Well done to everyone getting their exam results today.

No matter what grades you got, you made it through the last two years. Some of the most difficult months in all our lives, when you didn't get to experience 'normal' school, or exams or social lives. You got through it, so well done to everyone!

Take a deep breath, and pat yourself on the back for getting this far. Don't panic about next steps or if things didn't go 100% the way you planned. You'll get to where you're meant to be, maybe not the way you imagined, but you'll get there.

Digital Well Being Tip 4

A healthy sleep space

A good night’s sleep is one of our most important weapons against stress, anxiety and depression. The blue light effect and over-stimulation of apps, games and even TV programs or films immediately before bedtime can have a massive effect on the quality of our sleep, so banning electronic devices (including TV) from the bedroom is a great habit to get into.

You should aim for all screens off an hour before the time you/your child aims to go to sleep to ensure they can get to sleep easier and have better quality sleep. Try to develop a bedtime routine which promotes a calmer mind. That could mean reading a book, taking the dog for a walk, or playing a board game with the whole family, whatever works for you and your family.

Digital Wellbeing Tip #3

Unconscious obsession?

Often we don’t even realise how much we use our mobile devices, having them within reach and checking them constantly has become second nature. Use the well-being tools built into most phones to keep an eye on just how many times a day your children use their devices and how much time is spent on different apps. They might be surprised just how much they use their device over the course of a day or week. Becoming aware of overuse is the first step in correcting it. These tools are usually available in the settings menu.

In addition to monitoring our habits, lots of devices also have tools to help us curb bad habits. Both Apple and Android devices have ways to schedule downtime or ‘do not disturb’ modes, and you can even schedule times when your device will go into ‘wind down’ mode which changes the vibrant colours on your phone to greyscale. This is much less stimulating and attractive to our brain, and encourages us to get off our device quicker, while still allowing the device to be used if necessary.

[02/03/21]   Digital Wellbeing Tip 2

Information Overload

We are constantly bombarded with news and information every day. Our older children and teens see and hear so much about Covid, exams, schools opening and closing etc. through their news feed and social media, while even our very young children can overhear conversations and news programmes and they probably take in more than we think. Sometimes, we don’t even realise that this constant stream of information is making our young people feel anxious or overwhelmed.

Be conscious of what younger children are hearing. If you think they’re anxious about something, encourage them to talk about it. You don’t have to have all the answers to their worries, but just opening up can allow them to process their feelings in a healthier way. Be aware of your own conversations too - you might be totally stressed by home schooling, but it won’t help your child to cope if they hear you constantly complaining about it.

Sit down with older children and help them to shut down notifications from the news feed on devices and stay off social media for a while. Reaching for our phone is often the first thing any of us do in the morning, so help them to break the habit – starting the day by checking social media and the headlines before anything else can raise stress levels from early in the morning. Try to introduce healthier habits by not allowing anyone access to devices before a scheduled time, ideally after a decent breakfast. For those of us who can’t break the social media or news habit completely, allow 10 minutes to check in and then turn them off again while you focus on what needs to be achieved that day. Build in time for these check ins a few times a day so they don’t feel completely cut off from their peers.

Digital Wellbeing Tip 1
Do one thing at a time. Just because we can multi-task doesn’t mean we should.
If your children need to concentrate on a task for school, turn off notifications for social media, messages and email. Only allow them to have the device they are using nearby.
When we get distracted, the original task takes much longer, as our brain takes some time to get refocussed back on our original task after getting interrupted. This can lead children to feeling like they’re not achieving as much as they should and getting anxious.

This week is Children's Mental Health Week.

It's been a tough year for our young people, with the usual supports of school, sport and social groups being removed. Add in the amount of time our children are on-screen for home schooling and entertainment, it can all take a massive toll on their well-being.

Each day this week, we'll be posting a digital well-being tip, some simple and easy habits to develop to ensure our young people reduce their risk in the digital world.

Increasing data allowances on mobile devices to support disadvantaged children - Get help with technology - GOV.UK

As our young people are once again at home, the below scheme might be of assistance to some families in NI if broadband is an issue

Happy New Year to all.

It's not the start to the new year we were all hoping for, but I have no doubt that our amazing teachers and schools in Ireland, North and South will continue to do their best to provide access education for our children and young people in what is a really stressful time for parents, children and education professionals.

We have adapted many of our workshops and training programmes to be delivered virtually, so if your staff need a little bit of help in getting online, or improving what they've been doing so far, give us a call. We offer training on Google Classroom and SeeSaw, as well as several supplementary apps and programmes that can be incorporated into online learning plans to keep students engaged.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2020 - National Suicide Prevention Alliance

World Suicide Prevention Day

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. In 2018 there were more than 6800 suicides in the UK & Ireland, with suicide being the biggest killer of men under 50. It is estimated that one in every 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year and yet poor mental health is still something people feel ashamed of and believe they are on their own with.

Use this international awareness day as an opportunity to talk to your loved ones about mental health issues. There is no shame in needing help with a mental health issue, but it can be difficult to reach out, so make sure your loved ones know they can come to you.
