Hello!

My husband Martyn Appleton-Smith and I will be running 20 miles on Saturday for the charity children with cancer. It’s a 20 mile obstacle race with over 200 obstacles.

Our son Harrison Appleton-Smith goes to Humpty Dumpty’s and we thought it would be nice to share with you all what we are doing and hopefully get some more donations towards our target.

We know a couple of children ourselves that has fought cancer and/or are still fighting cancer. So this charity is quite close to our hearts.

Every £1 you Donate... 82p goes into fighting cancer.

Every £100 that gets donated to cancer research only £3 goes to children cancer research.

Everyday more than 10 children are diagnosed with cancer!!! This statistic is pretty scary and no child deserves to suffer.

We are aiming to raise £500 with only 2 more sleeps to go we aren’t far off with only £170 to go!!

If you can donate anything we would be really grateful! Here’s our link it only takes a couple of seconds!

Just some of our outdoor play space ☀️🌳🌻

We hope everyone has had a lovely weekend!

Just thought we’d share a little behind-the-scenes video of just some of our outdoor play space.

From the mud kitchen, to the climbing frame, music station, water play and everything else in between,
we’re so very lucky to have such a great garden and the children really love to be outdoors - especially in lovely weather. ☀️

Do leave us a little like or comment if you can see the video! Thank you 🙂

[10/25/19]   Good afternoon everyone, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that came with us to Harrier Grange care home this morning to do some trick or treating. I think we can all agree that it was a huge success and enjoyed by our children and the residents of the care home. The children were extremely well behaved whilst we were there and I felt proud of every single one of them. We saw some lovely dressing up costumes too both on the visit and back at playschool, so thank you again for that. I will put some photos up of our visit after half term when we have sorted through them.

Hope you all have a lovely break and we will see you back at playschool week beginning 4th November.

Kind Regards

Sarah and the Humpty Dumpty team 😊

[10/01/19]   Dear All

As you are all aware I have left the post as manager of Humpty Dumpty Playschool. Sarah has taken on the position and is doing a great job so far.

I will be popping into playschool Thursday morning to spend a little time saying goodbye to the children and staff. This will be a very hard morning for me as I am sure you can understand. I will also be attending the AGM on Monday 7th at 530pm to read my final managers report of the academic year 2018/19.

Humpty Dumpty Playschool has been a major part of my life for the last 8 years and I can easily say it has been the most enjoyable experience.

I feel so blessed to have been part of such an incredible warm, caring, loving, safe, fun setting. To have worked with such delightful children and families has been such a joy, along with the outstanding staff who obtain so much knowledge and experience, dedication passion and drive has been a complete joy.

Thank you to each and every one of you for being part of such a wonderful Humpty Dumpty community and making a job so enjoyable and rewarding.

As I take on a new challange in my career it is reassuring to know that Humpty Dumpty Playschool will continue to make so many children, families, staff and other professionals happy.

I wish you all the very best.

Kimberley

Thank you for all of you that are sharing pictures and videos of you and your children having lots of fun with the BusyBags. If you have not yet had one, please do not worry you will get a turn soon.

Here we have lovely Imogen with her BusyBag activity, she enjoyed it so much that once the bag had to come back to playschool her mummy got their own resources and continued to develop her fine motor skills and created more fun learning games. Not Only is Imogen developing her fine motor but she is having to match colours, look at quantity. This is fantastic, thank you for sharing Imogen's mummy.

Headteachers at schools across Britain say children are being targeted by the creepy images of the disturbing character that appear in innocent videos of cartoons and computer games.

26/02/2019

Here is another picture of one of our little ones having fun doing some home learning.
The activity is cheap and simple with just some beads and pipe cleaners . This is an excellent activity for developing fine motor skills, hand eye co-ordination, finger grasp which will support children in writing.

****Home Learning idea*****
Here is one of our little people at home with their mummy. She has a bowl of water with letters and numbers in, a piece of paper with her name written on and her age. She has to find the matching letters and number from the bowl and put it in the correct place.
This is a very simply and easy activity and can be made easier or trickier depending on your child's skill level. It can also be made messier by having the letters in gloop of flour which is even more fun.
Thank you to mummy for letting us share this wonderful picture.

Petition: Increase early years funding in line with minimum pay rises

Please all sign this before all chip card settings close!!!
Please all sign because underpaid staff look after people's most precious individuals in fact most get paid less than jobs that do not require any training or qualifications!!!!!!
Please all sign because professional people look after our future and do not get enough money to make ends meet.
Thank you in advance

petition.parliament.uk The national minimum wage will increase again in April therefore the government needs to increase the childcare funding rates in line with these for settings to survive.

[10/31/18]   Books and Reading

The Early Years are critical to developing a lifelong love of reading. You can’t start your child too soon!!!!

