Thank you for a lovely evening wreath making, Mollie. All set for Christmas. Merry Christmas. πŸŽ„πŸ€ΆπŸŽ…
Hi there~Can you tell me anything about the history of Field Farm project? I have a postcard circa 1910 that was addressed to Field Farm. Here is a photo of the back so you can see the address. The handwriting isn't so great, but I'm very interested in your history. Can anyone help?

It's been a very blackberryish kind of a week. I was able to take 15 children picking on a local farm, the sun was warm on the backs of our necks, it smelt divine as the farmer was cutting paths through his wild meadow for his resident owls to use as hunting runs.
The children came home with pink fingers and smeared faces and some not all that full containers but very happy πŸ˜‚

On my way to my workshop yesterday, the morning mist was heavy and hanging in all the cobwebs. I couldn't resist another fabulous patch of fruit falling off the branches
Soggy feet but a full basket πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

So what did you do on the first day your kids were back in school? Well I launched myself into a muddy pond to trial harvest some rush and other plant materials on my doorstep.

It was an interesting experience.
I'd noticed the tell tale seed heads of the English rush over a hedge one day and gone to knock on the door. The gentleman was very obliging and happy for me to come back and harvest whatever I wanted from his over grown pond, including his stash of rush.
So I rocked up, drove across the field and lowered myself into the unknown muck of the pond.
Slowly breaking my way into the stand of rush, harvesting sedge and cats tail as I went.

I then became pond for about an hour.
Pond smell, pond sights and pond sounds filled my senses. I started to feel slightly more porous than I thought I should have been...

I could hear women parking up in the lane and taking their dogs for a walk, completely unaware there was another human lurking and rummaging in the undergrowth of the pond just feet away from them. It was pretty sureal.

But also pretty lovely to get that close and personal with the bounty of plant materials I happily squelched away with.
I felt privileged that my life let's me spend time in ponds. But hey, each to his own πŸ˜‰
I even found a fabulous stand of a variegated variety of rush which I have never seen before, much lighter green with stripes of paler green running the length of the stems.
Has anyone had experience of this variety before?

Love a commission mission. I was asked to make a lunch basket with compartments for various bottles, a stove and lunch boxes for @buryhook2017

Every time I open the door into my workshop is like a kick of happiness.
To have all my willow in one dry place, the bark and plant materials all together on shelves is still such a novelty. I feel privileged to manage to maintain this space in my life, it feels like home, it is peaceful (apart from the singing of my neighbour with his head phones on 🀣) it gives he head space to think and plan and create...
And it smells amazing, the willow, bark, rush and other plants πŸ‘ŒπŸΎπŸ‘ŒπŸΎ

It was quite a few days at the years @wildernessgathering. Finished this basket while I was there...Nick delivered a great master class in red cedar weaving which was well received and we all got muddy and steeped in wood smoke.

Great to see old faces, make new friends and be inspired by some pretty special people.
It was a pleasure to be neighbours with Nick of @quercusmagazine, we will not forget his arrival, resulting in the nickname 'The swearing tent' as he struggled to get his old school tent to do his bidding 🀣🀣

It was great to meet the talented and super fun @seanhellman who brings humour and ingenuity into life with his woodwork.

@seasonsofthewild who are deeply rooted in the rhythms of the earth show off their work with stunning photography on their Instagram page. Check em out...

Our boys were given fantastic experiences with the lovely Maria and Matthew from @wildwoodcraft who provided authentic primitive skills at an adult level. Lucky lucky children to learn from such talented people πŸ₯°

Lovely to finally meet Amanda @wyldwoodwillow who gave so many people a beautiful space to get lost in the willow weaving world...
Fab to catch up with @philbrookelongbows and his lovely family and was totally blown away by the work of @giles_newman. I didn't dream it was possible to make such exquisite and tiny sculptures from wood

And I got a new tool!! Customised for me by @dave_budd_handmade_tools. Yay for new tools and meeting the man who makes them. Marvellous πŸ‘ŒπŸΎ

Very special to meet and watch a demo of defleshing a hide with Theresa @traditional_leather so much energy and life in one human and a world of knowledge I didn't even start to scratch the surface of. Need to seek out this lady in the future 😊

Thank you to all the people who came by our stall, talked plant fibres and bark or took part in a workshop. You all added to a pretty awesome few days πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½
And big thanks to Roger and his crew @bison_bushcraft for organising the gathering despite the craziness of the last 2 years πŸ€›πŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸ½

Master class @wildernessgathering here we come. Do come and sign up at our stand if you are going to be there and you want to join us on Sunday.

