Make and excavate archaeological poo!

Come along to Aberdeen Maritime Museum for our family friendly events on Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 September and make & excavate a poo - warning things may get sticky!

For most people, the idea of finding old human poo is disgusting. And the idea of dissecting it and looking at it carefully through a microscope is even worse! But this is exactly what some archaeologists do. Poos are called ‘coprolites’ by archaeologists. Coprolites can include loads of evidence to help us understand what people ate in the past, and how they prepared their food.

Suitable for age 4-11yrs
Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are £2.50 +booking fee, click on the links below to purchase tickets.

"I am grateful to have been granted a YAPA award and excited about offering creative sessions for young people in Aberdeen. I am a painter and early years teacher and will be working with students transitioning into primary school.

"Making Together" will imaginatively engage them in various drawing and painting techniques through story, movement adventures and the playful use of materials.

It's great that there has already been a lot of support in finding the right fit for my project and for connecting with other award practitioners. I look forward to working with my partner organisation and am excited about exploring creative outcomes with the children in my group!" Ursula Mathers, Creative Freelance Practitioner Ursula Mathers

Mason and his dad Mike spent all last Wednesday afternoon working on a painting and here is the final art work. Mason loved the painting in the forest and layered so many paints that it was really wet when they took it home so we thought it would be nice to see how it turned out. A really nice bond between father and son! And the painting looks great! I think we might have a budding artist on our hands. Family Learning Aberdeen

So yesterday we finished off our Camp Geronimo Project with our second group of families who had a great time playing games, going in a bug hunt and making newt friends (pun intended), and then sitting around the campfire telling stories and making chocolate bananas, s’mores and marshmallows. It’s sad to come to an end but it’s has been a blast. So much for everyone to take away. Everyone has been amazing. I’ve witnessed families learning and playing together building their skills and confidence whilst having so much fun. It has been wonderful to be apart of. So thank you to everyone involved. Say hello to Rhys (Welsh for ardour), our new and left-handed Prince loving Projects Assistant. We’ve aged him considerably since his Mum took this photo but the eyes, hair and THAT winning smile remain pretty much exactly the same.

And speaking of southpaws, today is International Left-Handers Day which makes Rhys part of that extra special one-in-ten that includes creative and divergent thinkers such as Mozart, Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and David Bowie. Great fit for our team or what! We also have to mention his hard work and humility and that this isn’t for laughs either – National Tell a Joke day is this coming Tuesday – for real!

All in all, we’re very happy to have him. Seriously.

“I am a community musician who loves to meet new people and encourage inclusive, diverse and creative music practice. I love making music and I think you should too!

My YAPA project ‘Music Mentors’ will support vulnerable young people who are Care Experienced. The project will create a supportive network and positive relationships within participants through creative, music based activities and shared goals. It will use music to foster skills such as leadership, teamwork, sociability, creativity and problem solving.

'Music Mentors’ will put the young people at its heart, encouraging them to direct and run activities and sessions. The project will give participants space and time to explore playing and creating music, and to form relationships through their music making. I’m excited to meet lots of new faces and can’t wait to see what music we make and experiences we can share together!” Iona Mathieson, Freelance Creative Practitioner

Sharing skills and knowledge.

Hello, hello to followers old + new! Just thought I'd pop in and show my face/coupon/fizzer/pus - all the best slang words for face are truly welcome!

Just now making work has taken a wee bit of a backseat while I juggle family life + project based work which is more community focused.

This summer I've been sharing my jewellery skills with young people from Syria through the YAPA - Youth Arts Practioner Award scheme funded + supported by @creativelearningaberdeen @aberdeen_cc
@creativescots

I was drawn to this project because I firmly believe creativity can bring all sorts of joy and positivity. And I'm really interested in people and their stories 🖤

More outdoor creative learning fun with our second group of families this afternoon with some messy painting, again using leaves, nature and canvases to creat some wonderful art, we made our own paint brushes, did leaf printing, even had dad Mike and son Mason doing some amazing marble paint, and made a tree with all of our hand prints on it. Again all the family got to take their art work home away with them and a huge thank you again to Lush Aberdeen for their kind donation of spray bottles. #familylearning #outdoorplay #outdoorlearning #fun #aberdeen Crea Tive Family Learning Aberdeen Caroline Learning LUSHaberdeen

Our second set of families this afternoon at Camp Geronimo building their dens! We had some great fun with the families connecting and helping each other and enjoying each other’s dens. Some really creative work in each den with seating, tv’s, even a telescope and decoration with leaves. The second part to our morning was some fun creative family painting on canvases, sheets, paper, trees and stumps, using leaves, twigs, ferns and acorns to creat prints and effects. All things we can use in nature or buy cheaply from places like b&m to do at home in the garden or park bringing the family together furthing building a bond, connecting with each other and above all just having messy creative fun! All of the families got to take a piece of their art work away with them also. Some wonderful work. Especially from Rhys and Amelia, both at the beginning were shy and didn’t want to come but by the end had so much fun didn’t want to leave! Along with that I would like to say a special thank you #lushaberdeen who kindly donated the spray bottles for us so we could use them to paint with! Thank you again for your kind donation as you can see they have been put to good use and everyone has had lots of fun! LUSHAberdeen Crea Tive Caroline Learning Family Learning Aberdeen
