Please welcome our FICs 2023 presenter Scarlett Duncan - who is taking our running techniques, which by the way, you don't have to do any running in if you don't want to. It's half theory and half practical.

This is for all you fitpros who run bootcamps or classes with running components in them, as well as those who are supporting their clients in their first fun runs or ultra-marathons and the rest of us, who also just want to be better runners :-)

Scarlett holds a Bachelor’s degree in Preventative Health Specialising in Exercise and Sport Science. She’s an Athletics Australia qualified coach, Pilates Instructor, Ultra-marathon runner and passionate coach.

Her coaching is evidence informed, and her 10+ years of coaching and competing experience has allowed her to effectively translate and apply this to ‘gen pop’ novice and recreational runners through to sub 3 hour marathon, and ultra-marathon athletes.

Scarlett attributes her effective compassionate coaching approach to her personal challenges, including falling from being a strong competitive athlete to navigating a crippling autoimmune disease diagnosis at age 20. She rebuilt and regained her health to an extent that’s seen her podium in ultra-marathon events, run her successful business and fuel her appetite to continually learn from a broad scope of experts to elevate what it means to be a running coach.

Let's be like lipstick!

Are you feeling a recession oncoming in your personal training business? How is that effecting your fitness business spending?
One of the recent fitness conferences I attended there was a lot of talk of how to recession proof your business. I might be biased as someone with 10 years of university study with a PhD behind me but education is where it is at for increasing earning capacity during a recession. I also would say, become like lipstick. Lipstick has an upward spike in sales proportional to the inverse downturn of spending in other areas! Have a read: and sign up to FICs Educationconference in May or Exercise New Zealand conference in November.

Hypertrophy Training – a 2023 research update.
One of our industries hottest topics.

Back by popular demand with a topic voted on by our attendees, Dr Dan Jolley is doing what he does best, delivering the latest and greatest, most accurate research as it relates to hypertrophy training, and lucky for us, it will be at the FICs 2023 Conference in Perth, in May.

Dr. Dan holds a BSc in exercise science and an MSc in exercise physiology AND he has completed a PhD in educational psychology at Curtin University, looking at the knowledge, and sources of information, of personal trainers.

Dan also worked as a strength and conditioning coach in a number of sports, including cricket (with the Perth Scorchers), and Australian Football (in the semi-professional WAFL competition). He also represented Australia in American Football as both a player and a coach, and was the head of the strength and conditioning program for the men’s national team for the 2011 and 2015 World Championships.

Dan is currently the course coordinator for the Certificate III and IV in Fitness program at South Metro TAFE, where he has taught since 2011 and was recently a national ‘Accredited Exercise Professional of the Year Finalist’.

Dan’s website full of interesting articles specifically for PTs is called Critical Fitness.

And International Men's Day is November 16th 🙂

When we have a fitness business, days like this, apart from bringing awareness to issues, offer a great excuse for us to put good information out to our clients and class members, to create 'Health and Fitness Challenges' around issues that can benefit both our members and a worthy cause, to create fun moments with themed classes, or raise money for a good cause.

In honour of this day I'm sharing three things

A pic of this year's amazing FICs female presenters. There is just so much more to these incredible ladies than these pictures can possible reveal and I know that those of you who can to get FICs and get to listen to them will totally agree.

And I'm also sharing this interview with Dr Martine Rothblatt, who designed the world’s first electric helicopter and piloted it to a Guinness world record for speed, altitude, and flight duration. Her company is dedicated to manufacturing an unlimited supply of transportable organs. In the legal arena, Dr. Rothblatt led efforts of the transgender community to establish their own health law standards and of the International Bar Association to protect autonomy rights in genetic information via an international treaty. It's an easy listen and some wonderful stories in it.

And this link about Heart Attacks in women. Nothing new for us Fitpros in this one just an apt reminder of info worth sharing with clients and members.

March 20: International Day of Happiness
April 1: Run 50 km a day day. Just kidding 😉
April 26th: Get Organised Day
May 13th & 14th: FICs Conference Days

As a personal trainer, why should I attend a conference? 23/02/2023

A good reminder from Dr Suz :-)

As a personal trainer, why should I attend a conference? There are several problems that personal trainers may face that attending a fitness conference could help to solve. Here are some examples: Staying up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques: In the fast-paced world of fitness, it can be challenging for personal trainers to stay on top of the....

