Learning a language is about understanding each other, respecting differences, and being more empathetic.
In what ways has speaking a different language enhanced your level of tolerance?

I‘ve just visited The Little Prince exhibition and it was a wonderful experience.
I read this book for the first time when I was around 10. I learned more about the book and its author, Antoine de Sint-Exupéry.
The book was translated into 541 languages and dialects! Wow!
Have you ever read The Little Prince in Portuguese?
Unlike English, most nouns in Portuguese are either masculine or feminine. You can notice that many masculine nouns have the -o ending and the feminine nouns the -a ending. There are many, many exceptions, though, so don't jump to conclusions.
So, how could we classify "panda"? Is it masculine or feminine? Is there the word "pando"?
Panda is a noun that has a single form for both masculine and feminine. In Portuguese we call it: substantivo comum de 2 gêneros. Masculine and feminine can be distinguished by the words that go with this type of noun such as an article.
O panda | A panda
Did you know that there are many nouns in Portuguese that fall into the category of 'same word for two genders'?
My teaching journey has been enriched by the presence of all my students. THANK YOU so much for your trust, dedication, and enthusiasm!

Translation is the art of bridging languages and cultures.
Even if you're a devoted language enthusiast, fluent in may languages, there will come a day when you need a translator. There are approximately 7000 spoken languages worldwide. To put into perspective, one of the biggest hyperpolyglot, John Bowring, boasted proficiency in a staggering 100 out of 200 languages he was acquainted with. Yet, this number still falls considerably short of encompassing even half of the world's diverse languages.
My point is: Feel free to explore and learn one, two, as many languages as you heart desires but honor the translators. They make our world more connected through their work.
Here is a question for you: Is there a word in your native language that defies a straightforward translation into Portuguese? Share in the comments and join us in celebrating the International Translation Day!
Do you know what gets on my nerves?
Food waste!
People buy much more food than they actually need. They order enormous portions that they can't finish. And what happens next?
Huge amounts of food end up in the trash. Sadly, there are still many people who have (almost) nothing to eat.
Today is the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction. Food waste can be minimized. Think about it! Even the smallest actions can make a difference.
Are you taking any steps to reduce food waste?

While machine translation can be a helpful tool when traveling, it comes with disadvantages and limitations.
– It can lead to misunderstandings or even embarrassing situations.
– It (still) doesn't consider cultural nuances.
– It may end up producing culturally inappropriate or offensive translations.
Knowing the local language allows travelers to make their journeys more memorable, even if they know just a couple of phrases.
Happy World Tourism Day! Celebrate this occasion by unlocking the full potential of the Portuguese language during your travels.
Share your Portuguese learning and travel experiences. Have you ever gone through an embarrassing or funny situation while trying to communicate in Portuguese with locals?
Wow! Guess what? You know me! 🌻 Yes, sunflower is my favourite flower.
But there's something you may not know: the reasons why it is my favorite flower.
I've grown sunflowers myself. They are not only beautiful but they also bring us their teachings. Here are some of them.
Facing the light: Sunflowers turn their faces towards the sun to soak up the essential rays for growth.
Growth – adaptation – patience: They grow tall and strong, adapting to their environment, but they don't grow overnight. They take time to reach their full potential. My tallest sunflower, nurtured in a mere flower pot (!), reached 2 meter high.
Diversity: They come in various sizes and colors.
Abundance: the sunflower head – that brown-coloured part – is made up of densely packed seeds. The mature sunflower gracefully withers, bestowing its seeds, ready to embark on a new cycle of life.

As June comes to an end, what becomes of the JUNE Festival?
🤔
🤔
🤔
Well, nothing changes. It continues in July! It carries on into July with the same fervor and excitement. While some may adjust the name to align with the current month, most of us simply continue to refer to it as June Festival.
Have you had the opportunity to attend any June Festival celebrations?
A central component of June Festival is the "arraiá". It is where the heart of the party unfolds during the festival.
The term is a colloquial way of saying "arraial" which means a traditional rural celebration or gathering, typically held outdoors. It is a lively and colorful space where music, dance, food, and games create an atmosphere of joy.
World Portuguese Language Day!
Learning a language is also collecting memories. Portuguese is my native language, so I suppose I have more to share from the other languages I’ve learned throughout my life.
I still remember the first mispronounced word in German and the embarrassment it caused me 😁
I also remember the excitement of understanding what an English speaker was telling me without translating the words in my mind.
What memory of learning Portuguese do you have to share?

If you‘re looking for a place to stay in Rio, I have a tip for you.
Discovery Hostel is located in Gloria, within walking distance of the subway station. So you can easily move around the city.
The common areas have a homey vibe. The hostel and its partners organize different activities for the guests. It’s up to you if and in what activities you want to engage.
Last but not least, a little bird told me the bar is also open for nonguests 😉😎
Thank you Fábio and Mires for the warm welcome! Hope to see you soon.
