nursery assistant, ideally both would be passionate about plants and great team players. If you are interested or know anyone please pass this on or contact the nursery directly for more information.

Happy Easter greetings fellow plant hunters, yes I know we’ve been quiet this ‘spring’. Really it’s been so busy at Big Plant we’ve been nervous to shout about anything, covid, lockdown and of course brexit has created the perfect storm with everyone becoming a passionate gardener, wonderful stuff!
So busy in fact we had to close down online sales to help us catch up. Not bad problems to have I know but challenging all the same.
I just thought I’d let you all know, we are full of plants and have masses on the way and will shortly be updating the website and continuing online sales.
In the meantime here is a collection of photos taken today of plants for sale on under production here.
Stay safe and watch out for late frosts!
Oh, tea room will be open soon for ourdoor seating and takeaways.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone, really hope you are all safe and cosy and 2021 brings better things.
Maybe we can help a little with our Winter sale starting tonight until the end of January, 20%off all plants! And we are stocked just like spring so some real bargains to be had.

https://mailchi.mp/09d0de745865/christmas-sale-7873862

Here’s a few photos too in today’s sunshine, just a taster of Big Plant in the Winter.

Photos from Big Plant Nursery ltd's post 15/12/2020

It’s Spring! ...well almost, deliveries are coming in thick and fast to beat the brexit chaos. Today it’s the turn of Cordylines amongst other things. Later this week is palms, more agaves and citrus plus a few rarities for good measure. We’ll keep adding to our website as fast as possible. In the meantime please visit if you are able or contact us if there is anything you need or think we might have.

Photos from Big Plant Nursery ltd's post 02/12/2020

It may be chilly outside but the plants keep coming. These lovely agaves and chunky cacti have just arrived and are on display in our newly organised ‘back’ glasshouse.......probably more agaves here than anywhere other than a trip to Mexico!

Big Plant Nursery Christmas opening times

Good Morning everyone, from today, 22nd of November we are open 7 days a week leading up to Christmas. We are full of exciting plants some perfect for gifts in addition to our fabulous vouchers. Plants are still arriving from our European cousins and lots of home grown offerings too and dare I say it a great selection of superb Christmas trees also.

09/11/2020

So I've kinda got carried away with winter protection this year, think it's too much time looking at hardy exotic plant forums, and have made some significant structures. One is a roof for my arid and agave bed which I recommend everyone to do, protecting them for our excessive wet winters we seem to have these days. The other is for a collection of Hedychiums and tender perennials to keep the worst of the frost off. If this is a bit much, to make things really easy we researched fleece jacket frost protection and are pleased to announce a new range of German made products are now in stock in a good range of sizes. https://www.bigplantnursery.co.uk/shop/sundries/plant-jacket/

05/11/2020

To clarify, Inline with latest lockdown advice.
Big Plant Nursery will be open to the public Wednesday to Saturday every week 9-5 each day. Social distancing and face masks please.
Good news is we have huge range of plants, lots of arid plants in our newly opened ‘back glasshouse’ and a cool range of interesting and rare succulents, indoors plants ever increasing. Even some gift ideas and dare I say it Christmas trees, yes I know it’s still November but I think they will be in short supply this year so.....

Hardy exotic planting at Big Plant Nursery

Is it bye bye for now..well for some of the exotics, maybe not Big Plant, we will follow government guidelines and remain open on our reduced hours of Wednesday to Saturday opening in this new period of lockdown. We will be featuring more exciting plants in particular more unusual plants suitable for indoor cultivation over the coming gloomy months. Keep an eye on the website and of course visit if you can. For now here is a slightly sad look at some of the summer superstars, perhaps coming to the end of their summer splendour.

Colocasia leaf in the rain

Mercury ! falling today but the Colocasia are holding up well. We’ve escaped the recent frosts here at Big Plant so despite the rain plants are thriving.

22/09/2020

So Today I had a look in our ginger growing house, always nice at this time of year. Our young plants for sale online are looking great but one stands out, Hedychium chrysoleucum flowering well just 70cm high on plants propagated this year. Sprays of white petals with contrasting orange stamens accompanied by a strong sweet fragrance. Top plant!

Just have to share this, view outside my office in deepest West Sussex. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to things but this bed was only planted end of May this year! Can almost hear the plants growing.

14/09/2020

If you love tree ferns take a look at this Cyathea felina. Rarely available and supremely beautiful we have some specimens available most around 160-190cm tall for £89.50. Collect from nursery please or pallet if you are desperate!

