Yacht Cookery Courses are delivered at The Galley Club, Palma de Mallorca. Situated in the heart of Santa Catalina, and on the doorstep of what is widely considered to be the Yachting Capital of Europe, makes this the perfect location. The Galley Club offers Yacht Cookery Training designed to put the aspiring on the right path to becoming a professional on Luxury Yachts.

Misión: Our comprehensive training is recommended to those who are committed and serious about joining the Yachting Industry at entry level or current crew who require further skills to enhance their career prospects. Throughout the courses Students will team up to provide a truly interactive and realistic learning experience, all from our unique workshop which has been designed to create a realistic environment similar to that of a Luxury Yacht

2018 SALARY SURVEY

How much should you earn? Good question!

There is no such thing as a standard salary in yachting, but every year a number of crew agencies and Dockwalk magazine take a look at the year that went by.

Among others your salary depends on
- experience
- longevity onboard
- certification/professional qualifications
- size of vessel
- sail vs power
- private vs charter (private programs should get a higher salary, while charter programs are compensated with tips)
- amount of vacation
- bonus vs no bonus
- owner's use of the yacht
- special skills (licensed massage therapist, yoga / fitness instructor, butler experience, dive instructor, close protection experience- just to name a few)
- location of the yacht
- flag registry / contract
- to some extent extra holidays (anything over 30 days) may also weigh in on your salary

Obviously, a "greenie" cannot expect a rock star salary or even an average salary from Day 1 in the industry. With that said, just because you are new to the industry doesn't mean, you should be willing to work for a lot less than the numbers found in the salary survey's below - give or take a few hundred Euros/Dollars per month. Being new to the industry, what matters most is to "get a foot in the door". If the yacht pays somewhat less than the numbers listed in the salary surveys, then it will often pay to do a season onboard and move on to a better program, once the season is over. In all fairness, it does make sense that you are paid a little less, when having less skills to offer than those, who have been around for a season or three. If you are asked for your salary expectations, you can refer to the salary surveys below, but keep in mind your objective is to get started in yachting, so don't be overly fuzzy...

As a general rule Junior crew can ask somewhere around

Junior Deckhands: 2,200 - 2,500 Euros
Junior Steward/ess: 2,200 - 2,500 Euros

Size of the vessel doesn't make a difference on entry level salaries, perhaps with the exception of yachts below 20-25 meters/60-75 feet, where the budgets can be a lot smaller.

For all other positions, please see the salary surveys below, which will give you an idea of the average STARTING salaries.

IN ADDITION TO SALARY It is customary that owners provide food, uniforms, transportation, and other onboard expenses such as laundry, soap, linens, ect. Health and dental insurance after a probationary period of 30 - 90 days is normal, as well as periodic performance evaluations for pay increases.

VACATION AND TIME OFF vary on a vessel's schedule, but 4 - 6 weeks paid holiday per year and a 5 - 6 day work week unless on charter is standard.

OFFERING TO WORK FOR FREE to gain experience is understandable, but also frowned upon by other yacht crew. Our profession is not a charity for multi-millionaires, where we support high net worth yacht owners save pennies.. Be a good colleague and carry on to the next boat, if you feel, you are being taken advantage off.

PAY RISES, if any, are decided on an individual basis. Come time for negotiating your pay check for the coming year, a good strategy can be to ask twice the amount, you are hoping to receive (within reason - and as long as you have proven your worth onboard). Do keep in mind that a pay rise is something that is often performance based, while at other times a certain percentage rate is given to everyone onboard without room for negotiation. Adding new qualifications such as a Yachtmaster Offshore/Ocean / OOW or higher can have great negotiating value. If there is no room in the budget for pay rises, you can try to see, if there is room for extending your amount of annual holidays instead, or perhaps having courses paid.

FREELANCE and DELIVERIES
Captains 250-500+ Euros
Engineers 200-350+ Euros
Deckhands and Mates 125-250 Euros
Interior 125-250 Euros
Chefs/Cooks 200-350+ Euros

Above are day rates. Size of vessel, your experience and qualifications determine the rate based on a survey in the Yacht Crew groups in 2017.

DAYWORK should pay either 100-120 Euros per day or 15 Euros an hour in the Med depending on experience and qualifications. In US expect 120-150 USD with little experience, but all the way up to 200 with experience 15-20 USD an hour. These numbers may vary slightly.
Lunch is often offered on top of your salary, but not always.
