U P D A T E 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦💙💙 🗓

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share this post to update you all on family life and my plans for the summer.

Baby Harry is now 11 weeks old! Where has that time gone? He arrived on the 9th April and we’ve been totally in love ever since. We are well and truly exhausted, but also loving every cuddle and smile with him too. My days are filled trying to keep the big boy Luke entertained, whilst also balancing time with Harry. I forgot how intense life is with a newborn! Add a 2 and a half your old to the mix and there’s a recipe for a seriously tired mammy.

Anyway, I am going to be opening availability up for my tutoring sessions for the summer holidays. Yay! These will be 1:1 teaching sessions where you can expect your child to have lots of active fun, use their creativity and most importantly, gain confidence in themselves.

💫When they learn with me, it will be a unique and exciting journey to gain knowledge, skills and a love of learning. Not forgetting lots of laughs too.

💫I will post more info on this over the coming weeks so watch out for the details coming soon.

💫If you’re interested, dm me today for more information and organise a free consultation.

Happy Monday
Laura x

💕🌟THANK YOU🌟

I’ve had a very quiet week on here and my presence has been pretty non-existent compared to the flurry and addiction of posting and promoting the business which I felt in the in the first few weeks of opening.

I’m days away now from welcoming our new arrival and have had to be really strong and say YES to REST before work - something I find really hard! So after my last tutoring sessions this past weekend, I’ve decided to sign off to spend some much needed time with my little family before it becomes a family of four 🥰.

I will still be taking enquiries, but please bear in mind they may take a little longer for me to respond to amongst the
mix of milk, nappies and naps 😳.

I have so many plans for tutoring sessions after my leave and can’t wait to begin sharing them with you all. Thanks to everyone who has supported the business so far I’m so grateful for all the kind words, recognition and support.

✨✨✨Well done to all my stars who have completed programmes of study with me. It’s been a pleasure working with all of your brilliant children ✨✨✨.

Now time to eat more of my child’s Easter eggs and put my feet up! 😜

🌈Outdoor Maths Games 🌈

Game 1- Multiple Sort! 💡

I’ve used multiples of the 4 and 8 x table here, but you could use any x table for this. It’s just a bit more exciting when you’re learning outside. I used wooden discs to write the multiples on so that they could be then sorted into separate groups. It’s a good way to begin recognising patterns in times tables and familiarising children with them. This tactile activity is just so much more engaging than sorting on a piece of paper with a pencil. Children could then pick a times table and show it in different ways using available resources. So they could make an array, draw an array or number line then have a go at the fact family.

Game 2- Target Multiples 🎯

Write your multiples on paper plates and hang them on the washing line! Practise jumping along the washing line chanting forwards and backwards, calling out times tables for children to jump up and splat the correct answer or even removing some plates and see if children can solve the missing numbers in the sequence. So many more opportunities for active outdoor maths fun!

Game 3- Multiple Splash 💦

Write your multiples on the wall for your chosen x table then shout out a x table question. Children grab their water pistol and sq**rt the correct answer. You could also use water balloons as a different alternative.

If you give any of these a try the don’t forget to send me your pics! Remember to LIKE, COMMENT and SAVE your favourite ideas.

“We booked into the 6 week session package with Laura for our 6 year old daughter Millie. Laura’s warm and enthusiastic personality shone through right from the start of our very first session and her energetic and encouraging approach to teaching put Millie at ease right away. Being an experienced teacher, Laura is familiar with up to date techniques of teaching that aligns to the current curriculum that us, as parents, were not aware of. Millie’s confidence has grown so much in a short space of time in a subject she previously struggled with and found daunting. The dedicated one on one time with Laura has really helped Millie progress to a strong level quickly. Laura’s approach to teaching is made fun and energetic. She tailored the sessions to Millie and provided a pack full of useful aids that helped her understand the process clearly. Laura also offered support to us as parents giving advice and access to resources to help Millie outside of the lessons. The relationship Laura built with Millie was wonderful to watch and we will look forward to continue Millie’s development with her going forward.”

🌈It fills me with such delight to get feedback like this. A lot of thought goes into my lessons to ensure progress is made, but most importantly children feel fully engaged and at ease with me. It means the world to know that all my planning, resources and teaching is recognised through the laughter, fun and excitement of my students.

🌈Can’t wait to get back to face to face teaching where the activities I plan will be even more exciting! Watch out for summer offers coming soon!

