Operating as usual

[07/11/21]   Many apologies for being off grid for the last few days. A very sad death in the family restored in a last minute trip to the outer Hebrides.
As with all funerals, a marvellous time was had by all, just such a shame about the circumstances.
However, normal service is now resuming - all lessons resume tomorrow, as per our holidays timetable.
Many thanks for your patience
❤️❤️❤️

So sad to have lost one of my oldest pupils, her family has been in my life for well over a decade…
But I know that she’ll carry her music with her for her whole life, with the skills she needs to explore new music herself.

And that’s always been my aim, that my pupils will inevitably leave me - but will never leave their music.

Working outside today, it’s too nice not to.
Read a tweet earlier that basically said that all Scots know, deep down in their very souls, that you never get two warm days in a row, so you must treat all days like this like it’s the very last one you will see in a year.
I’m taking this to heart ❤️☀️❤️

New routines, new starts, new everything...

Things are changing again. Isn’t it odd? I just feel like that despite lockdown putting a stop to everything, there’s been so much movement and change.

And here we are again. Kids are back at school, a new routine has begun.

Changes are happening here as well, which has made more availability for lessons in the near future.
I currently have a small waiting list, which I’ll be able to take a look at soon, and equip you or your children with quality and fun piano lessons!

Want to join that list? Message me! It’s all over zoom for the time being, and zoom will continue to be an option in the future, so locality is now not essential. So what’s stopping you?
Not sure?
Join the list anyway, and when you are offered a time and day, THEN decide!

Honestly, there comes a time where you just have to say “why the heck not”.

Thoughts about schools reopening

Just like last time we began to reopen Scotland, I’m going to keep all lessons online, just till we see how numbers are affected.
As you all know, I teach from home, and all that added footfall through my house, and the three children that live in it, it just adds to a bigger risk of transmission. I don’t want to add to any risk to yourselves, to your families, or to mine.

I think July/August is probably a good time to look at it again, let’s see how it plays out!

I’ll have had my second jag by then, hopefully numbers will be down, and we won’t need to go back into any kind of strict lockdown... fingers crossed.

Some things will remain online! - our theory classes work well, our song writing workshops are good... all the little things to bring pupils together and socialise and learn during the last year.

It’s been a heck of a ride, let’s hang on in there till the storm passes! Miss you all ###

It’s 11.45pm, and I’m awake cos I’m still buzzing!

I’m so delighted to announce that the first of our zoom song writing workshops went really well! Our star workshop leader, Josie, got on fantastically with our talented kids, and we’re all incredibly excited to see where all this takes us!

It’s truly heartwarming to see our kids come together and interact and support each other, especially after such a hard year. Piano can be such a lonely instrument, it’s so good for learners pianists to come together and bond.

I’m so proud of each and every one of them for being brave enough to take this creative step!
Here’s to the next 9 weeks!

But for now, I’m going to go do this for a bit... 😴😴

[03/30/21]   Well, Hi!

I have only two spaces left in our kids Zoom Song Writing Workshop led by Josie (My Name Is Crow), an award winning pro song writer extraordinaire.
This is a 10 week workshop (an hour a week for 10 weeks), starting next week, suitable for ages 8-12.

Does your child want to do something new and creative with their musical talents? This is just the kind of fun environment they need!

STARTS ON THURSDAY 8th!! Time is a ticking!

Send me a message for details ###

[01/11/21]   Well, good afternoon!
Hope you’re all dealing with this home school nightmare better than I am!

Piano lessons and theory class continue tonight, hopefully giving you a wee rest from today. Watch out for your zoom invite at your usual time, go get the kettle on, and listen to your child take a break from school.
And if it’s your own lesson, use it as an escape from whatever your mind was taken up with today.

It’s called playing music for a reason. Let’s play ###

Well, today’s lockdown news wasn’t fun.

But...

2021 can still be fun! Sure, we’re stuck in the house again, but there’s loads of stuff to do!

The trend last lockdown was home making. This time, I reckon y’all need to take up an instrument! What could possibly go wrong? It’ll be fun, at your own pace, and a much needed escape from the Covid home school nightmare we’re all about to embark on.

