All of our 2021 results are in! I am proud of every single one of my amazing students.
This years' highlights include several GCSE students who only wanted to pass and ended up exceeding even their own expectations. As for my A Level students, I couldn't be more pleased and excited for you! One of you is heading off to the University of Central London next month and another to my old alma mater, University of Birmingham - both with A* in English! Over the moon!
Congratulations and good luck everyone :)

"Thank you for all your help over the years. I have really enjoyed our lessons."

Lovely gesture from an even lovelier student today! Saying goodbye to my A Level students is always a little sad, but I am so excited for her next big adventure at university.

At the risk of ruining a perfectly good joke - this is a great example of homonyms!

Homonyms are words that share the same spelling but have different meanings. Refuse and refuse - one is a verb, one is a noun. Hilarity ensues ;)

We have just concluded a Lady of Shalott-themed fortnight in Lemon and Grey Creative Writers' Club. Today I'm showing off the work of two sisters with very different ideas about what it would be like to live in Camelot!

At least they both agree the food is good ;)

Throwback...Friday?!

Yes, I'm wearing a Christmas hat...but the advice is still relevant as we revise for those final assessments over the weekend! ;)

I know what it's like to lose confidence in a subject. When I was this young man's age, I avoided maths under any circumstances! In class I just sat there, at home I cried. I think that's why some kids find it hard to put pen to paper - not because they don't have anything to say, but because they feel so anxious about it.

I started Creative Writers' Club as a place to focus on creativity, invention and exploring ideas for confident and not-so-confident writers alike! After a couple of months I'm delighted to have feedback like this.

If you are interested in finding out more about CWC sessions, join the group below or message me for a no-obligation chat :)

This week in Lemon and Grey Creative Writers' Club we are exploring monologues...

...hence I find myself on a Disney wiki reading about this guy on a Monday afternoon! ;)

Syndrome Syndrome (real nameBuddy Pine) is the main antagonist of the 2004 Disney/Pixar animated film The Incredibles. He originally wanted to be a superhero, but when his former idolMr. Incrediblecoldly rejected his offer, Syndrome went insane. To take revenge on Mr. Incredible, he became a supervillainand....

English Tip Tuesday: Revising themes in literature

Revising for literature can be tough! As tough as getting your video not to flip around when uploading to Facebook, apparently. Well, even though it's backwards, I'm sure you get the idea!

Here's my method to organise your revision of themes in any text:

STEP 1: Identify the text's themes and pick one of them to do first

STEP 2: Ask yourself: "how does (writer) present (theme) in (text)?"

STEP 3: Turn this into a statement: "In (text), (writer) presents (theme) as..." and finish the sentence in as many ways as you can!

STEP 4: Find evidence for each of your finished statements from within the text and create a mindmap

I hope this gives you something practical and useful to do beyond re-reading your texts in the runup to assessments :)

I just had to share some amazing work by Bee from our KS2 Creative Writers' club on Tuesday mornings.
Our word of the week was "protagonist", so we were inventing our own hero characters in class.
Bee took this brief to heart and came up with a hero for the modern day - Jane the refugee, whose motivation is to "find her sister and help other refugees find their families." Her strengths include "persistence" and "determination".
Fantastic work, Bee!

English Tip Tuesday: Monologues, soliloquies and asides

Do you know your subject terminology for studying drama? This week we are disambiguating (removing the uncertainty between) monologues, soliloquies and asides. Watch out for all three in your Shakespeare texts!

Daniel's first experience of haikus in today's Creative Writers' Club!

In addition to this, he created a hilarious composition about a video game in which babies deliver packages around town. As I learned, you can cue some classic baby behaviour using different key combinations. I just have to include it here too!

You drive yellow cars
You deliver packages -
"F" and "space" to fart!

English Tip Tuesday: Using counter arguments

We are back on persuasive writing this week - a skill well worth learning for English Language and for life ;)

A few weeks back I showed you AFORESTERSCAP - my method of remembering persuasive techniques (check it out in the ETT playlist!).

This week I am going to explain how to properly use a counter argument without sounding wishy-washy or on-the-fence. I hope you find it useful!

Happy Half Term :)

As it turns out, this young man has a *very* creative mind and a love for all things fantastical and scary! Well done, Sarjan :)
