Inspiration to us all

Your in our thoughts x

Today we’re sharing the story of Mary Cross, a former foster carer, avid walker and grandparent of seven.

Last year Mary was diagnosed with MND, an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves. Here she tells us about her experiences and the support she receives from UHCW.

Mary said: “I was working in social care on a busy hospital ward when I noticed that my walking was slowing down and I had developed foot drop.

“I was getting shooting pains up my arms and started to experience muscle twitches.

“In June 2020, after having a brain scan, MRI’s and a nerve conduction test, I found out that I had Motor Neurone Disease and was given one to two years to live.

“From day one I knew that I could be self-pitying or I could live each day the best way I can.

“I try to see the blessings in every day because there are so many things to be grateful for. I’m thankful for my friends and family, the support I receive and the quality time that I get with my husband, Steve – we see each day we get together as a bonus.

Mary sees our respiratory team and neurology team every three months. They monitor her breathing and the progress of her condition respectively.

“For me the key has been effective communication. They liaise with each other and it comforts me that everyone knows what’s going on. If I’m kept informed it eases my fears.

“Both teams give me their time and are always there when I need them. It’s made our journey a lot easier knowing there’s advice at the end of the phone. I couldn’t wish for better care.

❌too far towards the middle of the road