We can still have fun. Send me a message, we’ll work something out x

[12/21/20]   Well, hi!
This is my last teaching week before I shut zoom off for Christmas on the 23rd...
It’s been a crazy year, so much good has happened, so much change, all under the Covid shadow.
My students and I have had to learn extra computer skills, and had to find ways of working together to make our lessons work... Granted, they picked all that up better than me, I’m not salty about it, I know where my skill set is!
I’ve been absolutely blown away by the resilience and determination of all who have continued with their lessons, and have massive respect for the influx of new pupils who decided that 2020 wasn’t challenging enough, and that they were going to start learning piano as well!
Zoom has enabled me to teach people further away than ever before, and has allowed me virtual space to create classes and workshops...2021 is going to be a challenge, Covid or not, as I begin to prepare new things for everyone.
I couldn’t have made this work without the parents of students, who are each and every one patient and understanding of the new tech challenges that keep tripping us up! When the WiFi falls down, when the device I zoom on falls off the stand, when I get constantly dropped on my face because pupils have knocked their phones over...

Thank you to all, and I hope you all have the best Christmas and New Year that you can possibly manage.
I’ll be back on the 11th, should all go according to plan, but I’ll be sending out an email closer to the time in case there need to be those back to school timetable changes that occasionally happen.

See you all in the new year!

(And for your amusement, I give you a game of “what shouldn’t be on the tree”)

[12/01/20]   My day every day:

I’ll just pop into muse score and do a quick thing

*clicks, double clicks, muse score starts, mouse score stops, muse score updates, laptop restarts, laptop freezes, laptop just finds a wee fault and deals with it, Janice uninstalls muse score, Janice panics that all her previous work has also been deleted, laptop freezes so she can’t find out just to add extra tension, laptop restarts, work is there, muse score isn’t, reinstalls muse score, laptop points and laughs, Janice opens muse score, musescore is opening . And opening . And opening. And is it that time already? Still opening. Janice makes coffee and hates everyone

🥺🤣☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️

[10/21/20]   Hi there!
As you know, I've been running fairly successful theory classes since mid lockdown, that have been just the best fun! It's been great for the kids to chat and learn and explore how music works. Recently we've delved into the magical world of chords, and have been exploring how to fit chords to melodies. This has caused us to fall into a rabbit hole of harmony, which has inspired me to organise something a little bit fun!
I'm very excited to tell you that I've asked some of my professional musician friends to come and give a series of workshops over zoom, the first of which will be song writing workshops! I'll be running these at two different levels, depending on class sizes.
An 8 week course, designed to give our pianists and singers a first step into writing their own songs, with each of them having created their own masterpiece at the end.
(In an ideal world, I'll be aiming to have them record their songs at a professional recording studio, but this will entirely depend on how heavily lockdown restricts us, so this part will have to be put on hold until further notice, and as such will be charged for separately.)
The cost of the course will be £70 per student for the 8 one hour sessions. Places will be limited, and current students will get priority, but non students are also welcome!
Dates will need to be confirmed at a later date, but it would be appreciated if you could register your interest now, to help me prepare.

It's my intention to create more workshops like these in the future, so my pupils can learn how to enjoy, create and play with music - like I keep saying, it's called playing for a good reason!

[10/13/20]   I know what you’re asking.
Did Janice’s business just go international?

Yes.
Yes, it did.

Thanks to the crazy world of online teaching, I’m now welcoming pupils from all over the planet.
All you need is a good Internet connection!
Distance isn’t stopping you more, so what is?
Get in touch!
🎶 🎼 🎵

[10/12/20]   A million new things are going to be starting in the next six months!
All will be revealed in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned (get it??!!) for details!
But here’s a teaser for my first offshoot...
COVID time is hard for kids, I think it’s about time we had some (online, social distanced and perfectly safe) fun, with a time and a place to socialise, play, learn and be guided by working and experienced musicians, song writers and composers...

Intrigued?
I should hope so!
Keep an eye on this page...😉

Today's office... If you really need to do work on a Sunday, why not go to the beach?

[08/20/20]   Evening!

I hope that you're all well, and that you're all coping with the return to school!

I'm intending on restarting beginner theory classes from Monday 24th August, at the new time of 6.30. I hope this will give everyone enough time to get in from school and attend.

Please, if this clashes with anything, do let me know, and I'll see if I can jiggle it about any to suit you all!

All the kids that have been involved in this have enjoyed it immensely, and I'm genuinely delighted!

Long may it continue!

All my love,

Janice

And there it is. My wall is down, destruction time is over. Time to build my studio. I can't quite believe that I've managed this myself, it's probably one of the biggest projects I've taken on. But it will be worth it, my students and children will love it, and i hope my friends will make regular use of it, and i know that here I'll have the space I need to make real all the crazy ideas that I've never had room for before.