I'll be pleased not to have to write 'basket' or 'cedar' for a while, labelling, yuck. But it's going to be great fun and really looking forward to showing our weaves and baskets to interested folks.

I have come across some of my most beautiful finds in the fields and woods of Windmill Farm where we used to run Field Farm Project. The bird life is so varied there and the landscape peaceful and wild compared to more arable farmlands.

I've found many buzzard feathers over the years but the two barn owl feathers are a bit of a magic find and oh so beautiful...

It has been a glorious day with Basingstoke Young Carers being held in the green forest, learning to make fires and shelters and leave all thoughts of responsibilities behind for the day.

I could make baskets like these forever...switching between plant materials and getting absorbed in each new layer of weave is addictive. Each new fibre holds a small world of unique texture, pliability, scent and range of subtle colours. Your fingers and mind adapt to each new set of properties and you get drawn in to that little micro world.

This basket has red cedar spokes, started with a simple cross weave base. The layers of fibre from the base up are: daffodil, elm bark, crocosmia, elm bark, pennisetum, bind w**d and red cedar roots.

DM with your purchase interests 😊

We are really looking forward to being @wildernessgathering this year where @fieldfarmproject and @mcmillenart will be displaying, demonstrating and talking about our weaves and bows and running a masterclass in cedar bark weaving.

If you are interested in the master class please contact us directly as there was no room left for us to be on the official list of masterclasses! It looks to be a busy and inspirational gathering this year...

Last time we were there we were in a fog of exhaustion with 6 month old babies so life has surely moved on...

I'm not sure making square baskets should be allowed in this heat πŸ₯΅ it felt like an endurance test like no other and trying to keep willow in good weaving condition is such a struggle.
But hey, working with natural materials is a balance between enjoyment of the work and the challenge to make the materials work for you.

So I tried to channel my inner Eddie @blithfieldwillowcrafts and get nice sharp corners for these matching shoe storage baskets. Grateful to have his excellent teaching in my mind, and repetition is definitely the name of the game. Your mind and hands making mental maps to aid you as you go, every mistake or imperfection reminds you not to do the same on the next one...every time you hit the sweet spot you aim to repeat it.

Hopefully it will be a little cooler as I embark the next two big square missions πŸ’ͺ🏼πŸ’ͺ🏼

We asked our goat willow to share some of its bounty today. The boys wanted some green wood to do some rune carving and I'd been eyeing up the abundance of clear stretches of bark since we moved in.
It felt a bit rude to cut the willow the first year we moved here, but it felt OK to take the stem after 2 years of quietly watching, waiting and asking.

Willow bark can be harvested for a much longer season that most other bark and I love the options you can achieve with chosing to scrape the outer bark off or leave it on. The smooth, creamy yellow underside or the rough greens, oranges and diamond patterns which remain visible once scraped. The diamond patterns (lenticels) are very distinctive on willow, a sure way to identify the tree from its bark.

It was lovely to be accompanied by my boys, their nimble fingers getting to grips with the knife work and peeling, and randomly enjoying licking the sap from the bark! Funny creatures

I look forward to weaving my respect and gratitude into some beautiful baskets
Thank you Mr Goat Willow 🐐🌿

Thank you to my husband for buying me beautiful mat black scissors, a Japanese pull saw and my own tape measure, all given with love so that I don't pinch his tools any more πŸ˜‰
Perfect timing for the flurry of square baskets being made this month.

A few of the completed jobs this week...a purposeful pod for my lovely friend @barnatnorthlodge where it will be put to use storing allanner of gloves and hats.
A handle replacement on a old frame basket, a bit nibbled by rodents but still a very useful old favorite of the owner.
A coffin in the making, and the storage of lots of rush. The mix of river smells now blend in with the lovely aroma of willow and the material stash gets ever bigger and more exciting!

Love these earthy tones of browns and creams. A new discovery to me for weaving is Virginia creeper. There is miles of it growing on the barns at Hurst Farm and it makes for super flexible and very long weavers, with the most beautiful spiral tendrils to adorn the basket.
Clematis, honey suckle, Virginia creeper and willow nestle together in this basket.

This beauty is a beast at 25" long and 10" wide! I was commissioned to copy a much loved and well used basket that had been bought from a maker at Petersfield Market over 40 years ago.
The original was slightly smaller but the owner wanted to be able to fit his seed trays in the new version.

I wonder if there is an equivalent saying to 'walking in another's footsteps' but in relation to following in the motions and creations of another's hands?

But those were my feelings as I made this basket. Although different from my usual methods, I used the original techniques of the maker to start each rod. It felt right to do this as a sign of respect and I think I will probably continue to do so in my future frame baskets.
