Open Call – due date April 25

👁‍🗨 Our friends from Finland Reconfiguring Territories are organising a Spring School from June 13-19, which explores the politics of collective imagination in the midst of the socio-political and technological upheavals we currently face.

❗️The Spring School consists of three workshops overlapping workshops led by three different artists: Ingrid Svanfeldt, METASITU and Linda Boļšakova – a Latvian artist with whom the LCCA has had the pleasure of working with many times.
Together the workshops form a School for Speculative Environmental Education.

Tere tulemast!

ANNOUNCEMENT! 340 artists applied to come to the Narva Art Residency and 16 were selected to the artists-in-residence programme in 2022.

(eesti keeles allpool / русскии ниже)

Narva Art Residency announced its open call for artists-in-residence last December and received a total of 340 applications from 69 different countries. 16 artists, artistic duos and creatives were selected to join NART residencies in 2022.

The residents were chosen by a jury including Maria Lind (curator from Sweden and the councillor of culture at the Swedish embassy in Moscow), Maria Kapajeva (contemporary and photo artist from Narva, London, now based in Tallinn), Denis Polubojarov (city artist of Narva), Gregor Taul (Estonian art historian and curator) and Johanna Rannula (head of Narva Art Residency).

As the open call was more popular than expected and the number of applications was double the amount of 2020, the jury decided to include more artists than initially planned. The length of the residency period varies from three to nine weeks. The residents will be accommodated at the historical John Carr’s Villa and have access to the Kreenholm Factory. The open call focused on artists whose aim was to work with the community of Narva and/or the local context.

Andrea Stanislav (USA / Russia) aims to create a multi-channel immersive video installation compiled of interviews with a group of old ladies whom she met at Kohtla-Järve in 2019. (www.andreastanislav.com/)

Dambi Kim (South Korea) is a tea ceremony master who runs a herbal pharmacy lab called DAMBI's tearoom (www.dambikim.com/)

Daria Akimova (Russia) will come to the residency with her son. She aims to make a comfortable safe space for mothers and their children for daily meetings of artistic practices (vimeo.com/dashaakimova)

Iris Honderdos and Arno Peeters (the Netherlands) will explore the surroundings to start a community art project (tapetv.nl/presentation)

Jacque Falcheti (Brazil) aims to compose 6 songs that are inspired by the city of Narva. She experiments with melodic paths, Brazilian rhythms and poetry (jacquefalcheti.com/)

Kaisu Koivisto(Finland) has been at NART a few years back and she will continue her work of taking photos of Kreenholm and making digital collages (www.kaisukoivisto.com)

Kent Robinson (France) continues a project to create an alphabet that combines Cyrillic and Latin. The border town of Narva is quite appropriate for that (kentrobinson.fr/)

Leah Schulze (Germany) creates interactive communication tools for people suffering from dementia and their families. She does her fieldwork at Narva care home (clink-playfuldesign.com/)

Lia Dostlieva and Andrii Dostliev (Ukraine) are artists and cultural anthropologists. They will create a participative audiovisual installation that explores the traumatic Soviet past (dostliev.org/, liadostlieva.org/)

Liina Siib (Estonia) will collect material for a film script that stems from the 1962 Soviet science fiction romance film “Amphibian Man” (www.liinasiib.com)

Maksym Kozlov and Oksana Trypolska (Ukraine) will interview Narva’s residents and compile photography and video from private and public archives to study the local fashion of the 1990s and 2000s. (maksymkozlov.persona.co/)

Nazarii Zanoz (Ukraine) creates a soundscape or/and soundwalk of the Kreenholm Manufacture’s golden times (soundcloud.com/nazarii-zanoz)

Oscar Lebeck (Germany) investigates the topic of the Vaivara concentration camp in northeastern Estonia through the medium of photography. (oscarlebeck.de/)

Payam Parsafar and Mana Madah (Iran) will work on a documentary film project on historic sites in Narva.

Saara Mildeberg and Jüri Mildeberg (Estonia) are a father and daughter duo. Jüri is a graphic artist and a book illustrator and Saara is a PhD student in cultural geography. Together they explore the image of the Kreenholm neighbourhood. (instagram.com/metsmildeberg/, cargocollective.com/saarahanna)

Sasha Pasha (Russia, Finland) is an artistic duo who will have two parallel projects – they collect old training clothes to create an artistic tapestry and they will research Kolga concentration camp in Harjumaa. (sashapasha.com)

In addition to the artists selected from the open call, Narva Art Residency will host several other residents in 2022. Hagen Verleger • Typography, Book Design, Research‘s and Christina Gruber‘s earlier residencies were postponed due to the Covid pandemic but can now hopefully fulfil them. A three-year research project Reconfiguring Territories will bring Laura Kuusk and the artist duo Variolambo to Narva. In cooperation with Finnish Cultural Foundation and HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme, Narva Art Residency will host Jaakko Autio and Kenneth Bamberg. “Kreenholm Plants” community garden residency is taken by Sean Roy Parker.

Next open call will take place in the fall of 2022.

Narva kunstiresidentuuri kandideeris 340 kunstnikku ja 2022. aasta residentuuriprogrammi valiti neist 16.

Detsembris kuulutas Narva Kunstiresidentuur välja avatud konkursi kunstnike leidmiseks ja kokku laekus 340 avaldust 69 erinevast riigist. NARTi 2022. aasta programmiga valiti liituma 16 kunstnikku, kunstnike duot ja loovisikut.

