Dear debaters,
We hope you and your loved ones are doing well.
Due to the tournament's cancellation, we have just sent you an email that explains the way to be refunded. This email should have been received by all the participants that had already paid.
In case you did pay the fee but haven't received the email, please get in contact with us sending an email to [email protected]
Thank you so much for your patience and we hope to see you all next year in Madrid :D
Madrid UCM OPEN 2020
FIRST OPEN IN MADRID EVER
Dear debaters,
As many of you may already know, the government of Spain declared a state of emergency on March 14th, which was set to last 15 days. Based on this information we decided to hold off on cancelling the tournament, because in theory, the dates of the tournament would not be affected. However, this Monday it was announced that the state of emergency would be extended until April 12th. In light of this, and given that more difficulties may arise, we have decided to cancel the Madrid UCM Open 2020.
We are now looking into rescheduling the tournament for a different time of year. We are dependent on the use of university facilities to run the tournament, but at the moment, one option is to move the tournament to sometime at the beginning of the next school year (october), in the hopes that those of you who have already bought flights can arrange to change them, provided that this option satisfies most debaters. Once we know whether this option is plausible, we will send around a survey to take your opinion into consideration.
For our refund policy we will adopt a policy similar to that applied by other European tournaments. For those who do still wish to attend, we will transfer the original fee and you will not have to pay any additional cost. For the rest of debaters, in the case that the tournament is postponed, or for the whole of debaters, if the tournament is finally cancelled, (i.e. we are unable to find another suitable date this year), we will refund every debater as much as we can while trying to minimize our losses; the exact figures will be publicly available as soon as we have them. Pre-paid drinks tickets will be completely refunded. You will also receive a 15% registration fee discount for the next edition of the tournament in 2021 as a gesture of reward for all the inconveniences.
Thank you for your interest in this first Madrid UCM Open. We are so glad that the tournament received so much attention and we look forward to hosting it as soon as we can. I would also like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to Open when it takes place. We would be so happy to have you!
Sincerely,
Raúl Viñas
Madrid UCM Open convenor

Last thing the Spanish circuit knew about our next IA is that he almost changed a flight just to come to our national tournament in february. It seems like he regreted not coming and now he is going to help us at the Madrid Open rising up the judge pool's level even more!!
Simon started his debate career at WSDC 2015 for the Netherlands, where he ranked 2nd EFL speaker. Since then he has spoken, judged and CA’d at over 60 tournaments in 16 different countries. Among other things, he has been DCA of Spanish Worlds 2019, ESL finalist of Warsaw Euros and broke at LSE Open 2019. Some further CA ships include Dutch Nationals, the Hugill Cup (Edmonton), BP UAM 2019 and other competitions in Canada, Germany, Romania, Slovakia and Peru.
Simon is very excited to return to Madrid!

Our priority is not to let you down, so we are going to keep publishing the amazing IA that are coming in April to Madrid!
I present you Hadar Goldberg!
Hadar has 10 judge breaks, including 3 times chairing outrounds (LSE Open Semi, Oxford wom*ns Open final, and Paris Open Open Semi).
She is the WUDC 2020 ESL Champion, EUDC ESL grand finalist, and has 12 additional breaks including Budapest Open, Amsterdam Open, PEP IV, Lund IV and the Israeli National Championships in both Hebrew and English.
I couldn't be wrong if I'd say that we already have an incredible judge pool, but there are 2 IA more to be announced... Do you want to know who they are?

~~ACCOMMODATION ANNOUNCEMENT~~
Good evening debaters!
Less and less time is left for the Madrid Open, and as couldn't be otherwise, the desire, the excitement and the occasional doubt are growing. But don't be worried, we are here to try to solve them!
We know that one of your main concerns is accommodation.
Accommodations is NOT included in the price, because booking such a big place for everybody was way more expensive for you than getting different places by your own.
We have been requested about CRASH, unfortunately, we are a small club and we are not able to provide accommodation for all of you.
However, there is no need to worry, because if there is something everybody knows is that Complutense University is situated in the heart of Madrid!
The School of Philosophy (Facultad de Filosofía), where the tournament will take place, is located in Ciudad Universitaria, which is an area very close to Moncloa-Argüelles, with great transport and accommodation facilities.
That's why we consider that the most affordable option for all budgets could be renting an Airbnb, hostels, etc.
The most recommended areas near the university, that will allow you to be one step away from the tournament and the center, are Moncloa (with many restaurants and University environment in the area), Argüelles, Vicente Aleixandre, Guzmán el Bueno, Príncipe Pío, Islas Filipinas and Ventura Rodríguez.
However, any place in Madrid will be fine, the capital has a large transport network at your service to move from anywhere. The main points of connectivity are:
Ciudad Universitaria: underground (line 6).
Moncloa: underground (lines 3 and 6). There is also a bus link to the school of philosophy: G, 132, 133, 82 ...
We hope that accommodation doesn't mean an impediment for you to come, so if you have any questions or need any kind of information, do not hesitate to ask us! We will try our best to help!
[email protected]
We are looking forward to seeing you soon in Madrid!