• Read together every day.
Read to your child every day. Make this a warm and loving time when the two of you can cuddle close together. Bedtime is an especially great time for reading together.

• Give everything a name.
You can build comprehension skills early, even with the littlest child. Play games that involve naming or pointing to objects. Say things like, "Where's your nose?" and then, "Where's Mummy's nose?" Or touch your child's nose and say, "What's this?"
• Say how much you enjoy reading together.
Tell your child how much you enjoy reading with him or her. Look forward to this time you spend together. Talk about "story time" as the favourite part of your day.
• Read with fun in your voice.
Read to your child with humour and expression. Use different voices for different characters.
• Know when to stop.
If your child loses interest or has trouble paying attention, just put the book away for a while. Don't continue reading if your child is not enjoying it.
• Be interactive.
Engage your child so he or she will actively listen to a story. Discuss what's happening, point out things on the page, and answer your child's questions. Ask questions of your own and listen to your child's responses.
• Read it again and again and again.
Your child will probably want to hear a favourite story over and over. Go ahead and read the same book for the 100th time! Research suggests that repeated readings help children develop language skills.
• Talk about writing, too.
Draw your child's attention to the way writing works. When looking at a book together, point out how we read from left to right and how words are separated by spaces.

• Point out print everywhere.
Talk about the written words you see in the world around you and respond with interest to your child's questions about words. Ask him or her to find a new word every time you go on an outing.

Is your child developing age-appropriate reading skills?
The most important thing for you to remember is that “reading” is much more than sounding out words! While it may seem obvious to adults, reading is the result of many small skills that build one upon the other. Knowing what these emerging reading skills are and helping your child learning and practice these skills should be part of your daily routine. Review the following questions about early reading skills expected of 3- and 4-year-old children, and note how your child is doing in each area. Can my child:

o Make simple predictions and comments about a story being read?
o Repeat a simple story after hearing it?
o Hold and look at books right side up, turning the pages one at a time from front to back?
o Name the letters in his/her first name, and can recognise his/her first name in print?
o Say and point to at least 10 letters of the alphabet?
o Match a letter with the beginning sound of a word (such as the letter “B” with a picture of a banana)?
o Recognise words or signs he/she sees often?

Encouraging reading at home
Now that you understand some of the beginning reading skills your child should have, you can reinforce those skills and help them make further progress. It’s easy (and fun!) to practice early reading skills with your child throughout the day. Here are a few activities to try:

 Create a name card for your child, printing their first name in clear, colourful letters. Display the card in a special place, and teach them to recognise the letters and sounds that make up their name.
 Let your child play with — and name — alphabet magnets on the refrigerator door or a baking tray.
 Using familiar objects (or pictures of them), help your child match the names of the objects to their beginning letter sounds.
 Read aloud to your child every day. And be sure to pause along the way to talk about the pictures, characters and story.
 Have your child “read” their favourite books back to you. (Don’t worry about correcting mistakes — it’s OK to point out corrections, but the most important thing is to have fun!) They may even make up a new story just by using the pictures.
 Point out the cover, title, and author of a book. Explain to your child that these are part of every book, and talk about what each of those features tells the reader.
 Offer a variety of books and magazines, both fiction and non-fiction.
 Take your child to the public library or bookstore. Explore the children’s book section and let him choose books that interest him. Attend the storytelling hour at your local library to “bring books to life” for your child.
 Help your child learn to recognise letters, words and names on local street signs, shops, service vehicles, and license plates.

Our Story

Humpty Dumpty playschool is set in a rural location on the outskirts of Andover
We have been running for over 40 years since its opening in the early 1970's. During this time we have built up an outstanding reputation for the care, support and learning opportunities that we provide and offer to all the children and families who attend the pre-school.

We are very proud of our Ofsted grading of Outstanding.

Our building is on MoD land and therefore; we give children from Military families priority. However, we do accept children from Civil Service families as well as Civilian families from the local community, so please do make contact if you have an interest in your children attending our playschool.

Humpty Dumpty Playschool is a registered charity no.106547 for the provision of play school facilities for the local Andover area, including the children of Army HQ Staff. The playschool is run by a management committee, the chair of which is currently Col W Common from Army HQ, all other committee members are parents of children at the playschool. Kimberley Norris is the Manager. We promote parental involvement in all aspects of the playschool.

We know that starting Playschool is not only a very important milestone in a child's life, but also they are your most precious possession. To ensure a positive start, you and your child will need the support and encouragement that Humpty Dumpty can provide. You will be reassured that your child is in the care of appropriately qualified and experienced staff. For your child, this could be the first time that they have been apart from you on a regular basis or have been in a large group. Either situation is perfectly normal. We realise that you are entrusting us with the care of your child and we place your child's safety, welfare and development at the top of our priorities
