The largest stretch of water within the M25. Any and all windsurfers welcome for personal kit or rental! Queen Mary is one of the largest inland place to windsurf near London.
Whatever the wind is doing in the area QM, situated high above the surrounding landscape, will deliver a wind strength 1-2 forces higher. On a windy day it is typical to see advanced windsurfers blasting, jumping, looping and going for big moves whilst beginners and intermediates are progressing on flatter parts of the water. With a pond-size of 700 acres, 1-mile plus reaches are there for the taking.
Operating as usual
Not long now Windsurfers...
We are delighted with the announcement by the Prime Minister, a 'crocus of hope' that we may finally be exiting current restrictions. The roadmap indicates outdoor sports will restart on Monday 29th March - So we will reopen the Club for your sailing and windsurfing that very same day!
Not just for Sailors. Who wants to be in the best shape before we can hit the water again?
Pilates for Sailors
Free class Saturday 20th 9-10am
I grew up learning to sail and spent my free time at my local sailing club, making the most of their youth activities. I went on to become a Dinghy instructor and have taught at a number of fantastic RYA centres both inland and on the coast over the past seven years.
Once I started teaching Pilates I could see the massive potential for using the exercise method to support sailors to make the most out of their time on the water! I am particularly interested in using Pilates to help dinghy sailors improve strength, balance and flexibility to maximise hiking ability and get you all moving around your boats and ducking under the boom with ease!
As we begin to see the potential end of the current lockdown and the reopening of sailing clubs and boat yards, NOW is the perfect time to get training so you are ready to leap back on the water at the first opportunity!
Must be in the UK
Must be over 18

Queen Mary Sailing Club
Water Closed 2.0
Following the statement by the Prime Minister on Saturday 31st October and subsequent guidance from the RYA on Wednesday 4th November, we have closed the water and Sailing Club. The Government announced that the whole of England will enter a period of lockdown restrictions for 28 days, starting on Thursday 5th November ending Wednesday 2nd December.
The COVID-19 preventative measures are vital to protecting health and well-being and to minimising pressure on front-line services. We all have a role to play by following the Government guidelines.
The club grounds will be open for members to check their boats are tied down and to secure windsurfing boards in cages: Today, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th November (10am to 3pm). It will be possible for members to visit after Saturday for essential maintenance and checks, please email the club at [email protected].
Please bear with us as we respond to these changes. The club website home page will have the most up to date information.
We wish you and your families continued good health and look forward to seeing you sailing or windsurfing, when we rise again at Queen Mary.
(Picture taken this morning - closed for fog!)
The Queen Mary Team are taking part in Movember and we would like your help! Not only are we going to be growing some Moustaches, we are going to get moving too. We are entering the colder and darker winter months and it can be hard to stay active, especially with the most recent release of a new UK ‘Lockdown’.
Our Mental Health in the UK is more fragile than ever, so it is vital that we stay active. Our challenge is to try and complete a “Transatlantic Crossing” of 3368 Miles!
The plan is for EVERYONE – QM members, their families, their friends – to record their OUTDOOR activity, this can be Cycling, Walking, Running, Roller Blading... Whatever tickles your fancy and your distance will be added to the total. IF we can stay open (guidance pending) we will include watersports in this too!!
If you want to help us reach our goal then please download the Trac4good app and record your progress there!! If you logged any distance on the water today the please add it to our total!
If you would like to donate then please do so via our group page on the Movember website or follow the link on the app.
The Movember charity does great work helping Mens’ Health and any donation you can make – even £1 will make a huge difference!
Visit our Movember page here;

Still time to book your place on Simon's windsurf clinic in sunny and windy Prasonisi next week!
Simon Winkley’s September Windsurfing trip to windy Rhodes is on...
I hope that you are getting on well despite the interruptions to things this year. My overseas clinics in 2020 to Costa Teguise, Lanzarote and Alaçati, Turkey did not run for obvious reasons. However I am pleased to announce a relatively last-minute clinic to windy Rhodes. I am really positive about this trip and about travelling responsibly to get people out on the water doing what they love to do. It has not been an easy year so maybe a trip like this is just the thing to restore the balance.
Prasonisi is situated on the southern end of the island of Rhodes in the windy corner of Greece. Well off the tourist trail, this is a rural area where a few shops and several small tavernas complete the village scene. The Meltemi wind is accelerated as it gets squeezed between the mountain and the small island offshore to offer excellent conditions for freeriding on the sheltered side of the spit where the clinic will take place. The wind here is cross-off from the right and has flat water and chop. There is also a cross-onshore beach slightly upwind with small waves.
With loads of JP and Neil Pryde kit from a professional centre we will be working on all core skills from getting going to controlling top speed, tacks, gybes, waterstarts, a whole range of carving options and maybe a bit of jumping.
There is limited nightlife so we won’t be tempted into anything more than a couple of hours of responsible socialising with smiles, tales of great heroics, good food and cold beers in the evening!
This is a great deal to include flights, transfers, kit hire for 7 days, accommodation, half-board and a place on the 5-day clinic. Solo travellers will, of course, have to take single occupancy as we cannot currently buddy people up in a twin room. Couples or friends in a bubble who are happy to share a twin room may, of course, do so.
Prasonisi is a beautiful location with a reliable reputation as a windsurfing spot and I hope that some of you will be able to join me there in September for a memorable week!

