Meet Sebastian Gottschalk – Our New TA!

We’re excited to welcome Sebastian Gottschalk to our team! With a Master of Science in Mathematics and a passion for teaching, Sebastian joined us in November as a Teaching Assistant for the Data Science and AI Full-time Program.

🎯 What he brings to the table:

Sebastian’s expertise lies in mathematics and programming, with a focus on statistics, stochastics, and numerical mathematics. His unique perspective bridges both the theoretical foundations and practical Python implementations of data science algorithms—making him a fantastic resource for our program participants.

💡 What he loves about the role:

For Sebastian, the best part of the job is working with people, sharing knowledge, and diving into the fascinating topics covered in the program.

🎭 Beyond the classroom:

When he’s not teaching, you can find Sebastian:
🎲 Playing card and board games
🚴‍♂️ Riding his bike
🎶 Playing the French horn—he’s been part of an orchestra for nearly 16 years!

Switzerland faces AI chip restrictions – what’s next?

A new US government decree limits AI chip exports to 120 countries—including Switzerland. While 18 nations, such as select EU countries, Japan, and South Korea, can continue importing without restrictions, Switzerland has been placed in a second-tier category with capped imports.

🇨🇭 What does this mean for Switzerland?

AI research institutions like ETH Zurich may struggle to access cutting-edge hardware.

The Swiss government is seeking clarity, with Economics Minister Guy Parmelin questioning why Switzerland isn’t classified among the US’s closest allies.
The restrictions aim to maintain US dominance in AI while limiting access for rivals like China and Russia.

With these new rules taking effect in April 2025, Swiss officials are in discussions to mitigate the impact. Could this be a major setback for Switzerland’s AI industry? Or an opportunity to push for greater technological independence?