Residendid valis välja žürii, kuhu kuulusid Maria Lind (Rootsi kuraator ja kultuurinõunik Rootsi saatkonnas Moskvas), Maria Kapajeva (fotokunstnik), Denis Polubojarov (Narva linna kunstnik), Gregor Taul (kunstiteadlane ja kuraator) ja Johanna Rannula (Narva kunstiresidentuuri juht).

Kuna avatud konkurss oli oodatust populaarsem ja taotlusi laekus kaks korda rohkem kui 2020. aastal, otsustas žürii kaasata esialgsest plaanitust rohkem residente. Residentuuri pikkus varieerub kolmest nädalast üheksani. Residendid elavad ajaloolises John Carr’i villas ja neil on ligipääs Kreenholmi tehasesse.

Piirilinn Narva on selleks igati sobiv koht.

Oscar Lebeck (Saksamaa) uurib Kirde-Eestis asuva Vaivara koonduslaagri lugu fotograafia kaudu.

Koos uuritakse Kreenholmi linnaosa kuvandit.

Sashapasha (Venemaa, Soome) on kunstnikeduo, kellel on ees kaks paralleelset projekti – kogutakse vanu treeningriideid, et neid luua üks kunstiteos, ning uuritakse Kolga koonduslaagrit Harjumaal

Lisaks konkursil välja valitud kunstnikele võõrustab Narva kunstiresidentuur 2022. aastal veel mitmeid teisi residente. Hagen Verlegeri ja Christina Gruberi varasemad residentuurid lükati Covid pandeemia tõttu edasi, kuid nüüd saavad need loodetavasti teoks. Kolmeaastane uurimisprojekt “Territooriumide (Ümber) mõtestamine” toob Narva Laura Kuuse ja kunstnikeduo Variolambo. Koostöös Soome kultuurifondi ja HIAP-iga võõrustab Narva Kunstiresidentuur Jaakko Autiot ja Kenneth Bambergi. “Kreenholm Plants” kogukonna aia residentuuris on Sean Roy Parker.

Järgmine avatud konkurs toimub 2022. aasta sügisel.

(Re)configuring Territories is an interdisciplinary research program for emerging architects, artist

Operating as usual

07/10/2022

Dear friend,

We are organizing a festival at Narva Art Residency. The festival is called Festival of Invitations, and it consists of lectures, discussions, workshops and a celebratory dinner at the Narva  art residence and its surroundings. The event also celebrates the opening of an exhibition by varialambo [1] and Andréa Stanislav.

The event starts on Saturday with a seminar on the 29th of October and continues on a Sunday morning with workshops and performances. The festival is free of charge and is translated in both English and Russian.

This event is the concluding part of four-year (Re)configuring Territories research project, and we hope that it will bring together both those who have participated in the project in the previous years and those who have not yet become familiar with it. During the last four years, we have been able to spend time in Narva, thinking about issues related to its future and the Baltic Sea region, together with local residents, artists and researchers from many different fields. For us this festival is a way to share the thoughts, poems, videos, conflicts between worldviews and ways of being together we have developed and got to know during this time.

It would be great if you could join the festival!

(Re)configuring Territories stands for free and open societies, against war and violence. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

The war has also changed the context of (Re)configuring Territories project. We are currently reorganizing our resources and this year's programme.

23/12/2021

🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄
Before the year ends, we – the organisers in Finland and Estonia – gathered to share wishes and hopes for 2022, which will be the final year of the (Re)configuring Territories programme.

The annual cycle’s theme next year is 𝐻𝒾𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓇𝒾𝑒𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝒯𝑜𝓂𝑜𝓇𝓇𝑜𝓌 – 𝒮𝓅𝑒𝒸𝓊𝓁𝒶𝓉𝒾𝓋𝑒 𝐸𝒹𝓊𝒸𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝒶𝓁 𝐼𝓃𝓈𝓉𝒾𝓉𝓊𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝓈 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒞𝒾𝓉𝒾𝑒𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒩𝑒𝒶𝓇 𝐹𝓊𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒. This year, despite many uncertainties on the way and public events restrictions that were lifted in Estonia only at the end of spring, we managed to organise the programme on-site in June. In 2022, we are wishing for more engagement with the local context in Narva, and dreaming of creating a space (even temporary) that local people would feel excited and meaningful to have. Defining concrete methods and ways of working for future design and architecture education, unlearning and rethinking existing practises, and creating revolutional educational moments are our main goals with this programme. We are also envisioning inviting colleagues and collaborators to discuss what could be the continuation of this project – maybe, in a big garden party. And of course, with a lot of delicious food made with local ingredients!

Next spring, we will be hosting again a full programme in Narva Art Residency: live action role play, Spring School workshops, and two residencies with artists Laura Kuusk (Estonia) and varialambo (Finland/Germany). Dates, application process and mentors for the play and the Spring School will be announced early in spring.

Thank you everyone who were part of (Re)configuring Territories this year: participants, mentors, artists, residents, and partners. Have a relaxing winter break and be well! 💫

TOK curators: Anna Bitkina and Maria Veits | (Re)configuring Territories - NART

This month TOK curators will join the (Re)configuring Territories residency. As a nomadic collective working between Russia and Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, TOK curators place their practice between historical analysis and political imagination. Their multilayered, durational, and cross-disciplinary projects generate new knowledge about the causes and consequences of changing political realities.