But we do love conferences and this conference is organised by the one and only Marietta Mehanni in Melbourne and maybe one day we will be able to get her over here to Perth presenting at FICs but in the meantime you can head along to here Aqua conference.

Marietta has been a wonderful behind the scenes support of FICs and of my own fitness career. She even presented at an aerobics conference I organised with my buddy Aron in Christchurch NZ, many years ago. Marietta and I have since regularly met up at conferences for dinners and laughs, and at those times she has been so incredibly sharing of her knowledge, ideas and fabulous resources. She has also made one of the best pivots I've seen when COVID hit and that alone is reason to have a squizz at her business model at

The Vitruvian Trainer+

Thanks to Wiebke Hnsn or V, the head coach at Vitruvian, we managed to have this machine designed by local guy Jon Gregory, at FICs. Having now had a go on it, I admit to loving this machine and wouldn’t hesitate including it my home training packages for clients and/or 1-1 services.

I also personally loved that it was in the lounge for people to try at lunch time, which reminds me, that lounge was great, next to the massive skylight, allowing everyone to congregate, plenty of fruit during the day, some cheeses and dips to snack on, and obviously so did you as it ended up taking the place of the planned lunch-time forum. Indeed, some of the feedback was around having a longer lunch to make the most of being able to chat to others over lunch. Should we have a lunch time forum next year? I’m not sure, but we will definitely set up the lounge again.

What did people say about Jason Dick's session at FICs last month?

"..very engaging and charismatic funny guy."

"..explained info about the shoulders I wasn't aware of. Well equipped with sticks, rollers and balls"

Well done Jason and thanks heaps for your initial feedback in the very early stages of planning this conference and offering to help fill a gap with this topic.

If you missed Jason's session, which took place in the beautiful Mind Body studio of the Cockburn ARC, then head on over to his website or FB page: Earn The Right.

A few weeks ago we had Tim Barnwell present at the first ever FICs Fitness Industry Conference, in the beautiful Freo Dockers Function room. What did people say about it?

"Tim is a fantastic presenter. Knowledgeable, well-spoken, and inclusive, his presentation exceeded my expectations. His information was relevant, contextualised and interpreted for the audience, and delivered clearly and concisely. I would attend another of his sessions in a heartbeat."

We had so many people that wanted to attend this session and who couldn't get into it, or couldn't be there on the day, that I have asked Tim to present this same session next year on May 12th, 13th at our next conference.

In good news, like virtually all our presenters at FICs, Tim is local, indeed he works out of LifeCare Cockburn ARC so you can catch up with him anytime in the meantime :-)

Thanks so much Tim for saying 'yes' and a fabulous session.

Cockburn ARC go the Dockers :-)

What did attendees say about The Coach, presenter Sean Connolly?

"AWESOME!!!!, What a character! love to spend more time listening to Sean, session too short!!!( I mean that in a nice way!) SO interesting, so much to ask and LOVED the question/discussion time that he managed to squeeze in. BRILLIANT!"

Sean is Head Of High Performance at AAU Australia and the High Performance Manger at East Perth Football Club and was the Strength And Conditioning Coach for the Perth Redbacks as well as a lecturer on personal training courses.

You can get more of local Seán via his Coach Connolly website and Allied Magazine and if you jump into the Attendee Resources portal you'll find a Mind Map from the coach.

Presenter Dr Susan Baxter.

And another attendee said

"A very interesting experience into an unexpected introduction to Body Sculpting posing techniques! Fun! mixed with WOW factor! as to what is involved in the competitive world of Body Sculpting. I felt this was a great area of our fitness world to bring to the Conference. Fascinating! and an eye opener! And Dr Baxter!!! what fun! GREAT to meet you!"

Her session was rated as 'excellent' by our attendees! Need we say more, but we will - Well done Dr Susie, your energy, enthusiasm and knowledge is outstanding. Please come back and do more with us on May 12th and 13th 2023.

In the meantime, those that didn't get there to pick up these notes can find them in the Attendees Resources portal of our website.

"Ben obviously has a deep passion and level of experience with running. His information was relevant, straightforward, and concise. His tips on running were applicable and accessible for everyone".