💡Making Maths Fun Online 💡

Concrete maths resources are an essential part of teaching maths in school at the moment, but it’s fair to say that we don’t all have boxes of base 10 or numicon knocking around our house. Since teaching online, I’ve had to be really creative in how I get visual and practical resources to my students. One way was to send them out in a mini learning pack which has been an essential part of the learning experience. I use a variety of sites to make my resource packs, some of which you can register as a parent. Really helpful when your child is working through their maths homework to just pull out and have on the table. I’d recommend @twinklparents to start off with.

Each pack is suited to your child so you’ll find there are different resources in everyone’s pack.

The other way was introducing online websites that use high quality pictorial representations of maths resources. Here are some free websites that are worth looking at when supporting your child at home.

My absolute fave! Loads of fun games to practise key learning skills. Really easy to use and accessible to all- not just teachers.

Recently discovered this and I love it! Loads of maths visual representations to use for both teaching and learning.

💡Toytheater.com
Another fab website with a vast array of visuals to help support your child’s learning. I haven’t played the games on this one yet though.

What’s your go to website for maths visuals? Does your child have a favourite?

💫🌟Progress Award🌟💫

Well done to my little super star Millie on completing her Shooting Stars Learning programme. This girl has amazed me with the rapid progress she has made in her maths learning over the past 6 weeks. Millie’s parents were concerned her confidence had dropped in maths and they weren’t sure what to do. That’s where I came in!

We’ve not just worked hard on maths strategies but we’ve also had so much fun along the way. I love playing games- especially when they are linked to maths-so Millie and I have had such a giggle trying to beat each other each week. What child doesn’t love beating the teacher?!

All of my little stars receive a special certificate on completion of their tutoring programme and one of my super positive affirmation cards. Millie will also have full access to video tutorials that match the learning we covered in sessions- just in case she needs to refresh her brain at anytime 💡🌟.

💫💡Teaching Multiplication💡💫

When teaching multiplication, it is best to start with developing a child’s understanding of equal groups and making arrays using equal groups in columns and rows. An array is a visual representation of multiplication and helps children understand times tables before going on to learn them by heart.

Children begin to understand the importance of the columns and rows being equal when representing and solving multiplication calculations.

Using a fun manipulative such as play dough makes the learning more kinaesthetic for children too. Some other concrete materials or resources that could be used for this activity are:

🌈paint
🌈cheerios
🌈any edible food that can be placed into columns and rows
🌈bingo dabbers
🌈buttons
🌈place value counters
🌈base ten
🌈bead strings (or homemade pasta strings if you don’t have access to bead strings)
🌈lego

Maybe you can think of some others yourself, but all will be sure to keep your child engaged and amused with these sensory and hands on resources.

After making arrays I would move to representing the array as a repeated addition number sentence before a multiplication number sentence.

Don’t forget to like and save if you want to give this a try with your child. Share your pics and tag me so I can see what you’ve been up to!

💐🌼Spring Time Nature Play 🌼💐

Valentines flowers looking a bit past it? Or have you received some beautiful Mother’s Day flowers this weekend? Well before you throw them away in a few weeks when they’ve dried up, think again! They are such a great tool for little ones and their sensory play. So, grab all those dried up petals and leaves and use them for some really fun spring time play. Brilliant for imprinting in your play dough or just adding to water. Throw in some spoons, pots, scoops and pans and you could make flower soup! You might even get a real cup of tea while your little one gets busy- bonus!

Here’s some ideas and opportunities for sensory flower play:

🌺Nature wands
🌺Nature paint brush
🌺Loose part play for play dough
🌺Nature wall hanging
🌺Colour sorting
🌺Flower printing
🌺Frozen flowers
🌺Watering and looking after plants

Check out my stories for pics of different flower activities. Remember to save posts if you like them or want to try them out yourself.

Thinking back to some lovely meetings I had last week with two amazing families. Here’s an email I received from a very thoughtful mammy after a parent/child consultation with me.

Just to give you the low down, I don’t just turn up on zoom and ask to help with homework once a week, nor do I expect to see progress from a child without getting to know them first. That’s why my approach is completely child centred. My mission is to build confidence and positivity in children alongside their academic skills. I pride myself on my strong relationships with parents and children alike- making the tutoring experience a fun and supportive journey for all involved. I care about your child’s wellbeing and helping them develop positive attitudes to areas of learning they may well feel nervous about at school.

If you’re looking for a teacher who tutors, who cares about your child’s emotional wellbeing as well as providing exciting and fun learning opportunities to help them progress- then I’m your lady! 🌟✨
