Topic: Optimization of Additively Manufactured Electrical Machines
Supervisors: Ants Kallaste

Short description: Within this thesis, the PhD candidate will learn about the additive manufacturing of electrical machines and design and optimization of special types of electrical machines. The main emphasis will be on the development of topology optimization procedure of electrical machine core construction considering the advantages of additive manufacturing. We will provide necessary hardware and software for simulation and prototyping the machines. The candidate is responsible for developing and implementing the optimization procedure. At the end of the thesis, several prototype machine will be built and the candidate will participate in this process. The candidate will present his/her work at international conferences and publish journal papers required to complete the thesis within the PhD studies.

We are glad to announce an exciting opportunity to join Electrical Machines Group in TalTech - Tallinn University of Technology as a PhD student!

Topic: Wideband electrical machines monitoring for practical diagnostics
Supervisors: Toomas Vaimann and Lauri Kütt

Short description: Electric machines in drives are connected to the frequency converters that feed the electric machines with the supply power by outputting the controlled voltage and current, generally responding to the machine rotational characteristics such as rotation speed and torque applied. The frequency converters themselves are using switching operation and their output is defined through specific PWM-synthesised waveforms. In the research the individual PWM-switching pulse transients are investigated to provide information on the rotating machine operating conditions. The switching pulses provide frequency range response in MHz range, offering more insight to the full circuit, including the frequency converter but also the machine windings, connections etc. Research tasks include measurement and monitoring of the considered transients, including practical measurement system specification, signal processing and detection criteria outlining.

We are glad to announce an exciting opportunity to join Electrical Machines Group in TalTech as a PhD student!

Topic: The parameters estimation-based condition monitoring of electrical machines
Supervisors: Toomas Vaimann and Bilal Asad

Short description: Within the thesis, the PhD candidate will learn the diagnostics methods and signal processing techniques used for the predictive maintenance of electrical machines. The main emphasis will be on the development of diagnostic algorithms that can estimate various design parameters of electrical machines using machine models and the measured global signals. By comparing the estimated parameters with the originally designed ones, the possible cause of the fault will be predicted. We will provide the necessary hardware and software for the simulation and testing of the diagnostics tools. The candidate is responsible for developing and implementing the diagnostics procedures. A working demonstrator will be built and tested at the end of the thesis. The candidate will present his/her work at international conferences and publish journal papers required to complete the thesis within the PhD studies.

EMG had a study visit in the framework of the project “Digital platform supporting remote laboratory classes in electrical engineering, mechatronics and automation (ReLabEMA)”.

The event took place in Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania). During this meeting, there were organized:

🎓 Discussion of teaching practices and best experiences between partner universities.

🎓 Visit to different laboratories at Faculty of Electronics.

🎓 Excursion to Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant.

Participating universities: Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania), University Politehnica Timisoara (Romania), Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (Germany), University of Zielona Góra (Poland) and the Technical School Complex from Wodzisław Śl (Poland).

This week, EMG had a study visit on Power Electronics.

In the framework of the project “Retraining of Fossil Fuel Mining Area Workforce for Modern Industry (REMAKER)”:

⚡️ Teaching practices in partner universities (Tallinn University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen, University of West Bohemia) were discussed.

⚡️There was a visit to different laboratories at department: power electronics lab, high-frequency conversion lab, control of electrical drives lab, etc.

⚡️Excursion to Coal Mine Guido took place.

⚡️There was also a visit to KOMAG – Mining Institute, where project experiences and possible cooperations were introduced.

⚡️Finally, there was an industrial visit to Rockwell Automation.

Ants Kallaste, Toomas Vaimann, Anton Rassõlkin, Hans Tiismus have won the National Science Award for technical sciences for the cycle "Additive manufacturing of electrical machines"

Estonian Academy of Science: "The laureates are developing additive manufacturing as one of the 3D printing methods for the production of various electrical devices (from electric motors to transformers) and their components, but also mathematical methods to optimize technological processes and electric machine construction. The breakthrough lies in using and developing the technology, based on selective laser melting in Estonia."

Congratulations!!!

Today, EMG participated in Scientific Seminar organized by Poland Section of IEEE Magnetics at Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.

Professor Anton Rassõlkin presented actual topics of mechatronics field. Our junior researcher Karolina Kudelina presented her research about intelligent diagnostics of electrical machines. Master student Daniil Valme discussed generative design in prototyping. Dr Toomas Vaimann presented latest trends in field of electrical machines.
