Nearly 30 of us from the EKA animation department visited one of our absolute favorite Animation festivals in the world, ! We had so much fun, and I'm sure it's safe to say we all gained lots of inspiration and creative energy. See you next year Animateka! Yesterday the second year bachelors had their final exam for their photography class taught by Kalev Vapper. BA students have this class to prepare them for photo taking in puppet films.
The students had very strong work. We are always happy to see our students excell in other mediums of art! Good job BAN 20 :) Keep it up!

On Wednesdays we like to host inspirational lectures with talented and driven artists working in animation and related fields. This week we had Sergei Kibus, a cinematographer, director and animator. Sergei is director of the successful stop-notion short film "Teofrastus".
Sergei is also a member of our faculty, teaching puppet film theory, story telling and design to BA students, guiding them in the early stages of story and script production of their final projects.
He shared with us his creative process, insights and experienced working on Teofrastus and his other projects.

Not too long ago, students partook in a direct animation workshop taught by Ülo P**kov. Direct animation is a method of animation where you scratch and paint your animation directly onto film roll. The effect is images with high contrast, bold lines, and an energetic feel to the style.

Last week we hosted our first mini "72 hour film festival" where students spent 72 hours making short films in the medium of their choice, in a workshop taught by Anu Kadri Uustalu. After the workshop we screened the films with an audience and enjoyed some pastry and tea together.
Congratulations to the two winners of the audience award: Maria Rakitina and Agnes Milla Bereczki!

Recently students partook in a sand animation workshop taught by Lilli-Krõõt Repnau. Sand is moved around and photographed frame per frame over a glass surface lit below by a light. The result is a very mystical and beautiful aesthetic. Take a look for yourself!

We very cordially invite you all to join the gala of the new and fresh 72hr Film Festival, hosted by the department, showcasing films being currently made in the 72 Hour Workshop taught by Anu Kadri Uustalu. The program will also include hot-out-the-oven films made in the recent scratch-film and sand animation workshops.
There is an “audience favorite” competition for the participants of the 72 hour workshop in which you, the audience get to vote for the winner! The winner will be awarded a cute little prize.
After the screening there will be mingling, so come hangout and chat with the filmmakers and students!

Last week 3rd year bachelors took a trip to Animateka film festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with their teacher Martinus Klemet, and project coordinator Lyza Jarvis. Current EKA animation students, employees and alumni had their films in various programs at animateka: Bruno Quast, Tamires Muniz Ribeiro, Andrea Guizar, Fukumi Nakazawa, Lucija Mrlzjak & Morten Tšinakov, Joonas Taul, Martinus Klemet, Maria Rakitina and Lyza Jarvis.
Many of the days in Ljubljanna were very rainy and foggy, but overall it gave a cozy and homey feel to the festival. We enjoyed watching very inspiring films, visiting museums and connecting with other film authors and students. We can't wait for next year!
Thank you Animateka team for such a wonderful festival in such a beautiful city!
