AMJ Chemistry Tuition

A-level and GCSE Chemistry Tuition - taking place on Zoom or Whereby, I have a first class honours degree in chemistry from Imperial College (University of London), and an MSc & a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Manchester.

I have experience of working in the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. I love chemistry! Since the start of Lockdown, lessons on Zoom and Whereby have been really good - far better than I had thought possible. I am still able to share all of my resources - most importantly relevant exam questions. Sam (2019-2021)

Last week I received this fabulous fused glass Thank You gift from an A-level pupil. It's Caffeine! This was the substance that I was given as an unknown substance to identify in the chemistry lab when I was a first year undergraduate! Thank you Cathy’s Fused Glass

[03/03/21]   I received this unsolicited message from the mum of one of my A-level students last week:

"You are a massive positive in my daughter's life! It's like you are the wind beneath her wings Alison - it really is - she's like a different person because of you - her confidence has increased no end. You have helped her so much and you're making the impossible possible. We are so grateful to you. My daughter tells us that you are the best teacher she's ever had and that you're really nice as well."

Wow! I love tutoring!

[02/19/21]   Lessons on Zoom and Whereby are going far better than I could have hoped for.
I am still able to share all of my resources - most importantly relevant exam questions.
And I am really enjoying teaching GCSE Chemistry too!
Lessons with more than one student have always worked very well in the past (healthy competition is a really good thing!). I am very happy to do on-line sessions with a small group.

Atoms and molecules are too small to keep track of individually – so the counting unit of chemistry is the Mole.

The mole is related to the mass of an element in the following way: one mole of carbon-12 atoms has 602,252,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms and a mass of 12 grams.

Today, I discovered that there is an unofficial holiday - 'Mole Day' celebrated on October 23rd, between 6:02 a.m. and 6:02 p.m.

I have put it in my calendar!πŸŽ‰πŸŽˆ

[01/13/21]   I received a couple of lovely messages last week about students who I have started to help with their chemistry:

"that was a massive success!!!!! she's buzzing, she's so happy!!!!"

"he was feeling stressed and overwhelmed earlier due the exams being cancelled and after talking to you he seems more balanced and calm"

I decided to have a go at making my own artwork. It was more fun than I thought it would be!

[06/12/19]   Two exams done - one to go!

My advice is to think through the first two exams and make a note of the topics that didn't come up. It may well be that these topics appear in paper three - and therefore you should allocate more time to revising these topics over the next few days. And of course, don't forget to revise all the practical work that you have done in the last two years.

I wish you all the very best. Thinking of you!

[03/25/19]   Just over 10 weeks to go until the first A level chemistry exam!

But there is still time to get to grips with some of the more difficult topics: buffers, electrochemical cells, acylation, NMR, triglycerides (AQA), reactions of halide ions with sulfuric acid (AQA), intermolecular forces..............
