Crafting Connections — Berlin Wood Sisters 01/04/2024

I have a huge favor to ask from you.

I have been organizing team building events for a while now, and these events have been extremely enjoyable for me and for the participants. We have carved hundreds of spoons together, build some awesome birdhouses and even designed and built bigger furniture.

It is my birthday tomorrow. And birthdays for me are for setting new bold goals, even if I know I can not make it happen on my own.

Which is why I am writing this post.

My goal for my new year is to host 100 companies at my woodshop.

This is where you can help me. I have prepared an e-book for corporate leaders who are responsible for employee happiness. This book is a guide how to implement creative woodworking into their team building events.

If I am totally honest, it is a shameless promo to my services. But my workshops are amazing, ask anyone who has been at my team building events (I can give you the contacts, or you can check the list of happy companies at www.wood-sisters.com)

Please help this book to get to as many companies as possible.

There are 60 000 international companies in Berlin, help me to reach 100 of them.

Put a heart, write a comment, and share - this is my love language and beautiful birthday present I really appreciate.

Build a durable cutting board

In this post I teach you how to create beauty using waste wood.

Materials you'll need:

Scrap wood pieces of equal thickness (at least 3 cm)
Wood glue
Clamps
Sandpaper
Food-grade mineral oil
Instructions:

1 Choose your scrap wood pieces. Make sure they are all the same thickness (at least 3 cm) and cut them to the desired length and width for your cutting board.

2 Lay out your wood pieces to create the pattern you want for your cutting board. You can arrange them in a variety of ways to create different patterns.

3 Once you've decided on your pattern, apply wood glue to one side of each wood piece and press them together in the desired pattern. Use clamps to hold the pieces together until the glue dries.

4 After the glue has dried, use a saw or a router to trim the edges of the cutting board to create a clean, even edge.

5 Use sandpaper to sand the surface of the cutting board until it is smooth and even. Be sure to sand the edges and corners as well.

6 Apply a food-grade mineral oil to the surface of the cutting board to protect it from moisture and stains.

7 Use a clean cloth to apply a thin layer of oil to the entire surface of the cutting board. Allow the oil to soak in for at least 24 hours, then wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth.

8 Your cutting board is now ready to use! Be sure to clean it after each use and reapply mineral oil periodically to keep it in good condition.

I hope this helps you create a strong and durable cutting board from your scrap wood pieces!

“The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your relationships.”

This quote by Esther Perel came into my mind when I was taking U5 to home from our Woodworking & Networking event and had a look at the group selfie we made together.

My networking events always tend to attract interesting and talented women, we have so much fun together and it feels as if we have known each other for years. I know that we will not only build skills for life, but also friendships, or at least good aquintances. And this is most valuable thing in life.

If you want to join us in February, find the link to the next Woodworking & Networking in the bio or simply DM me.

Hope to see you soon!

Following other female woodworkers and designers can be very motivating and inspiring to take actions to level up your own skill. So here is my list of my personal favorite people on Internet.

1. ANA WHITE
Ana story started with a miter saw, drill and a 18 gauge brad nailer in Alaska where she lives with her husband and two kids. They had built a house and couldn`t afford to buy furniture. So she took the tools they had and started to design and build furniture which is doable and also affordable. The first project turned out so good that Ana wanted to continue. Now she has built everything from the simple furniture to more complicated tiny houses. I like Ana for her down-to-earth attitude, she proofs that you dont have to have expensive tools to start building your own furniture.

2. DARBIN ORVAR
Born and raised in Sweden, where woodworking and crafting are taught in schools at an early age, Linn has always been interested in making and building. She started her YouTube channel in 2014. She loves hand tools and builds with wood, fabric, metal etc. Now she lives with her husband and baby in US. What I love about her channel is that she shares also her life and other ideas which make her channel very interesting and inspiring. She also vlogs.

3. SHANTY TO CHICK
Meet sisters Ashley & Whitney, two power tool wielding DIY queens, on a mission to create beautiful and affordable furniture, turning houses into homes. Self-described coffee enthusiasts and treasure-weavers, the two sisters transformed a hobby into a dream career. The self-taught carpenters post their journey online to inspire other people to “pick up that scary tool and go!”

4. GET HANDS DIRTY
Cristiana lives in Portugal where she completed the First Cycle Degree in Fine Arts – Sculpture from the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Univesidade do Porro and the IX Training Course for Music Perfomers at Casa da Música. She has been getting her hands dirty on YouTube since 2015 by building, filming, music, sound making, video editing, post-production and social media management. Christiana is the first YouTuber maker I started to follow because I was instantly hooked by her videos. She is not only a good maker but also a good story teller.

8. APRIL WILKERSON
April Wilkerson is one of the most popular woodworkers on YouTube having nearly a million subscribers and she has produced over 200 videos. She picked up her first tool in January 2013 because she couldn`t afford to buy the things she wanted to have at home so she decided to try her hand at making them instead. That was a good decision. Her videos help you to learn woodworking from the very basics to more advanced projects.

5. LAURA KAMPF
Laura Kampf is a self-employed Artist/Designer/Maker and Content Creator who is deeply passionate about her Workshop, developing her Skillset and Making Stuff. You will have a very close look to a makers world where you can see how cool stuff is being made, enjoy good camerawork and artistic video editing. I love Laura Kampf for her entertaining style, I could watch her videos for hours and not get bored.

7. 3 x 3 CUSTOM
A mother of three, Tamar shares her woodworking process mostly on Instagram, but she also has a small but quicly growing YouTube channel. Her relationship with woodworking grew from the nessecity. She was searching for an outdoor storage bench and couldn't find anything she liked. So she decided to build it herself. Instantly, she fell in love with power tools, hand tools and everything in between. Her projects are easy to understand and doable, she also gives tips and tricks about organizing your workshop.

Woodcarving is a great way to gain focus and relief mental stress. It requires sustained concentration and attention, providing the ability to clear your head and focus on one specific, creative endeavor. Over time, this can be hugely beneficial for our mental well being, helping to reduce anxiety and provide an overall sense of peace and joy.

How have your holidays been?
For me it has been busy studying. The exam will take place on 7.01 and I can‘t say I feel prepared enough… Why German is such a hard language?!?

MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

My name is Anna-Liisa, I am a DIY woodworker and spoon carver from Berlin. I want to make sustainable, affordable and stylish furniture available for more people.

This is why I run workshops for Wood Sisters in Berlin. Why sisters? Because my own non-scientific studies show that women all over the world tend to hesitate start learning to woodwork. I will support them by their journey of discovering the world of woodcraft and encourage them to push their limits.

You can come and learn the basics of DIY woodworking or carve your very first spoon with me. I also make use of the wood waste I get from my friends and make Zero Waste Jewelry and Zero Waste Toys workshops. We make cool stuff together, even if it is your first time to hold a drill in your hands.

Sometimes men attend my workshops too, so if you are a nice guy and would want to learn how to build your own furniture, I welcome you friendly.

Woodworking helps you to relax, connect to yourself and other Wood Sisters. You will see how beautiful things you can make with your own hands. You are going to love it.
