On June 29th, beekeepers from Alveole came to install a beehive at Collingwood School. Students were able to see the hive and ask the beekeeper questions via a live video session. We look forward to our students having the opportunity to watch the bees coming and going from the hive and learning more about bees and beekeeping. We are grateful to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this initiative.

The Collingwood Beehive will be installed on Thursday morning. This will be followed by a video presentation of the hive and the beekeeper for all of our students. The hive will be situated in a locked enclosure on the East side of the school. The enclosure has a netting around it so the bees will exit the hive and fly up and away to forage.
Students will have the opportunity to observe the bees coming and going from the hive. Students who are uncomfortable around bees will not need to go near the hive. Students are asked to stay calm and quiet around the hive. We are grateful to the Collingwood Parent Association for their financial support for this exciting project!

⚠️ Update ⚠️ Sports day will continue as planned! While the air quality for Calgary as a whole is poor, the air quality in NW Calgary is listed as a 5. Those students with asthma or other breathing difficulties may need to participate in indoor or less strenuous activities. All volunteers who signed up to help with sports day and fun lunch are asked to come to the school today.
Due to the poor air quality, Sports Day will be cancelled. The Air Quality Index is currently at a 7 and is predicted to improve to a 4 by this evening. We may be able to delay the event by an hour if conditions improve.
Children should come to school prepared to participate in Sports Day in the event it can go ahead as planned. We will send a note to volunteers in the event we can start Sports Day at 9:00.
The free hot dog Fun lunch will happen regardless of the air quality.

Over the next two weeks Sr. Dornan will be doing presentations for students about bees and beekeeping. As part of the presentation he would like to give students a small sample of fresh comb honey to taste.
If you would prefer that your child not taste this fresh honey please let your child’s teacher know.
⚠ Air quality is expected to deteriorate to the high risk category over the course of the day today. ⚠
Poor air quality may mean the postponement or cancellation of outside activities during lunch and recess, as well as outdoor learning and extra-curricular activities such as sports days and field trips. Vigorous indoor activities may also be restricted until conditions improve.
The following measures are currently in place to support the health and safety of students and staff:
▪ All heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that are centrally automated have been adjusted to minimize fresh air exchange until the air quality advisory is lifted;
▪ For schools with HVAC systems that are not centrally controlled, facility operators are manually adjusting the system to minimize fresh air exchange. Please note that CBE facility operators are qualified 5th Class Power Engineers and are well trained in the operation of the school building systems; and
▪ We are closely monitoring CEMA and provincial authorities for any direction and guidance on the air quality situation and will notify schools if the situation requires additional measures.
We know these conditions impact every family differently. If you make the decision that your child will not be attending classes, please ensure you contact your school's attendance line to report the absence.
Updates about air quality are being posted to the CBE website. This page will continue to be updated as the situation evolves. ->https://cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/cbe-schools-air-quality-alerts.aspx