Queen Mary Sailing Club
Return to sailing on Saturday 23rd May
I am delighted to advise you all that following HMG’s announced step 1 release from lockdown, in England, together with cautious confirmation and detailed guidance from the RYA, we plan to partially re-open Queen Mary Sailing Club on Saturday 23rd May and the Bank Holiday Weekend. Going forward in phase 1 the club will be open 3 days a week and under continuous review with Governments guidance.
Having completed phase zero of our re-opening plan over the coming days, our club will then operate in line with phase 1 of our 5 x phased re-opening plan – please see chart on our previous facebook post. All the following dates are dependent on our experiences and Government confidence with a stable infection rate lower than R1.0. There will be strict limitations in place for the following few weeks in phase 1, before moving to phase 2, as we constantly assess club operations for our members, volunteers and our staff safety:
Phase 1 – starting Saturday 23rd May
> Club open 3 days per week 09:00 to 17:00
> Sailing & lake access will be confined to ‘casual sailing & windsurfing’ only.
> Strict social distancing will be in force: You may sail alone / You may sail with members of your own household./ You can meet up with one other person from another household, but must stay 2 meters apart at all times.
> The QMSC Clubhouse will provide toilet facilities only. The club house will remain closed for all other facilities (no upper deck access, changing facilities and no café).
> There will be limits on the numbers of Sailors allowed each day, details on booking system to follow.
> More guidance will be published on the club website next week, please check the website before making your visit.
We are all keen to get back on the water! Sailors must only sail in the conditions that they are comfortable with, reducing risks to our staff on water safety, also following signage & procedures. Health & Safety regarding Covid-19 protection will be overriding everything we do as a club, further please visit the club website for up to date information before making your visit.
This all sounds rather sombre and that is because it actually is very serious. Covid-19 has proved many times over to be a potentially fatal infection, the risk of which needs to be treated with the maximum caution.
We are all very excited to be starting sailing again at Queen Mary Sailing Club, so soon after the end of lockdown. As HMG says ‘Stay Alert, Control the Virus, Save Lives’ is now coming sharply into focus.
Great sailing ahead - we look forward to seeing you on the water at Queen Mary soon..

Techno Worlds, Cadiz 2019
Four of our young windsurfers headed to Club Nautico, Puerto Sherry, for the Worlds over half term. Elektra Day-San and Ashi Himsworth competed in the Silver Fleet Youth Girls, Will Ziegler in the Silver Fleet Junior Boys and Millie Searle in the Junior Girls.
Overall, Elektra came 74th and Ashi 79th out of 85 in the Youth Girls and Will came 62nd out of 85 overall, with one podium place – 3rd in Race 6. Well done to all of them, competing in such a large international competition.
Millie, competing in a field of 58, came in the top 10 in 7 of the 10 races, with two podium places – 3rd in Race 2 and 1st in Race 9. She placed 8th overall and the top-placed British Under 15 Girl, which is a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of her – all that practice up at Queen Mary is clearly paying dividends!
We’re in for a windy one today and Saturday! Who’s coming for a play?!
QM are proud that two of our youth windsurfers are currently part of the 14 strong GB team competing at the Techno 293 European Windsurfing Championships at Michmoret in Israel.
Elektra Day-San (15) and Millie Searle (14) are both graduates of QM training , QM Team 15 with Therese and Paul, and are current members of RYA London and South East Zone Squad, and national squads. They also recently qualified as Assistant Instructors at QM.
It is early days on the racing but they certainly appear to be having a blast!
Below are some photos of the event for you all to see how much fun it looks to be!
On top of this; our Team 15 Club the "Queen Mary Skimmers" came 3rd overall in the regional inter-club championships on Saturday!!! amazing news for our Youth windsurfers all round!
Elektra and Millie have both benefitted hugely from the RYA training schemes for young windsurfers, starting with Team 15 at QM and Zone Squad. Elektra in particular has gone from beginner to international racer in under 3 years. If you have a young U16 windsurfer who fancies going the same route please get in contact with Ben our chief windsurfing instructor at *[email protected]* for more info.
QM Team sending all the best to Millie and Elektra in their last few days of racing, and also to the rest of the GB squad out in Israel!
Special thanks to Howie for the photos and info!