Just thought I’d share some information about palms we are growing here in West Sussex. These are all good size plants, 15 litre to 110 litre, very high quality. Some ready now others for spring 2021. 28/08/2020

Finally we have received some more Dicksonia, be quick if you would like one. It’ll be the last until next spring.
And another reminder we will be open tomorrow, Saturday as usual. Closed Sunday but open this coming bank holiday Monday.
Look forward to seeing you.#treefern #dicksonia #treefernsUK #junglegarden #exoticgardens

26/08/2020

Most of you know we have revised opening these days, Wednesday to Saturday but due to requests we will be open this coming bank holiday Monday, 10-4pm. So if you can pop in, nursery is looking fabulous, lots of new plants out for sale many home grown. What you won’t probably know is that during lockdown we acquired another nursery purely as a growing site and have really stepped up our game growing so much more. If you look around Big Plant you will also see lots of plants in grey pots. This is an exciting new move to use recycled materials that means these pots can be placed in your domestic recycling. Good news for the planet.
Anyway enough seriousness, we’ve seriously gone bananas this year, here’s Musa basjoo and sikkimensis flowering together. Banana karma folks.

Cyathea australis, Alsophila australis - Big Plant Nursery

Today is a good day for ferns, let’s be positive it’s been so dry and our gardens will benefit despite the wind and rain being annoying for all of us working outdoors. So to celebrate I thought I’d show you our batch of Cyathea australis, the hard to find Rough Tree Fern. Our 2 litre plants are now ready for sale at a very reasonable £24.50. One of my favourite fast growing tree ferns tolerant of more sun than Dicksonia and almost as hardy.
https://www.bigplantnursery.co.uk/shop/plants/ferns-and-tree-ferns/cyatheaaustralis/

Oh and if any of you have a nice photo of a mature plant we could you on our web page I’d really appreciate it, especially if it’s from one of the plants we sold a few years back.

bigplantnursery.co.uk Cyathea australis, also known Alsophila australis and commonly known as the Rough Tree Fern in its native of south eastern Australia. Naturally it is found in varied habitats often growing often amongst Dicksonia antarctica on wooded hill and mountain sides in some places as high as 1200 metres abov...

Another day, grey and windy. I thought I’d do a quick video of our recent jungle planting which we created this year. It’s been so encouraging to see the interest in this kind of planting which has become almost the norm with our customers. I guess it’s a cheering antidote during these troubled times of uncertainty. Enjoy your gardens everyone, let’s hope the wind dies down and the frosts stay away until 2021!

At last our ‘Blue Dragons’ are ready for sale!
If you like bamboo you will really love Fargesia papyrifera, with outrageously blue, yes the new canes or culms as we call them really are blue, no photoshop here. With upright habit and non invasive roots this bamboo is a real star. Still hard to get hold of we have been growing these plants for ages and are really pleased with the result, strong healthy home grown dragons ready for re-homing.

Giant bamboo in West Sussex

Had quiet a few questions about how big can you grow bamboo here in the U.K. Here is a quick view of my biggest bamboo, Phyllostachys vivax, a real monster. It takes a few years then suddenly one June huge new culms will appear. I have various forms of this bamboo but for me just plain vivax reigns supreme.

Was amazing on Saturday, so great to see so many happy, patient customers. Whilst unloading a exciting delivery of exotics today I discovered this fella.
I really hope you can help reunite him or her with the small person who I’m sure is sad.
If you can help please call us. 01903 891466

12/06/2020

In case you haven’t seen we are now open to visitors Thursday to Saturday, 9.30-5.00pm.
Things are a little different, more exotics, rare plants, grasses and cool stuff. We’ve made some display beds and generally gone back to our roots. Hope you like it, visit if you can.
Here’s a few pics. Thank you all for your wonderful support.

22/05/2020

Just to say to everyone thank you for your support throughout Covid 19. I know you are all hoping we are open for browsing but unfortunately I have taken the difficult decision to remain closed to visitors for the time being. We are still working hard to improve the nursery and plants we grow, figuring a safe environment for all. Please bear with us, we have great plans and ideas for the future. In the meantime don’t hesitate to call the nursery, Monday to Friday or email anytime. We are delivering nationwide and are here weekdays for local collections.
Here are a few shots I’ve just taken wandering around, lots of lovely plants growing happily.
Once again thank you for your patience.
